Owner description: Religious and architectural landmark, a beautiful neo-Baroque building looming largely over the city of St. John's.

This Cathedral is well worth the short walk up the hill from the harbour. Interesting architecture and history - with a nice little cathedral shop in the grounds. But beware - the Cathedral is undergoing major renovation, and was closed when we visited.

We could not visit the inside as the cathedral was closed for renovation. There was no guide to provide infos, but you could see/feel that this imposing church was breathing with history.
I was also kind of sad to see all the bushes around the church. Even though this was under renovation, they should have done a better job keeping it clean

As previous posters have stated their isn't much to see, except the outside, but it is a famous historic landmark. A wooden church inside the present building.

There was a good amount of people, but the preist came to welcome us, and told the parishioner, we were swiss tourists. Everybody was nice and smiling to us

On a recent trip to St. John's we ventured up the hill to visit the Cathedral. The Cathedral is currently under a preservation renovation so we were unable to see inside and the perimeter of the exterior of the building was fenced off as construction was occurring overhead. The grounds were beautiful considering it was an active work site. There is a visitor's both with knowledgeable guides operating it that will show pictures of the interior and provide details on the current renovation and the history of the Cathedral which is the second church to be built on the site as the original structure was destroyed by an earthquake century's ago (the original structure is not as near as impressive as what stands today). There is no fee for this attraction but donations are greatly accepted and appreciated and aid in the restoration.
It was really cool seeing some of the century old grave sites and imagining all of the history that has occurred on this site. I am glad that it is being restored and plan on revisiting the site on a future trip to admire the progress. Defiantly worth a visit while in St. John's and no more than 15 or 20 minutes is required (at least unitl the reno is complete).
