“One of the best vacations we've had!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2009

Beautiful spot, excellent service, great food, best beach. All in all one of the best vacations we've had and will definitely go back. Only one concern (not complaint) was our room. They are currently renovating the Carribean Grove however had not got to the block we were in. We were told it was a 'luxury' room but fell a bit short of that. It was clean and the location was excellent but definitely needed some upgrading. Sandals is noted for luxury and that's what we expected. The resort overall is beautiful and very well kept.

My wife and I have traveled to many all inclusives in the Caribbean and Mexico, and after reading the reviews on this site, I was a bit hesitant about Sandals Grande Antigua as I had booked it as a surprise for my wife. We were there from November 5 - 12, 2009, and all I can say is don't believe the negative reviews.

We booked a penthouse honeymoon suite in the Mediterranean Village, and the room was absolutely beautiful. The sunsets from our balcony were breathtaking. We were on this trip celebrating our 25th anniversary, and really were not looking to do much but enjoy the beach, warm weather, and reconnect while celebrating our anniversary. The room came with butler service, and while we had never had butlers before, I highly recommend it. They will take care of all of your reservations, special requests for flowers in the room, snacks on the beach, a cooler with your favorite drinks, etc... You simply have to ask them for what you want. Without a butler, getting shade on the beach is nearly impossible unless you want to wake up a 5:00 a.m. to go claim your spot. I would highly recommend the team of Cecil and Wendall if you go the butler route. They were fantastic. Yes, you do have to tip them, but trust me, you will want to. They really enhance your stay and they give you a cell phone so you can contact them whenever you want.

The rooms on the Caribbean Village side are a bit more charming, but we prefer new, and were glad we chose the Mediterranean Village.

The beach is beautiful, and while there are vendors, a polite no thank you and they will leave you alone. If you are looking for lots of activities, they have a playmaker staff that will keep you busy. We chose to chill out and enjoy the beach, but lots of people we spoke with had fun with the various events that are held daily.

As for restaurants, there are many to choose from. All I can say is if you want five star restaurants, you will probably be disappointed, but you won't need to wear a suit and tie every night either. That said, I am very well travelled, and I can say without hesitation, that overall our meals were very good. In fact, the menus were quite nice, with selections that provided something for nearly everyone's palate. I highly recommend going to Kimono's, and if you do, try to get Sugar for your chef. He was hilarious, entertaining, and a good cook. Also, the pizza at Mario's is really good. They will do a very nice thin and crispy crust if you ask them. Yes, it does take a little while, but we never waited more than 30 minutes. Even then, relax, enjoy a cold beverage, and remember, you are on vacation.

This was our first trip to a Sandals property, but we would definitely go back. It was the most romantic and relaxing vacation we have ever taken. The Red Lane Spa is also very impressive. I highly recommend the couples massage, and will warn you that when it is finished, you will not be ready for it to be over.

We found the staff at all times polite, helpful, and very fun. They do respond more favorably, however, if you treat them the same. If you choose to go here, and go with the idea that you are going to have a good time, I am very confident you will.

We found that we were not ready to come home after a week, and that is unusual for us. While the resort was totally sold out during our stay, we never felt that it was crowded. We never had excessive waits at restaurants, bars, elevators, or anything. Maybe because it is so beautiful and we were there to relax, that nothing really bothered us. Although my wife would tell you I am normally short tempered.

I would encourage you to visit this resort without hesitation, and to those who give it negative reviews, I wonder if any resort anywhere could satisfy them. Stop reading, go to Antigua, and have fun!!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2009

My husband an I (in our late 20s) stayed here from Nov. 7th to 14th. This was our second stay at a Sandals (the first was at thw Sandals Grande St. Lucian - I'll compare them later). Arrival was great and fast, with a friendly greeting at the front of Sandals with champagne. We were pleased to find out we were given a room updrade as returning guests. We booked a basic room (Garden of Eden Premium or something like that) and were upgraded to a Honeymoon Luxury Concierge room. It was poolside, larger, had a full bar and Concierge service which was great because you could call for reservations instead of going to the Concierge office. We were on the Caribbean side which was gorgeous with all the lush gardens surrounding us, but the rooms aren't as nice as the Med. side. Our room was nice though and we definitely have no complaints especially with the room upgrade!

The property is large and beautiful. The gardens are immaculate and the beach is very nice. The sunsets on Dickenson Bay are gorgeous too. On our "lazy" days, we usually spent half the day at the beach and half the day the the Med. pool. The med side pool is huge and the swim-up bar is fun as always and a great place to meet people. We found it really easy to meet other couples at this resort and there was a good mix of all ages. Had some good times at the swim-up bar and in the evenings with people we met! It's true about the towels on the chairs - it's hard to find chairs but as long as there were no personal belongings on chairs with towels, we'd just take them off and move right in. Don't feel bad about doing that because honestly, we saw lots of people leave the pool and just leave their towels on the chairs. You can also keep an eye on some towels and if no one comes back in while, just take them. We never had a problem finding something in the afternoon. The med. pool is quite lively, but there are 4 other pools scattered about and some are very quiet if that's what you're looking for.

Restaurants/bars - overall we really enjoyed the food here and there was a wide variety of choices. We weren't able to get reservations to Eleanor's which was a bit annoying (it's really small and I'm sure there's no way they can get everyone in there each week), but we ate everywhere else except the OK Corral. Our favourite was Mario's - the antipasti buffet there is SO delicious, you could fill up on that alone but then you've still got 3 courses left! Barefoot by the Sea was very good - lots of seafood choices - we both had lobster and it was good. The lobster thermidor was better than the grilled lobster though. We also really enjoyed Kimono's and our cook was wonderful! Kimono's is a great place to meet people so try to go there near the start of your stay. We also filled ourselves silly at the sushi bar one night, which was actually really good. The salmon was different than at home (we're from Western Canada) but it still tasted really good. We had a bit of everything - rolls, nigiri and sashimi and it was all good! The food at the Cricketer's Pub was just OK - i'd say avoid it for meals but it's good for a late night snack when you've had too much to drink! As for nightlife - we usually started out at the lobby bar which has stuff going on each night (the live music is usually pretty good, but then they usually have some sort of game that can be fun or lame) and then if we wanted to stay out later, we'd head to the Cricketer's Pub, which was hit and miss as far as how busy it was. There was a DJ there on certain nights though if you're interested in dancing. There's also the piano bar which was fun to try for a night. Most of the cocktails here are extremely sweet so I mostly stuck to champagne (which was good), wine (pretty decent) and highballs. If you're looking for sweet slushy drinks, try the BBC or a Mudslide. As for the service - well, sometimes it was great and sometimes it wasn't. Usually you were treated quite good in the restaurants, but the service at the breakfast and lunch buffets was just OK. Usually we'd wait a while for water and coffee in the morning. Some staff are so friendly - most say "hi" and smile when they walk by and some go out of their way to help. But a few aren't the friendliest or fastest (especially at the lobby bar!). Niels was the best bartender - hopefully he's still there when you go! We are pretty laid back though so didn't care too much about the few servers/bartenders who weren't great.

Activities - we played sand volleyball and pool volleyball which was fun, and we did a snorkelling trip one day. The snorkelling was pretty decent - we saw all sorts of different fish. We are divers but sadly did not go diving...mainly because we were told we had to take an orientation session in the pool and then the dive boat goes out at 6:45 a.m....so that's just a little to early for us! We have been diving in various parts of the world and were told the diving wasn't amazing in Antigua, so we weren't really upset to miss out. The people we met who went though said it was pretty good (i think they saw rays and maybe eels, but nothing else "big"). I better mention though that if you haven't dived in the past year, they make you do an open book PADI test (they give you a textbook!) and then you have to pay $70 for a refresher course! Saw one guy who was not impressed with this. It's funny, because at Sandals Grande St. Lucian you can just simply go diving as long as you're certified. There are also all sorts of other activities and contests at this resort too - you won't get bored!

We left the resort a couple times - once to go shopping in St. John's one morning when it was raining which was OK, but there wasn't anything that exciting to buy and some of it was the same price as at home. The stuff in the market was fairly junky too, so unless you are really set on buying something specific, i wouldn't bother going there to shop. And i don't think there's much else to do there so i'd give it a miss altogether. Oh, and I'd stay away from the casinos in St. John's....I'm pretty sure we were quite close to getting scammed. Another day we met up with family who have a place in English harbour which was really nice. The drove us around the island which was cool to see (beautiful coastal scenery!), through the rainforest, and we hung out at the beach at English harbour and had lunch there. We drove past Nelson's dockyard but it didn't seem too exciting so we didn't bother exploring there.

I want to compare this resort with Sandals Grande Antigua because we met various people who were trying to decide which of the two to go to. The easy answer is that they are very similar, but there are some differences that might help you make your decision if you're pondering which one to go to. If we had to pick one to go back to, we'd pick the Grande St. Lucian (but note that the other 2 in St. Lucia are NOT as good as either the Grand St. Lucian or the Grande Antiguan - we visited both), although Antigua was a very close second. All the rooms at the St. Lucian are very modern (we had the lowest level room in St. Lucia and it was nicer than our upgraded room in the Caribbean Village in Antigua - i'm sure the med side rooms are as nice as St. Lucia though). We found the St. Lucian overall to feel a bit more upscale than the Antiguan, simply because the Caribbean side at Antigua is starting to look slightly outdated. The restaurants were very comparable at the two, but i'd say the service was a bit better in St. Lucia. Antigua did have better nightlife though! The St. Lucian has a lobby bar and nightclub, but we found them to not be as busy and lively as the bars in Antigua. The diving process is much more simplified in St. Lucia and the diving is quite good there. We did three dives and were happy with our experience. Saw lots of fish, some lobsters, a turtle, etc. and got to see the Pitons (mountains) from the dive boat. And the good thing is that the dive boat doesn't go out so early (i think it went out at 9 a.m. - a much better time for us!). The beaches were about the same as far as their beauty - Dickenson Bay is longer and has better sunsets, but the downside there is that people are constantly trying to get you to buy things and book tours. The beach at the St. Lucian is quieter with way less people bothering you. As for the two islands - they are both beautiful but St. Lucia is more lush and mountainous. We found it easier to meet people at the Antiguan and it was bit livelier there. Other than that they were very similar. I hope that helps with your decision!

We really enjoyed our time at the Sandals Grande Antigua. If you're going there expecting it to be perfect, don't. It's wonderful and there are so many good things about it, but you may occasionally get a meal or drink you don't like, or experience a grumpy staff member. Just relax and have fun though - it's a great place to stay with tons of fun things to do, yummy food to eat, drinks galore, a gorgeous beach, nice rooms, great pools and sunny days - which is all you really need for a great vacation!

My husband and I enjoyed our first trip to Antigua, tremendously. Our choice to stay at Sandals, once again, proved to be a good decision. We stayed in a Rondoaval Room right on the ocean. We had butler service, which only enhanced things. He made all of our reservations, thereby eliminating the stress of waiting to get in the restaurants. We enjoyed all of our dining experiences and the waiters and waitresses.

Kimonos was great experience. Our friends, who joined us on our vacation, had never experienced a Japenese Steakhouse dining and were truly entertained. Eleanor's was the restaurant that we celebrated our friend's 50th birthday. Sonya, Director of Guest Services, made it so special by having flower petals on the table and a b-day cake for him. What a wonderful touch of personalization. The Barefoot restaurant was great for both lunch and dinner. Our group of 6, enjoyed the Piano Bar, which is air-conditioned, each night before retiring.

We all stayed by the Caribbean Pool each day. La Toya was a great bartender and fun! The Playmakers played pool volleyball and enteracted with all the guests. We did not make it to any other pool because we enjoyed this one so much.

In summation, the resort was a wonderful experience for us. The General Manager, Gerald Christ and Sonya Herzberg, Director of Guest Services were both great in making sure every detail is attended to.

Arrived at this hotel as a part of a party of 10. Six of the party were upgraded to the Med side which was far better than the Caribbean side accomadation wise. We were assured at checkin that the remainder of our party would be moved over within 36 hours - sadly dispite numerous visits to reception this never happened and worsely nobody ever got back to me as promised!
Room service was none existent and if you requested anything it took hours to arrive. Housekeeping were very good for the first 3 days but after that there was no turndown service etc.
Eating out was ok if you managed to book into Eleanor's - which was very good both foodwise and service. The other good experience was Kimono's where Frank cooked your food infront of you on a hotplate - delicious! In the other restaurants if you expect fine dining don't book to go to Sandals.
Pool area was fantastic, as was the beach. Overall most of the staff were really friendly and couldn't do enough for you.
We all had a fantastic holiday despite some disappointments I wouldn't expect from a 5 star establishment!

Visited resort from November 6 through 13. Pleased to be upgraded from a Venetian Suite to a Monte Carlo suite, which I believe are the same, except the MC was on a higher floor which gives a better view of large pool and bay. Samantha The room was beautiful, but somewhat cramped due to the size of the furniture. Housekeeping was excellent, although evening turndown was missed four out of seven nights. Beverages were refilled daily. The rain shower is fantastic. Definitely recommend spending the extra dollars to stay in the Mediteranean (new) vs. the Caribbean (original). While the grounds of the Caribbean are definitely tropical, there are many more geckos on the Caribbean side, which didn't bother me, but the large cockroach on the ceiling of the very small internet cafe did.

We have been to Sandals Whitehouse, Sandals Grande in St. Lucia and Beaches Turks and Caicos. In my mind, the food in Antigua was good, not great. Breakfast was good every morning, especially the omelet station, but very little variety, especially potatoes. We had Lyonnaise potatoes the first three days. Lobster tails were inconsistent. "Medium" steaks came out very well done, charred to be exact. Eleanor's did not live up to its expectations. We ate at Mario's twice. The antipasta bar is outstanding. The Tiramisu is very good. Kimona's was very disappointing versus other hibachi restaurants in the resorts named above...no excitement from the cook due to limited space. The food at Barefoot was good. We had lunch there most days. The pizza is very good at the pizza place located next to Mario's. They really hype up the Caribbean Beach Party on Monday night. Due to questionable weather, the buffet was inside and it was a disaster. It took over 15 minutes to go through the line. By the time we got through, there were no ribs and non in sight in the way. The girl carving the ham was down to the bone, again with no more ham on its way. We gave up and went to Mario's.

Another area that I was disappointed was the lack of a sense of urgency in the dining areas. Most of the service staff were very nice and In defense of the people working there, they seemed to be understaffed. Barefoot was a prime example. Reservations are not taken, so we got there at 8pm for dinner. They told us they could seat us at 9pm. We got seated at 9:45. They blamed it on a large wedding party that stayed longer than expected.

Unlike other Caribbean bartenders, the bartenders are hard to get to know. It is difficult to get their attention, especially around the pool bar. Nils was a nice guy and Gavin was a lot of fun. I'm a vodka guy and the best vodkas were Absolute and Stoly. Other Sandals have stocked Grey Goose. My friend was happy that they had Jack Daniels.

If you want to take a tour of the island, ask for Bill or Rowland Anthony. Both are really good guys. Definitely go to Shirley Heights, Nelson's Dockyard and Devil's Bridge. My friend's wife and I did the zipline, very safe.

The beach is not that nice. The water was not the typical crystal clear that you can see your feet. The main pool is fantastic, just the right size, with plenty of chairs (you do have to get out there early, 7am, to get a pool-side chaise) and floaties.

If you're still reading, I suspect that you think I was negative in my review. If you want to go to Antigua without the kids, I would recommend Sandals. I just feel that with the prices that Sandals charges, 95% or more of everything you experience should be outstanding and I can't say that about this Sandals. I feel that Secrets Capri on the Riviera Maya in Mexico is superior to any Sandals that I have stayed at. I also feel that your money goes a lot further at the Iberostar Grande and the Riu Palace resorts. If I do return to Antigua, I was told that the Verandah resort is very nice.

A lot of reviews have mentioned Sonya, the Director of Guest Relations. She is a very classy lady who really does a great job in meeting with the guests. I did discuss some of my concerns with her. She was very nice and sent a beautiful fruit tray with an apology note to our room. I would definitely recommend asking to see her if you have any concerns. I don't want to forget Samantha at the concierge desk. She was always very friendly and very helpful.
