“A Great Beach Day”

Miguel's Holiday Adventure
Reviewed December 29, 2013

We were on a cruise to Antigua and decided to book a day with Miguel and his family on Prickly Pear Island. The day started with a taxi ride to Hodges Bay Resort, a deserted complex where we were to be picked up by boat and taken to the island. I'm not going to lie and say it wasn't scary when we got to Hodges Bay a little early by taxi (it's about a 15 minute ride from the port ($14+tip), We pulled up to an abandoned place in the middle of nowhere and the fence was chained shut but there was a sign so our taxi driver called and was told to yell for security who let us in and told us where to wait for the boat. Shortly after we arrived two vans of people who booked with Royal Caribbean (Crusoe Island Adventure) showed up, whew! Then, just after the appointed time, two boats came ashore and picked us up for a delightful day on a little island that was just amazing. Miguel and his family are wonderful caring people, we could not have asked for anything more. The reef just off the island provided awesome snorkeling with equipment they provided and it was overall just a great day, gorgeous aqua water, beach chairs, beautiful breezes, great lunch and all the drinks you wanted (we got special lobster salad because we booked directly with Miguel instead of through the cruise line!). If we ever get back to Antigua again we will definitely go to Prickly Pear Island with Miguel. I think we saved about $30/person booking directly but then we had to take a taxi on our own but at least we weren't crammed in a van with 12 other people! So if you're looking for a perfect beach day this is the excursion. They get you back promptly at 3:00 so you can have your taxi pick you back up and have a little time for shopping at the port! Just a great day.

We came in via cruise ship and every other beach we had been to we were constantly bothered by vendors. This was a breath of fresh air. The snorkeling was terrific, the food and drink were abundant and the people were helpful. We all left happy and content. This was money well spent and will be on our to do list every visit.

My wife and I spent a week in Antigua and had to try an excursion to Prickly Pear island. we had a great time on the island with Miguel (owner) and his family. The view was incredible like out of a magazine, food was spectacular and all you can drink what more could you ask for. Lounge chairs and umbrellas were provided if you needed and Miguel and his family were wonderful. I would highly recommend doing this if you go to Antigua.

Everything others say is true. Yes it is strange to stand outside locked gates waiting to be let onto the site of a disused Hotel before being taken over to the island. Yes Miguel and his family are really friendly and accommodating. Yes the food is good and the drinks plentiful. Yes it is a small deserted island surrounded by shallow warm crystal clear water. OK the coral has seen better days but this is an idyllic way to laze away a day. Thanks go to all for an unforgettable day.
