I was disappointed with my stay at Hodges Bay. The staff were very nice and friendly although some were not as knowledgeable as I expect from a 4/5 star hotel. The property is lovely. That being said the faults and issues are many. We had hot showers once during our week stay. I called maintenance and that night we had hot water. Never again. The elevators are not working and the lobby and beach are two flights of stairs away from each other. The hotel does not have any type of sundry shop. Our room was cleaned very late 4/5pm many days. It appears that this hotel opened before completed their renovation and may be out of money. Nothing terrible but a far cry from 4/5 stars. I give 3 because our room was lovely and the staff were kind.

Dear judyhynes2017

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review following your recent stay here at Hodges Bay Resort and Spa we greatly appreciate the feedback, however I am disappointed to read that we failed to meet your expectations, and for that I apologize.

We have identified that during the room orientations we have failed to inform guests about the anti-scald button on the showers that are in place to prevent possible scalding. We have performed the necessary retraining with the team to ensure that this information is communicated to guest on arrival.

I would really like to have the opportunity to make it up to you. I you could please contact me at bmurphy@HodgesBay.com I will make sure that your next experience fully meets your expectations.

Regards,

Brian Murphy

We just got back from a 4 night stay in a 4 bedroom villa. The staff absolutely makes this resort. Our butlers Romane, Jonathan and Craig were fabulous. They bent over backwards to help us from paper towels, reservations and anything we needed in our villa. Saron and Kathleen at breakfast and lunch brought a smile to our faces!! Prickly pear island is a must as were Stella and Cecilia’s restaurants. Close to airport and great for families!! We will be back

We travelled as a family of 5, (3 grown up children) and stayed in a see view apt . The hotel has recently been updated so as you might expect a few things not quite finished.
Most of the staff were great, hospitable and friendly. Romain on the front desk is excellent and your go to person about places to go and things to see and do. Brian the ops director was also great and always on hand to help out on any questions. In terms of small suggestions the hotel could do with putting an Island guide of some sort together in the rooms or having one in reception and they need to get the Spa finished before charging full price for treatments.. Being charged full price for treatments in a refurbed apt was not ideal.

The gym in the hotel has everything you need and the pools are very good as well. The beach is quite small but does the job as there are plenty of beaches nearby if you want to go further afield.

We only ate a few times at the main restaurant overlooking the beach as we choose to. go and explore different restaurants in the area. Ceclias and Papa Zouk the stand out ones. The restaurant setting at the hotel was great, the food could do with a little improvement. Breakfast was excellent. Overall a really great family holiday was had by all .The hotel feels less of a resort and more of an upmarket boutique hotel. It's location only 10 mins from the airport means you can be off the plane and in the sea in less than an hour. Overall highly recommended.

We have been traveling with and without kids for several years and relied on online reviews to help us make good choices. This is the first time that I have written a review and hopefully this will help contribute to someone else’s vacation planning. In April 2019 we traveled to Antigua and stayed at the newly opened Hodges Bay Resort and Spa. We had a little snafu at the airport when our transportation to the resort was not there. A woman working for a transportation agency asked where we were going, made a call and arranged for our transportation. Ten minutes later we were in the lobby of the Hodges Bay Resort and Spa being greeting with a welcome cocktail. Our room wasn’t ready so the kids changed into swimsuits and started enjoying the pool. First off, the staff at the resort were amazing. They greeted us like family and went out of their way to make sure that we had everything we needed or wanted. Romane who must have been the staff supervisor looked after us while our room was being readied. He told us about the resort, the island’s history and special things to do. Once in the room we were impressed with the complimentary beverages, espresso coffee maker, furnishing and especially the view!

On the first night we ran out of hot water and let the manager Brian know about it. He got right on it and corrected the problem for us. (I don’t know what he did, just that the next time we showered there was plenty of hot water.) Similarly if there was anything that we wanted/needed, staff immediately set out to get it for us.

There are 3 restaurants. One was more of a fine dining dinner service. The other 2 White Sails and Black Sails were for lunch/dinner. Both overlook the beach/ocean with covered outdoor seating. Black Sails offered a bar and tapas style menu all of which were very tasty. My favorites were the tuna poke rice bowl and jerk fish tacos, while the kids enjoyed the California roll and calamari. White Sails offered a variety of pizzas that we all loved and enjoyed most days by the pool and beach for lunch. The Rum Punch was also a favorite drink and a must try for those who indulge.

Included in our stay was a buffet style breakfast with omelet station, other offerings like french toast and eggs benedict were on the menu by request. Plenty of options for everyone and quite delicious! The staff would bring around a small snack around 10am by pool/ocean as well as ice cream each day around 3pm which was a nice touch.

The kids loved the kids club. It had activities like tie dying, foos ball, video games and tennis. Prickly Pear Island was really cool. The owner Jeff took us over on his boat and we had the entire island to ourselves. He left us a walk talky to call him when we were ready to leave, but came back to check on us after an hour when he hadn’t heard from us. He was happy to leave and come back for us after another hour or so. The snorkeling was very good. There were lots of fish, coral, lizards, and shells to discover.

Elroy Shaquile, Ifari and/or Kevil were always available to tell us about what was going on at the resort. Some people said that they didn’t know about various activities, I guess they didn’t talk much to one of our friends. Now as with any island there is a bit of “island time” to adjust to, but we didn’t mind sitting back relaxing and enjoying the wonderful views and amenities.

The day after we got home my daughter came to me and said, “I don’t feel like this is home.” I asked her where was home? She looked at me and said, “Antigua!” Needless to say, we will be back.

Room tip: Talk to Romane or Brian!

We absolutely loved our week long stay at the resort. For our family with young kids it was the perfect fit. Beautiful grounds, great beach, super friendly staff, delicious food and large clean rooms. To be clear, it may not be for everyone. If you are looking for "U.S. Style" cold perfection and efficiency, this is not the place for you. Head to a chain resort in Florida. Hodges Bay successfully straddles "luxury" and "local boutique" without losing its charm. Yes, your drink may take a bit longer, but it's also not coming from a premade "bag o' alcohol". Food may be quirky, but it's not delivered by out sourced food service companies.

The staff will do anything to accommodate, and puts up with a good deal of over privileged Americans and Brits and does so with no edge, only a smile! No one had a single hand out during our entire stay, and seemed genuinely happy to help out.

The rooms were immaculately cleaned daily, the activities staff for kids couldn't be sweeter and the front desk staff (which could use a bit more training for sure) would bend over backward to please the guests.

This place is truly a jewel - tucked away, big enough to have services like a small kids club and gym; not so big to feel impersonal at all. Room to feel secluded when you want to; cozy enough to make new friends. A real winner that (I hope) will continue to fly under the radar . . .

One small tip: tone down the music at the pools. People are there to relax, not have a dance-off! :)

We will be back -- and hope to make Hodges Bay a yearly Family tradition!

Room tip: Ocean Front all the way!
