“best resort/beaches on the island”

If you are looking for romance, rest and relaxation, this is the place for you. Patty and I have been here 4 years in a row. Hawksbills' staff is so freindly and accomodating that they make you feel like an old freind, not a hotel guest. The beaches are pristine, by far the best on the island. The hotel facilities are showing some signs of age, but overall we were very comfortable. The food was good but not excellent. We love Hawksbill so much that we got married here last month.

My wife and I last visited the Hawksbill when we were young and without a family this time we went back with our 19 and 15 year old sons.It still has a quite unique appeal. We loved the ambience then and despite the hotel not seemingly recommended for teenagers found that our boys loved it too. This is a beach holiday par excellence, snokeling great and safe swimming the watersports were overseen by PaPa Les safe and very professional.
The setting is to die for,the beaches are superb, and the staff in the main wonderful .
The entertainment was near zero but it didn't seem to matter, the Rio band have been playing there for 42 years some very old guys playing simple instruments and somehow appropriate music, a couple of local acts were sufficient. Long hot balmy days and a slow pace ensures early and long undisturbed nights with the sea washing the beachfront in ear shot.
The lease on the site is close to finishing and there is a definite lack of basic maintainance to the very fabric of the buildings and its furnishings. The grouting in the tileing in our room was falling out and the paintwork was chipped and the shutters on the windows were patched up giving a rather tired and grubby look. which makes life hard for the cleaning staff.
This is a senior management problem, and in many respects lets down the staff on the ground who in the main work hard to make the experience very special. The Front desk has two absolute pillars in Shenneth and Shamalya, who would grace any 5 star hotel with their smile and enthusiasm,David, and Adrian also shone.Agatha and Everlie lead by example.I cannot fault their desire to please and their pride.
You cannot really star rate the Hawksbill,it isn't a characterless Euro-Hotel on a beautiful beach. it has a personality and charm and I feel that it deserves 'improving' and this is essential it is shabby, but it has to be a balance I would not like the 'specialness' lost but it cannot be left as it is,if it is the staff are let down and they deserve better. Is it a good hotel..............the amount of people who return year in year out say all that needs to be said. Perhaps it's a gem and i should say no more in case more people discover it.......

We originally stayed at the Hawksbill for our honeymoon in 1991 and it was with some trepidation that we booked to return with our 12 year old daughter 18 years later. We remembered an idyliic location and friendly staff but could it provide as memorable a holiday second time around?
Thankfully it did, surpassing our expectations by a distance, mostly due to the exceptional service provided by the staff. I travel a lot on business and I can honestly say that I have never been looked after by such a professional front-desk team who dealt with us from our arrival with genuine warmth and impeccable courtesy.
The location is stunning, the beaches lovely and the food very good. While some of the furniture and decor is a bit tired, the swimming pool small and the nightlife quiet, these are minor grumbles considering what great value it represents.
We will return again.

My wife and I spent 2 weeks at the Hawksbill in June. We chose the Hawksbill as our destination to get married. After some indecision our Travel Agent, Kuoni, assured us we had made the right choice. WOW, was that an understatement.
From the moment of check-in the pace of life slowed to a gentle meander. Champagne and cold towels on arrival, luggage whisked away to room and the incredible vista of Hawkbill Bay to be taken-in from the Reception/Lounge area.
Rooms as stated by others are basic but perfectly clean and adequate. We booked a Beachfront Club but got upgraded to the Great House on our 2nd day. What a treat. A 180 degree balcony/patio area situated on it's on peninsula.
The breakfast birds are very likable, (if you like birds). We miss their antics, but for those that are not so inclined they are easily kept away if you stay with your food.
The food was superb. Huge self-service choice for breakfast, plus a full choice of cooked eggs, including eggs benedict, fantastic! Lunch is served by the Beach in the Sea Grapes bar. Our favourite was the fresh fish prepared on the grill. The fish alone was worth the the all-inclusive charge, you would need deep pockets to eat the same back home. Evening meals alternated between self-service buffet style and Waiter service A la Carte. Both were very enjoyable, as were the house wines which were included in the package.
There is no shortage of drink choices. You name it and somebody will be able to prepare it for you. Millie runs a cocktail school in the Sea Grapes bar on Wednesday lunch time, a must.
We must say a special thank you to Sandy, who was our wedding coordinater. Everything we asked for, she made happen. We had a day beyond our wildest dreams and all thanks to the staff at the Hawksbill.
We had 2 marvellous weeks in Antigua at the Hawksbill and would highly recommend it if you are looking for a little peace and seclusion.
If you go, seek out Oliver Calapus, Taxi driver/beach vendor. He can organise any trip you like, no surcharges, totally reliable and someone we shall remember for making our stay even more special. If there is someone on the Island that doesn't know him, we never found them.

To give this place the accolade of 'truly exceptional' is no frivolous compliment bestowed out of sun-baked-holiday-light-headedness. No, I've enjoyed many a far away and exotic break and this place really does stand out as truly exceptional. Right from the moment we stepped into the reception the service and atmosphere immediately relieved any stresses from the long journey from London. The staff greeted us with a generous glass of complimentary chilled champagne while we filled out arrival cards and promptly whisked our bags away to the room. The room was wonderful- a bungalow on the beach. It was air conditioned, had a fridge and en-suite bathroom but no TV. The latter wasn't at all a concern for us as we hadn't come to the Caribbean to watch telly! The fact that we could step out onto a beautiful, secluded sandy beach was awe-inspiringly gratifying.
We are usually sceptical of all-inclusive packages for such little money, so we had reservations, which turned out to be totally unfounded. The standard of every single meal was top-notch and I can confidently say that you would pay a great deal more, quite happily, to enjoy such quality and flavour. We were concerned about the birds at breakfast (having read a moaning review on here before we went), but they proved to be quite amusing and would only attack your food if you left it unattended.

The drinks were amazing and the friendly service of the waiters and bar staff made the simple experience of ordering a drink rather a pleasure. Try the Banana Colada- it is superb. You can even take your drinks on the beach and relax on one of the many sun loungers. As this is a small and somewhat secluded resort, the hours whiled away on the beach can be both exciting and serene. There is free water sports equipment such as canoes and snorkels to explore the coral reef just off the beach and once in the water you can easily fritter away several hours looking at the many tropical fish or looking for conch shells. If you just want to relax and drift away into your own world then this is infinitely possible as there is plenty of beach to go around- there are four decent beaches within the hotel grounds.

The hotel has some form of entertainment each night which adds great weight to its value for money. The steel drums band and bbq is a great night. For entertainments outside of the hotel it was cheap enough to hire a car from outside the entrance to get around the island at a fraction of the cost of tours and taxis. They had cars and 4 x 4's for hire at short notice.

One of the really impressive things was that when we came to check out, our flight wasn't until the evening but the hotel allowed us to keep our room until right up to the last minute. We still had free run of all the facilities such as the gorgeous sun trap that is the pool. The free drinks and food didn't stop either, nor did the warm service even though technically we were no longer paying customers!

We recently visited the Hawksbill, and had a very pleasant stay. Everyone has their own views about great holidays, and for us, it was great for the people that we met, the beautiful location, the friendly staff and the excellent food.

Before I went, I read about "The scene from the birds"....I disagree, the birds do feature as the eating areas are all open. It is to be expected, and they do provide a source of entertainment. If you do not like birds, then I can see this to put some people off.

This resort is very quiet, and at this time of year (also affected by credit crunch) the hotel is half full at best, so there is plenty of space on the beach. Snorkelling in the bay is fantastic, and I saw, a Manta Ray, sting rays, octopus and plenty of pretty reek fish...though missed the turtle said to be around.

Sailing here for beginners is great. The guys are very encouraging and keen to teach novices (me!)

Food, plenty and varied. On the AI package, there is plenty of opportunity to pile on some weight!

Negatives.....
Not all the rooms have Air Con, so if that is important to you check your selection. It is available as an upgrade for $37 per night!
Rooms are dated and basic. It did not bother me too much, as we only slept there, but it will upset some people.
Mosquitoes and sandflys love new arrivals, so pack some repellant.

Staff are very friendly, the best team that I have encountered on any Carribean island, they were helpful and cheerful, ...no problem!

Just come back from this hotel - it might only be classed 3* but the service was excellent. Some of the rooms are a little tired. Four beautiful beaches to choose from. We spent the last few days on the Eden beach which is the "clothing optional" beach. Only 1 or 2 other couples braved it while we were there. Although for the 10 days we were there it was very quiet overall so loads of space on whichever beach you chose.

We are vegetarians and after a few problems the kitchen tried very hard with dishes for us and on buffet nights there were plenty of vegetarian choices.

The onsite shop in the old sugar mill was very expensive US$35 for sun tan lotion so make sure you bring plenty.

There is a shuttle bus to St John's 3 times a week which is much cheaper than a cab at US$8 per person return.

Fantastic place to chill out in - no blaring tv's or disco music to disturb you.

We can't wait to go back!
