“We'll be back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

This was our first time in Antigua, and we were enchanted with the island and with Blue Waters in particular. We can well believe the experienced Antigua visitors who told us this was the best place to stay on the island. The ambience and gardens are delightful, and, crucially, the hotel has good, friendly staff with a great attitude. They seem to take genuine pleasure in giving visitors happy memories.

One example: the day after a conversation with a waitress about herbal teas, she brought us fresh lemon grass to try, cut from her own garden. Very different to Barbados, our last Caribbean holiday, where felt like dollars on the hoof.

Food & drink: The 'all inclusive' package is good if you don't mind drinking house wine (acceptable, Chilean). Palms restaurant is optimised for buffet meals; great breakfasts and lunches, but we preferred the a la carte Cove Restaurant in the evenings. The $50 allowance for all inclusive guests stretches to 2 good courses. Lobster at the Cove is $38. Book early.

The beaches are sandy and private, so you aren't hassled by vendors. The Water Sports crew (Owen, Robert, Ryan) are great characters who enjoy their jobs. On request, they'll take you out in a Hobie Cat to a reef about 1200 yards offshore, where you can snorkel over coral.

Excursion tips:

It seems that hiring a car is a bad idea. We didn't, but heard the tales of those who did. The roads are heavily pot-holed, resulting in some 'creative' driving, and are almost devoid of signs. For the cost of a day's car hire, a taxi took us to the other end of the island and brought us back 3 hours later. Ask the excursions desk for Lewis as driver, and let him take a scenic route. For us, being offered fresh coconut and pineapple at the roadside by one of Lewis's friends was a more enduring memory than the historic attractions of English Harbour.

Great Bird Island is worth a visit. Excellent coral, clear water, and a stunning display of fish for snorkelers . It was also quiet when we were there, and there's something romantic about strolling along a tropical beach where the only footprints are your own. Hotel hospitality (Sandy) will organise the trip and arrange a lunchtime BBQ, but it's probably best to find 2 or 3 like-minded couples to share the cost unless, like us, you are celebrating a significant birthday/anniversary.

Beware excursion on days when cruise ships are in port; attractions will be swamped.

Shirley Heights on a Sunday night (45 mins by taxi) offers stunning views of the sunset and great steel bands. We're told the evening livens up after dark and it's worth sampling the BBQ and reggae there rather than hurrying back to the hotel's dinner.

Overall, although there's still scope for improvement (Bartley's Restaurant, for example, seemed slow and disorganised), we've rarely finished a holiday so unwilling to leave or so determined to go back.

Room Tip: We had a 'Superior Hillside' which was acceptable, but when we go back we'll find the ex...

I spent 4 days in January at The Blue Waters Hotel and it was wonderful. The attention to detail was great. The front desk staff treat you like family and always called you by name. The grounds, the room and the cleaning staff were all great in particular Jean. The food was very good and the presentation was great. My second day in Antigua was spent in the Spa....I've had alot of Spa treatments and this was the best to date.Michelle and Fiona you are both great practisioners and gave me a very memorable experience. Thank you! I enjoyed myself so much I have already booked my summer trip.

Room Tip: My room faced the beach and it was great listening to the sound of the waves.

The resort isn't a mega-sized affair so it's got a lovely laid back feel to it. The staff is fantastic and everyone across the resort always had a cheery hello. They have a lovely get to know the staff evening which was very nice.
The room was comfy without losing the feel of simplicity. The only bit that didn't get a 10/10 for me were the buffet meals. The pre-set menu meals at the restaurants were fantastic but the buffet spread was just about average.
For those afraid of creepy crawlies, there are mosquitoes out of the rooms and in the rooms, and outside , given the greenery expectedly lots and lots of garden lizards. All considered I don't think we could have chosen better.

High class hotel in a wonderfully secluded location. Good accommodation and good food, with the choice of 3 restaurants.
Staff were very helpful from the off and this continued throughout the holiday.

Room Tip: Go for a beachfront room, near watersports - plenty of interest from the roomy terrace. Remember t...

We have just returned from 10 glorious nights in Blue Waters, where we got married on 22nd January. We have stayed in many luxurious hotels throughout the world but I can honestly say that Blue Waters has something special and I truly believe that we could not have found a better place for our special day.
From the minute we arrived at the hotel we experienced a feeling of warmth and this continued throughout our stay. The resort itself is elegant, clean and spacious and the food is lovely. The staff were wonderful, service was always delivered with a smile and nothing was too much trouble, everybody genuinely wanted to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Whilst I could mention names of individual staff members, I am reluctant to do so, as so many played an important part in making our stay so special.
What I must mention however is our wedding, as I wouldn't want anybody reading this review to miss an opportunity! If you are looking for the perfect venue, then look no further, Blue Waters is the place! Mandie and Tamara were just brilliant. The only decision that we had to make was the colour of the flowers and what music we wanted on the dvd, everything else was taken care of. The venue, which was the gazebo, was stunning and the photographs look amazing. It was a very special day and one which we will never forget. Thank you Mr Howard for lending Dean your cufflinks!
Thank you everybody at Blue Waters for making our wedding and our honeymoon so special. We will be back to celebtate our first anniversary with you next January.

Room Tip: The Cove Suites are absolutely beautiful, pure luxury if the budget will stretch that far....

We have stayed at many hotels over the years but this is one of the best. The food was delicious, the service and staff were so helpful, the accommodation was spacious, the weather perfect and the hotel tours were magic. We could not recommend this hotel too highly - it was the best 14 days ever!
