“Very Nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2011

Just returned from a very nice stay at Hawksbill. This was our first trip there, but many of the couples we talked with had been there a number of times--with one couple returning for their 22nd visit. This all-inclusive resort is very pleasantly situated in an out of the way idyllic setting. The beaches, though technically public as all are in Antigua, are for all practical purposes private given the relatively remote location of the resort. We definitely would not recommend trying to find it by rental car. Taxis are readily available at the airport and wind through St. John's to get to the resort.
The resort is, as others have said, dated in a sort of classic way, but we found it to be quite nice overall. The landscapers were working constantly, and the resort is quite well staffed. The dining is not extravagant, but is certainly nicely done. The lobby and main dining room have lovely views to the southwest, affording wonderful sunsets over the Hawksbill rock.
The pace is slow and relaxed, and this is a place to unwind and enjoy "getting away from it all." Our garden bungalow was quiet, though the goats did come in and graze out our window early in the morning. We went to sleep each night to the sounds of the breaking waves. The "king" bed was actually a couple of smaller beds rolled together, so points off there.
Security is very visible though unobtrusive. These officers appear to take their work seriously, and patrol the grounds throughout the night.
The staff was pleasant and helpful. Our luggage was delayed a day by American Airlines, and the staff went "above and beyond" to make calls to insure that our bags were promptly delivered as soon as possible.
All in all, we found Hawksbill to be what we hoped it would be. We would definitely return again.

I just returned from Hawksbill (Dec 29 - Jan 5) and my wife and I were quite disappointed. Specifically:
- the key to our room (room 120) did not work. when the staff was informed they dismissed us and said to keep trying. several times we spent more than 5 minutes trying to open our door.
- the toilet would keep running.
- the exterior was in need of paint and repairs. Our railing was loose and wobbly.
- the glass in our windows was cracked.
- the beach area (beach 1) in front of our room needed landscaping. The sandy area in front was very thin (no large enough for a lounge chair) and the grassy area behind that was often muddy.
- the longest (and nicest) beach was the nude beach. The beach area had several goats grazing and their droppings (in the grassy area) could be smelled in the sandy area.
- the dining options are limited. One restaurant for breakfast and dinner and a separate one for lunch. Dinner was often buffet style. Breakfast options were quite limited. dining times were also limited and no room service was available.
- there was only one beer option.
- the pool was small and had dirt and debris in it.

The resort felt old and in need a significant make-over.

We had our honeymoon here and absolutely loved it. From the moment we arrived and received our welcome mimosas everybody was so friendly--and they paid attention to every little detail. Of course, the drinks were amazing. We definitely recommend the Hawksbill!

Having read several good reviews we chose The Hawksbill for a 1wk escape from London (Sept 10). Our plan was do very little and enjoy the glorious sunshine and some nice local cuisine. Location is fantastic and the general layout is very good (apart from a tiny pool but good beaches) . However, the food is very basic and boring. We had to live on the catch of the day for the entire week (fish & chips) as the rest of the menu is on par with a UK cafe menu! Tinned Tuna & Mayo salad EVERY DAY for our starter is not 3.5 star food! Unless you wish to live on standard UK food (meat and 2 veg) you will be very disappointed!! We certainly were not expecting gourmet delights but very disappointed with the food/wine & service! There is a wonderful fruit market close to the resort but none of the fantastic products are purchased by the hotel!

The staff are either fantastic or rather rude so good luck!

Silvia's garden tour is a great experience and she is a gem. Jermaine (bar supervisor) managed to send another couple to our "Birthday Table" then tried to blame us for the mix up! (Faulty Towers dose not even compare!) I had previously given her some fun birthday candles for my wife's birthday but they never appeared again and I was too scared to ask what happened to them!! The "cocktails" are basically a lethal glass of local spirits with not much thought or fun put into the mixing. The "fresh juices" are cartons of supermarket processed juices left to bake in the sun all day! David was the only bar man with a smile and who actually enjoyed his work. We tried to order a lime & soda (to mix with the cocktails) but the bar tender had not heard of this. We politely explained that it was the non alcoholic special the previous day and were abruptly informed that he was not present that day! Basil Faulty eat your heart out!!

It is certainly the location to unwind and do nothing but mainly aimed at 55 and over. Unless you are in this age group or much older you may get a little bored at times....especially if you dread the basic UK menu!

We would have to say that we disagree with many of the reviews. However, this may be down to only having 46 guests at the time of our visit (Sept 10). £2.6k for one week (couple / ac bungalow) was not worth it but we understand that you can book well in advance for much less. Please remember that we were not looking for anything special but poor food/ wine & service for a week is not our idea of fun! On a positive note...The service can be hilarious which hopefully adds to the fun as we have no intention of complaining whilst on holiday.

It is a pity, as this hotel has huge potential and could be the perfect location to visit if the management improved basic holiday requirements!

Hope this is helpful.

Colin & Alison

P.S Final comment which matches the hotel perfectly....We placed the do not disturb sign on our door as housekeeping had not appeared by 4.30pm....we received a telephone call at 5.00pm.."Sir, we notice that you have the do not disturb sign on your door"...."Yes, that is correct"....."OK, sorry to disturb you!"

Food and drink
Plentiful and good quality, well presented food. We enjoyed having the a la carte daily instead of the usual buffet. Portions were sized correctly and obviously some thought had gone into the menu. Wine with evening meal was reasonable quality and quite drinkable. Cocktails at the bar weren't massive or overly glam, but quite acceptable with all the staff quite accommodating for whatever you wanted.

Staff
Very friendly and attentive - I wouldn't agree with some reviews that they could be a little too relaxed, they were all pretty on the case. They also were very good with our 6 month baby, making a fuss at every opportunity.

Entertainment
Very little to do in the daytime, just good for chilling out. Don't bother with the windsurfing, a single 4m rig that has seen better days and an old hifly board - they really could do with sorting it out or getting shot of it. Tennis court looked resonable and people were playing it daily. Evening wise a band was on every day. Two of them were exceptional and got everyone dancing including the staff. One guy on the keyboards were pretty rubbish and should thinking about doing something else in life!

Accomodation
Garden room was pretty basic, don't expect a tv etc. Bathroom and floors were cleaned daily but the other surfaces didn't get much of a look in. We also had to ask to have some tea bags and milk wasn't provided, but like most we just took some in the afternoon and kept it in the little fridge in the room.

Overall, a really enjoyable stay, don't expect luxury, but if you like to have great friendly services and pretty good food you'll really enjoy it.

I've debated whether to write this review or not, therefore the delay. I love this place and all the great things everyone has written is true. All the staff are great, especially Jermaine, Millie, Everlie, and all the others.

Now for the unfortunate part of the trip. We had items stolen from the room. These were not the type of items that you would lock in your safe (i.e. Electric shaver) but it still was of value. The room was locked at all times so the theft was by someone with keys to the room I reported it to mgmt ( duty mgr Ornella), she passed us off to security and then went back in the office and closed the door. I insisted that someone from management join us. They then decided to parade us through the restaurant at diner time wig security so they could insecure the room. After that came the midnight call while in bed that the police were here and they needed to speak to us...convinced them to come back the next day. When they did return they did a full search of the room, including all our safe contents and bags. This made us feel like the thief. Next day we were forced to go to the local police station where the officer we were told to speak to was not there as planned. The only savior was Mgr Everlie Simon who we requested join us. Finally we did speak to someone ( imagine large lady in wool hat and t shirt in swealtering office watching soap opera on tv). Next day we were forced to meet with head of Hotel security (which is a separate company). We felt that everyone was just trying to cover their you know what. There was no offer of compensation even though I asked the GM about it.

Overall a very bad experience. The hotel nor the police did not mention to us anything about their investigation. We did not feel safe in the room at night since someone had obviously had the key to enter our locked room. I realize this sort of thing does happen as we are well travelled in the Caribbean but it was quite a shame since we had loved the Hawksbill so much. Sadly, we will likely never return due to the way we were treated.

A pretty and secluded location with 4 good beaches but rather spread out if walking is difficult. Most convenient bedrooms for the 2 restaurants and 2 bars are the superior sea view rooms located in the 2 main 2-storey buildings.
Our ground floor room (superior sea view) was large with 2 x 5 foot beds that were surprisingly comfortable. Good quality linen & towels. Sadly this quality was let down by the room being grubby around the edges though superficially clean. We were plagued by mosquitoes both inside and outside, our room was not sprayed and we saw no evidence of fogging around the grounds. This was the main downside of the holiday.
The beaches were well looked after and clean and there were plenty of sunbeds and shade although the fomer were rather old.
The food was generally quite good although the green salads were very limited. There were no tummy problems amongst the guests as far as we could acertain.
The alcoholic drinks were at times disappointing and sometimes undrinkable. The gin & red wine were particularly rough.
A few of the staff were very helpful but others gave service that was somewhat grudging.
The weather was mixed with good warmth, a fair amount of sun, and one very wet day. The sea was warm but rough to begin with and calmed down later. We were told this was typical for this time of year.
Evening entertainment was limited but OK.
Many of the people we met were repeat guests having been there over a dozen times. Occupancy rate seemed to be less than 50%.
On the whole this was a good holiday that was rather let down by a number of niggling issues. Would we go back? Probably not.
