“Cove Suites - magnificent accommodation, flaky food service”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

The quality of design and build of the Cove Suites is superb – big space, balcony and bathroom.
We could only fault the specification of sunbeds – very basic, not comfortable – no cushions! They are promising to sort this so if you go, there may be comfort.

The resort layout is terrific – lots of pool choice [ not much beach].

There are star performers amongst the staff – drinks service have Wingrove at the Cove Suites pool side bar – a most gracious gentle man. Carolyn is a wild creative who runs the beach pool bar and Nina holds the Pelican bar together.
In the Spa, we both had excellent massages from Fiona.

Those are the good bits.
There seems to be a culture of fear that drives blame and lack of responsibility in food service.
Dinner seemed to be unnecessarily dramatic most nights, taking usually an hour for main courses to arrive.
The cooking of steaks seems to be a random affair, and often we would eat them however cooked rather than wait for ages for it to be as we requested.
We concluded that the service overall does not match the high quality of the accommodation.
We doubt that we would invest so much again to return – having dinner was just too stressful. Needing to speak to a manager every day is not on our list of preferred holiday activities – especially when nothing happened for days to make anything better.

Dear Ed
We were quite surprised that you had so many issues regarding your food quality and service, as throughout your 2 week stay with us, you had only mentioned two occasions where you were dissatisfied and they were each resolved to your then stated satisfaction. We pride ourselves on our very hands-on management style at Blue Waters. Either myself and or my management team do daily touch bases with our guests (as we would have spoken to you as well on a daily basis) to ensure they are enjoying their stay and to follow up on any requests etc. This is one of the signatures of how we run the hotel. Thank you for choosing Blue Waters and for your comments.
Personal Regards,
Andy Howard

We stayed in Blue Waters for 2 weeks in March this year and had a really relaxing stay, so much so that we never actually left the resort despite planning to tour the island.

The initial welcome is well judged with cold drinks whilst you complete the paperwork. The beachfront rooms were perfectly pleasant, and the air conditioning worked well.

The beach area appears small, although in reality we never failed to find a spot as many guest preferred to spend the days by the pools.

We used the spa for a couples massage early in our stay and it was just what we needed to help us relax totally, well worth the money.

Breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice and it always seemed fresh, lunch buffets were generally good but it would have been useful to have known about the option to order off the menu instead sometimes. We only found this out after commenting about a lack of choice one day. For dinner we found the Palm a little disappointing, however Bartleys is better and The Cove is excellent. It was just a shame that The Cove isn't open every night.

To echo the comments of another reviewer, Vincent the food and beverage manager is truly excellent and very friendly. He addressed any concerns very quickly and would always come to see how we were and have a talk. I would say that he was the standout member of a very good team.

The only other negative comment I'd make is that the steel band which plays on a Sunday lunchtime and afternoon are loud and can become a little tiresome if you are trying to relax on the terrace / balcony outside your room to escape the afternoon sun. This isn't meant to take away from their talent however, they are very good and listening to them play "The Green Green Grass of Home" whilst Wales beat England in the Rugby Six Nations Championship is a very fond memory!

Would be stay again? Probably, but only if The Cove restaurant was to be open every night.

Came to Blue Waters with my family for my brother's wedding. My mom has very bad knees and a has hard time getting around. Everyone was so nice and so accommodating. They went out of their way to help her. We especially appreciated Akeem's help - he always picked us up in his golf cart with a warm greeting and an infectious smile. We stayed at Cove Suites and our concierge, Corey was such a help. The room next to our room clearly had someone smoking in it and it was smelling up our room. The staff went above and beyond to apologize and fix the situation. I would highly recommend this wonderul resort. I would go back without a doubt. Even my father, who HATES to travel loved this place...he even agreed to come back again (and that is VERY high praise).

Wade and Kate - Stayed from 29/06/13 - 06/07/13

Blue Waters Hotel is an amazing place to go on holiday. When we arrived in reception we were led to the seated area in reception and greeted with a refreshing rum punch. We were led by Mark to a buggy and transported to our rooms with our cases taken care of also. The hotel is set in a cove with a beach at either side with stunning views over the sea. The gardens are well kept with bougainvillea and palm trees. We were in a hillside superior room which overlooked the sea, with his and hers wardrobes, mini bar, flat screen telly, robes, slippers, hairdryer, elemis toiletries and also an ironing board. The room was clean and the bathroom adequate. It had a balcony with sun beds and a table.

We were five minutes walk from the pools, sea and the Palm restaurant where we eat breakfast. There are three restaurants to choose from:- The Palm which is where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served, which has open views of the sea and pool. Bartley’s which is in an air-conditioned room with bar and colonial style windows and the Cove which is in the spa area overlooking the sea which is extra special and romantic. The Palm is open every day, Bartley’s was open at the beginning of the week and the Cove at end of the week. We had to book with Nian in reception the day before which was absolutely fine. The food was absolutely outstanding and the service was excellent. The beef tenderloin was my absolute favourite in a red wine sauce and my husband’s was the grilled lobster with garlic butter. Must mention that in the afternoon tea, coffee and cakes with sandwiches were served on the veranda outside the Palm restaurant, delicious!

There was entertainment every other night with a lady singer who was very talented, a steel band and more. You could get up and dance or just sit and enjoy the cocktails, zambuca or anything that took your fancy. Around the pool on the comfy beds there was no rush to get sunloungers they were plentiful and not overcrowded. There are bars in the pool areas, and we sat on the decking between the two bays. As you relaxed in the sun Carolynn would walk around collecting drink orders in her happy manner, such a lovely lady always friendly and could not do enough for you. We had mango sorbets, fruit and icy cold flannels bought to us as we soaked up the sun.

The hotel has lovely grounds to walk around a tennis court, gym, games room and spa. There is a large television in the lobby bar which we gathered at to watch Murray win the quarter finals, it was a great atmosphere.

We opted for the inclusive package almost everything was included apart from the bottled Evian water and the speciality wine list. I had the house wine (Sauvignon Blanc) which I thoroughly enjoyed and my husband enjoyed there beer. In the Cove you received a 50$ credit per person towards your meal, which was excellent and did not leave much to pay on top. The food was of such a high standard I couldn’t believe we got the credit on the second evening we went there I would have happily paid for quality.

The best aspect of this hotel is the warm and friendly people who make you feel very welcome and would do anything to make sure that you are happy. We met a group of (Scottish) people Lynne, Gordon, Kath and Donald who were very friendly here, this also added to our enjoyment. We will definitely go back you just try and stop us.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms have excellent view.

Quite simply, we loved it. The staff made our stay one of the most enjoyable holidays we have ever had and they did so not by being cringingly servile but by engaging with us and being genuinely warm, friendly and amusing. I miss my nights at the bar joking with Pearl, Tario, Lueella and Raoul and my afternoons talking to Curtis about Reggae and listening to Carolyn sing her Gospel music. Tario, buddy, you are a bright young man. You'll go far if you don't have any more picknies! There are some other folks worthy of mention and then I'll get on with the review: Nian, Wingrove, Chaz, Paulette, Joe, Angie, Jean and others whose names I have forgotten (sorry). Thank you all for making it special.
OK. The room? Clean, comfortable but definitely in need of modernising I gather there are plans to do so in the near future).
Amenities? Pretty much what you'd expect from a 5 star resort: 3 restaurants, 2 pool bars, 3 pools, a spa, a shop. Nian at the excursion desk makes it easy for you to get around the island and we took full advantage. I recommend the helicopter trip over the volcano zone on Monserrat, the Segway experience and the Zip line but if these don't appeal they will arrange for you to cuddle stingrays, see the frigate bird colony or just get on a boat, enjoy the beautiful Caribbean sea and drink some local grog (it's good too - Cavalier rum).
Extras? The mini bar is stocked with everything you could want and it's free. You drink it, they replace it. No charge at the end of your stay.
For those who might think us ingenuous: the island's economy depends on tourism and yes, of course, they want to encourage it. But there is a generosity of spirit on the island that has nothing to do with this. We were walking in St John's one day when a woman with her little girl stopped us and asked how we were enjoying the island. She did NOT ask for money and she clearly did not expect it. We got into conversation with many Antiguans during our stay. None were rude to us. All were generous with their time and were helpful or entertaining.
We did encounter some Rasta guys selling aloe vera - for which we had no use - but come on, this is island tax. It's worth a few dollars here and there to be in such a beautiful place.
So, go on. Stop listening to me prattleon and book it.You'll love it. Bluewaters is welcoming and offers a lot more for your money than some of the more exclusive hotels on the island.
Would we go back? If we ever get the money together again we'll be on the next plane out.
Pearl, Hon: hope you're reading this and everything's OK with you. Take care. x
