Halcyon Cove by Rex Resorts
Ranked #6 of 16 Hotels in St. John's
Reviewed December 26, 2006

Stayed Dec 9-13,2006 . Room only. Rooms are dated, great AC, great pool, lots of beach chairs on beach . Hotel is on end of beach so you miss all of the cruise ship daytimers. Food left a lot to be desired so ate most meals at coconut grove resteraunt at other end of beach , which has great food and service. Bottomless cup of coffee. It was a bit expensive for the quality of resort it could be.
TV channels did not exist but you go there for the beach.

My boyfriend & I stayed at Rex during the 1st week in December. The hotel itself is a bit 'tired' looking and could do with a refurb however our room (Superior) was really spacious with a huge comfy bed and the cleaners kept it spotless. The bathroom was in desperate need of a makeover however again - it was clean and that's the most important thing!

The hotel could not be in a better location. We did a circumnavigation of the island with Wadadli Cats (defo recommend this!) and this gave us the opportunity to see beaches and hotels the whole way round the island. Although Rex may be a bit dated and not luxurious like Cocobay, etc in our opinion it is on the best beach!

There are a couple of beach bar shacks right next to the hotel - perfect for an afternoon beer or pina colada. A short stroll to the end of the beach brings you to 'The Beach' and 'Coconut Grove'. We ate numerous times in both as room only. The food, service and setting were perfect (for breakfast, lunch and dinner).. The Beach also gets lively later on (esp Friday as this is their main party night)..

Walk up the hill out of the entrance and you come to a very oddly decorated pizza restaurant.. the pizzas here were delicious.. carry on further up the same hill and take a right to 'Tradewinds Hotel'.. there is a fantastic restaurant here called 'The Bay House'.. the most delicious food and a really nice looking boutique hotel.. The have happy hour here for cocktails 5-7pm so worth heading up there for cocktails to watch the sun go down & then have dinner. Beautiful setting up on the hill overlooking Dickenson Bay..

We went to St Johns a few times during our stay (there's a good coffee shop for lattes on Redcliff Quay).. Cafe Napoleon is also nice for bfast..

As well as being in a perfect setting, the Antiguan people are what made our holiday. They are friendly, funny, warm, cheeky and welcoming. It's a bit weird at first after arriving from UK and everyone being soooooo friendly (with no alterior motive)! Then you find it sad when you come home and everyone is miserable!

So, in a nutshell, although the hotel is dated, I would recommend due to location and service. I'd also recommend going for Room Only board as this encourages you to get out there and get a real taste of the Caribbean (other wise there is no point in being there???)

We stayed at the Rex Halcyon from the 18/11/06 until the 29/11/06 and we both were happy with the hotel. We booked room only but had breakfast at the hotel every day and it was very good. We are both vegetarians and did not have any trouble with the food which we did in a previous visit to St Lucia.
We mainly ate at Mamma Lolly's vegetarian in St Johns, Coconut Grove, Pari's Pizza and The Beach.
We went on the wadadli catamaran circumnavigation tour and if you don't like rough seas think about it because the atlantic coast was pretty rough the day we went. Went on the classic tour of the island to Betty's Hope, Nelson's Dockyard, Devil's Bridge etc and also went to Shirley Heights on the Sunday.
All in all had a fabulous holiday in Antigua and would love to go back. Had a couple of drinks in Sneaky Pete's each evening as the sun went down and it was lovely. The bar maid in there is very friendly. There is a lot of building works going on at the back of where our room was but it didn't bother us too much but I think it did some people. Most negative comments have been about the rooms. They were better than we expected but a good tip would be for the cleaners when they go in shut the door so the bugs don't get in. There were alot of mosquitoes there during our visit and lots of the visitors were badly bitten.
Anyway would recommend the Rex it's not bad and you get what you pay for!

Have today returned from a fantastic holiday staying at rex halycon cove, Dickenson bay, we had a great time, i highly recommend the cocktails from the caribar and of course the Rum punch, please look out for Heather & Marissia as they are 2 of the best barmaids ever.Make sure you take plenty of insect repellent with you as the mozzies are very hungry at the moment.
The wadaddli cat trip was excellent, we went on the circum navigation which took us through some great Atlantic waves(so girls no hair straightening on that day) Look out for coconut Joe on the beach, he,s a real nice guy who will crack open a coconut add a bit of rum & fresh sugar cane for about 5 us dollars. Also the shell man (the tall guy i found had the nicer shells)The beaches are beautiful with lovely warm sea, a few vendors who like to chat, they are lovely people and a polite no thankyou and they are cool.
Hotel very nice, no problems in the 2wks we stayed, food very nice, room comfotable,so all in all a lovely holiday.
oh yes, the jeep trip canoeing down the mangroves is a great day out too so hope enjoy the trip

I booked this hotel 2 weeks before I left. I just needed to get away from New York and the real world for a few days ( 5 to be exact!). I got this hotel for 83$ U.S. per night and while its a great price I thought I was going to "get what I paid for". NO WAY! the service was FANtastic. everyone had a smile, said hello and offered help. the rooms are avg. nothing to complain about, how much time are you really spending in there anyway! no clock in the room, loved that!!I a/c was fine. i had a pool side, ground floor room. this hotel is in a great location in a cove (hence the name), which means no wind. perfect beach w/lots of those thatched tiki huts(no extra costs to use). I noticed, no other hotels had them on the beach. other people from other hotels tried to come over and use them, rent them but security was right on them. as other reviewers said, there are people trying to sell you stuff on the beach, but as soon as you say no thank you, they reply w/a thank you and move on...not pushy at all! some stray dogs running around on the beach (actually the whole island) but also totally harmless. the food is buffet style at the hotel, but not bad. there are a couple of beach bar+grille's right down the beach. prices of drinks and food are reasonable, but then again being from NY my ideas of reasonable may vary. oh, I got a massage at "wandas" at the hotel, I think she may actually come to your room upon request. the massage parlor is just a 1 room 1 bed parlor, but it worked (55$ U.S. for an hour)!! there always was some kind of entertainment (calypso or steel drum band) at night. the internet (1 kiosk) wasn't the fastest.

I didn't do any shore excursions, as I had just sprained my ankle and was afraid of really messing it up, so I cant help w/any of that. the island seems pretty much 3rd world of what I saw.

I deff. recommend this hotel...the service, the water, the sand...PERFECT.... DO IT!

Fantastic resort, the best area on the Island. All the others are on their own and very isolated. Dickenson Bay has at least 4 different hotels etc. We booked RO but upgraded to AI for 5 days when we were there. So we sampled the fantastic food in the Hotel the first week and then having got our bearings ventured out to the other restraunts in the area. Don't miss Coconut Grove at the other end of the beach for breakfast and fantastic evening meals and location. "The Beach" is also very good as is the Steak and Pizza place out of the front gates and 400m up the hill. The staff were very friendly esp. Heather, Kelvin and our cleaner who came every day, always ready with a smile. Fantastic snorkling on the reef a couple of miles out, get there by boat from the watersports place. Great beach cricket each week with Hyacinth. Crazy golf at a bar behind "The Beach" restraunt. Couple of beach bars between Halcyon Cove and Sandles where can watch Premiership football. Great thunderstorms and waterspouts out at sea. We especially enjoyed our last night when we ran the beach bar at the hotel for 2 hours, becasue it was raining and the staff "disappeared". Those of you who were there will remember the "topless barmaid competition! (only a one off event!).
Would throughly recommend. We booked Std Room but got given a Pool Side upgrade without even asking.
If you went and didn't enjoy it then you only have yourselves to blame, ask the staff and they will move you, sort out your problems always with a smile, if you talk to them niceley. Some people are just abusive and deserve all they get!
Would love to go back.
