Halcyon Cove by Rex Resorts

As everyone says this is a dated resort but they are working on it. We stayed Feb.2-9 in a garden view room(609)on the 3rd floor that was clean & comfortable with a very limited view of the ocean. We did not have a frig or coffee machine but apparently they are available on request. I would suggest upgrading to pool view at least if view is a priority. Some we met had room problems & notified management and they tried to make things right. No face clothes so take your own. Most staff were very good, especially Orlando at the lobby bar & Lisa at the omelette station & Lisa who was great with our room. Beach is very good & we'll maintained. Food was very good with enough variety to satisfy most everyone. The resort is trying to go smoke free which we were not made aware of so there are only 2 ashtrays available on the grounds & none for the balcony so we used cops with water. Warri Pier is enjoyable with romantic atmosphere.
Would recommend an SUV day trip with Gary of Voyages Antigua($100 each,6 hours inc. lunch, drinks & lots of info & great sites) through Transit Rep.
You will very much enjoy this resort if you keep in mind that it is reasonably priced & the positives greatly out weigh the negatives.
Thanks to all.

We have just returned from a lovely 2 weeks in the paradise of Antigua. this is the third year running at the Halcyon Cove and we are welcomed back as family members! I am amazed by those reviewers who waste their energy and hard earned holiday nitpicking and criticising - just relax - you're in the Caribbean!!
Location - perfect - at the end of a lovely beach - right next door to Sandals. The sea goes in cycles so yes there are a few stones washed up, and there are days when piles of seaweed come ashore but there is a team of people forever tidying and raking and removing excess greenery. The sea is beautiful to swim in - there is a designated swimming area. Great for cooling off when the temperature soars! As it is the end of the beach then there is no 'through traffic' and only people with business there are about.
There are quite a few static umbrellas and enough beds for everyone who wants one. If you want shade then 7am is the time to put your towel out as Im sure some people just dont sleep!! But the sun is up early so why stay in bed? Theres also plenty of space around the pool. A lot of beds need re- stringing but im sure that will be on the agenda!
Pool/beach towels are provided and can be changed daily as you wish.
Beach vendors are respectful and say hello every day - a polite no sends them on their way no problems - but some of their stuff is actually quite nice! Kevin the aloe vera man is a laugh and michael ducking and diving greeting his public every day gives the beach a real relaxed friendly feel to it - there are some right characters which only add to the charm.cant comment on the boat trips etc sold - have never done them but there are mixed reports - you soon get a feel for what suits you
The restaurant - is a buffet set up with a choice of about 5 or 6 dishes. Sometimes it can be a bit disorganised, slow setting up tables and running out of plates etc - food is regularly replenished. Drinks are a bit of a lottery but always come eventually!!! All you need to do is ask and the staff could not be more helpful, falling over themselves to get whatever is needed. All in all it has a Caribbean charm about it so just relax and go with it, saves a lot of frustration!
There is a pier restaurant for a posher dinner which can be booked twice a week for your stay. We dont bother with this but the reports from other guests are always positive!
the food is fine - good breakfast with a wide choice - lunch in the beach side bar is lovely - salads and grilled food along with 2 or 3 hot dishes to choose from. We struggle a bit with the evening meal but we are fussy eaters - there is usually a couple of things we can find - but again - other guests seem to be tucking in no problem!
Drinks are free flowing from 10am to midnight - the local spirits and wine is very drinkable. Wide range of cocktails and also soft drinks and juices, coffee and tea. iced water available all day.
we love the afternoon tea on the pier at 4pm every day - lovely tea/coffee with little sandwiches and home baked cakes, often still warm - all with the idyllic backdrop of the bay.
The room - yes they could be described as a bit tired if you really look - but why would you?? In the caribbean why would you be interested in the room? we are outside 17 hours a day so who cares about a cracked tile or bit of discolouration to bath?? It is very clean and the housekeeping service is excellent - fresh towels daily and bed linen as required, the beds are the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever found. We had a ground floor pool view room this time with a lovely terrace to sit on. No complaints at all!!
The entertainment is OK couple of nights there is a live band which is good - the karaoke can be a bit of a flop if no one gets up! Poor Fenton does his best but they cant be persuaded! The fire man is fun - quite clever - we have seen him a few times now. the best night is saturday with the beach BBQ and they have a brilliant steel pan band who are fabulous - the atmosphere is amazing and we could listen to them every night! the entertainment can be loud if you are in the pool or family rooms i would imagine particularly difficult if you had young children who were trying to sleep, but its always over at 11pm
There are different activities in the pool area and beach - Errol and Fenton are always about to encourage, often with little take up!!!
The most amazing asset this hotel has is the staff - they are friendly and welcoming - particularly Dolston, Alick and Orlando in the bars and Roxanne and Negretta in the restaurants. assistant manager Devon is just delightful and always happy to help. The reception staff are welcoming and helpful and can usually sort stuff out - sometimes in Caribbean time - but just chill - it will happen!
Overall this is a solid 3 star hotel - dont expect the lap of luxury - if you want that then this is not the place for you - go and pay 5 star prices elsewhere . It is friendly, welcoming, relaxed and having tried several other places in the Caribbean there is nowhere else I would go. I cannot recommend it highly enough - but just remember - Chill, relax and accept you are on Caribbean time, you wont be disappointed.

Room Tip: garden rooms are further away from the bar and entertainment noise - i prefer poolside, spacious roo...

brilliant location, good food ,very friendly staff. This is a 3 star hotel in paradise yes it could do with a makeover but work was ongoing all the time we were there Jan 26-4th feb we had a room right by the beach,
yes we could here the sea all night and there were a few stones on the beach and a little drop into the the the lovely warm sea,and it rained for a few moments each day we were there, how unlucky were we.
This is a excellent three star hotel if you want more go to sandals down the road but be warned they didn't look very happy when we passed by, the same beach same sun, same rain, only 1500 pounds more.
Hope to go back sometime this year to get married there Debbie be warned.
sleep quality i have put very good as the waves lapping on the shore did wake us up but hay if that's the worse thing that happened on your holiday would you complain.
It was hard too waking at 6 o'clock to put the towels on the sunbeds and we didn't even have any Germans in the hotel not British I know but watching the sun come up each day ..... need I go on.

Room Tip: by the beach every time

good hotel great location, the food was fresh cooked every day, great beach grill for lunch in a very relaxed atmosphere. The staff are very friendly.Ken and Ashton on the water sports were very good.
I do not understand the poor reviews, yes it is not four or five star luxury but overall it was a good holiday and I got the hotel i expected. There are plenty of sunbeds people only reserve the ones with the umbrellas.I dont think the hotel should spoil a stunning beach with hundreds of umbrellas for everyone. Try to Ignore negatives if you have booked this and enjoy your holiday.

Room Tip: upgrade to a seaview room over pool

Found staff very helpful, but the place needs complete renovation. Hospitality suite for you to shower & change before leaving was dire. Beware the shops on the beach- we bought Susie's Hot Sauce at $12- only $6 at the airport. Didn't mind paying a bit over the top but double was a rip off

Thank you for your kind remarks about our staff. We go go out of our way to ensure our guests requests are attended to. Our hospitality suite is under repairs and will take a complete facelift within a week. Unfortunately the beach vendors are not part of the resort, we do offer a gift shop at a reasonable price on the property.
Looking forward to your visit in the near future.
Best Regards.

We stayed at the Halcyon Resort from the 26th Jan to the 2nd Feb. It was something that we booked at the last minute so didn't really do any research into the property. We arrived late evening and the check in process was pretty painless but upon entering our room we were horrified. The room could be described as tatty at best. The door lock was broken, the AC didn't work and there was lots of mould in the bathroom, specifically a huge circle of it on the ceiling tile above the shower. We immediately went back to the reception, got back into the line up and waited to talk with the girl who had checked us in. Once it was our turn in line I very discretely and off to one side of the main desk explained about our room. The receptionist was extremely curt and informed us to go and sit down and wait until she had checked everyone else in. This took about 30 minutes. Once there was no one else in line I had to go back to her as she showed no interest in coming over to where she made us sit and wait. She then proceeded to interrogate me about the state of the room. At one point she asked, “so if I go to the room right now I will see mould?” She did give us another room but we felt like it was us that had done something wrong. At no point did she give any apologies. The new room was much better but still very tired. That was our first impression, which as someone who has been involved in the hospitality industry for many years knows is key!
The whole resort is very very tired and needs a major overhaul. From the laundry issues which gave us the delight of having the same bath towels four the first 5 days, only one hand towel and no face clothes, to the broken and uncomfortable pool and beach chairs.
There are a number of things that could be done by management for very little cost that would cut down a number of the complaints we heard day after day. Have enough silverware and plates for all of your guests, there is nothing worse than standing around at a buffet with lots of food but nothing to put it on or eat it with. Having your staff smile especially the front line staff in the bars and restaurants is something that cost nothing but has huge benefits. The staffing at the pool bar is extremely inadequate with people constantly waiting around either for someone to serve them or for clean glasses. One other thing you might want to consider is sending some money on low cost items such as toasters for the breakfast. Do you really think that two basic 2 slot toasters is sufficient for the whole resort?
The food its self was generally plentiful with a decent variety to cater to most people although breakfast could have been better.
The location of the hotel is amazing with beautiful beaches but we would certainly not go back to this resort under any circumstances.

Have to give credit to the staff, very friendly and helpful. They can only work with what they've got. Our room was large and the bed a good size but the mattress was rock hard, a duvet was provided for more comfort. The room reminded me of a students bed sit with very cheap and tatty furnishings.
To secure a sun bed, you must rise at dawn and put your towels out. Many of the trees are dead around the resort, it's not pretty. The beach and sea are quite lovely.
Food is hit and miss - breakfast I think is the best meal.
If we had paid full price for this holiday, we would have cried.
Luckily the weather was fantastic, god knows what we would have done if we had to stay in our room. Wifi available, no problems.
We took a trip into St. John, don't bother, jewellery (particularly diamonds) are very overpriced. We were approached every few seconds by taxi drivers and vendors.
