Dutchman's Bay Cottages
Reviewed January 26, 2014

A wonderful vacation spot for those who want to get away. Location was amazing in that it was right on the beach and yet only a few minutes from the airport, other beaches and the grocery store. David was great. Very helpful but never intrusive. The cabins are quaint and have everything needed to be self sufficient on vacation or to use as just a stopping point. We stayed in the 1 bedroom on the water. Wind was definitely moving but we found it soothing and it definitely kept the place cool and bug free. We did rent a car for the week and the $20 on the GARMIN upgrade for Antigua was priceless. We were able to explore the entire island and still find our way back without any problems. David hooked us up with Mikey Pigott at Fishantigua.com Great trip that resulted in my first sail fish. He also sent us to Shelley Heights one night for sunset party. Was cool but not our seen because of so many tourists.
There are two restaurants within walking distance. We took advantage of both. Hours are a little tricky but we asked on the first day and planned accordingly. They were excellent.
Marlene the maid comes 3x a week and was very nice.
We did all our shopping at The Gourmet Basket and the wine shop next door. Great place for the basics.

Room Tip: 1Bedroom on the beach for the view and privacy.

My hubby and I stayed here from May 31-June 7. This place is a slice of heaven. We just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary and wanted to try something different than our usual AI resort experience. Boy am I glad we did! We stayed in the oceanfront 1 bedroom cottage. Other than a few guests over the weekend, we had the place to ourselves (due to off season). I would have to tell you this is a little bit like cabin camping. The cottages are nice and clean. There is a fully equipped kitchen, bath, and bedroom. There is no air conditioner. The cottage is waterfront and has a continuous trade wind breeze. There are ceiling fans. The windows have shutters and screens so there is no bugs but always a breeze. There are three rows of cottages - I will have to say I recommend front row or second row. I think the last row of cottages might be warm as they don't receive the same trade wind breeze. We were delighted with our cottage choice. The beach front is so nice to look at, there was never anyone else on the beach or in the water (except for David, the owner). We loved the privacy. The water however has a lot of seaweed in it so it is not as clear and calm as the Caribbean side of the island. This was okay though. You can still swim and hang out there just don't mind the seaweed! I recommend renting a car. Others have said they managed without them but you are in an isolated area and there is so much to explore on the island you will truly miss some of the best parts and the flexibility to go on a whim wherever you like. You have to see the beaches. My favorite was Half Moon Bay. So beautiful and peaceful. Take water and food with you as there is nothing around there. There were a few vendors but count on taking your supplies. Great snorkeling here out from the beach at the far right side. Also you can find shells here if you walk out to the rocks on the far right side. There is some shade if you walk down the beach to the right (it is a bit of a walk but worth the tree shade). A must see.

We purchased groceries at the Epicurean which is a large grocery store - they have alot of American brands. There is also two small grocery stores near the cottages. Food is a bit pricey here. They have to import everything in.

We went to the market on Saturday morning which was very interesting local experience. I recommend. I didn't find anything to buy really in any of the shops downtown. Usual tourist stuff.

I recommend Adventure Tours Eco tour (see my review there).

These cottages are owned by David Fuller. He is a great guy and very interesting - ask him about his family. He was very helpful and made lots of suggestions. He made us feel like part of his family and even invited us over to his daughter's birthday party. He was always available to help out or answer questions. He lives right next to the cottages. He also cut open a couple of coconuts so that we could try fresh coconut water and fresh coconut. Now that's a special touch!

There is a pool that you can use next store to the cottages. The Tides restaurant is next store, which is David's father's restaurant. They have a grill and bar there if you want to eat there. We had lunch there one day and it was good. We swam in the pool one time the whole week. You don't need it with the lovely ocean right at your toes.

There is no safe in the cottages. I was a little concerned about safety before I went. But we had no incidents and I felt very safe. The property is located between two military bases and near the college. David also hires a security guard at night for the extra piece of mind.

All in all, this is a wonderful place. I truly encourage you to consider this option. Especially in the off season as it was so nice and peaceful to have the place to our selves! I would go again in a heartbeat and I recommend it to you! If you have any other questions, let me know. I am happy to help.

Room Tip: Choose 1st row cottages or second row cottages.

Dutchman's bay cottages are a fantastic value, on a small beach on the windward side of the island.

The cottages are tremendous and they get a lovely trade wind breeze that keeps them very comfortable. They are a bit off the beaten track, which is brilliant for quiet and relaxing holiday. The cottages are well equipped with comfortable furnishings and full kitchens, and lovely porches to enjoy the breezy Caribbean sun. David is a tremendous host, who gives great advice and directions and is quick to help solve any issue or offer help.

The neighboring the Tides restaurant offers tasty food in both full dining and beach grill. Jabberwock beach is a short drive away for world class kiting and windsurfing.

Will definitely be returning.

Adjacent to airport, great cabins, very quite. We have rented cabins and houses in many locations and are very selective. We spent a week there in March with our teen age kids and were very pleased by quality of location and value.

We just returned from our 3rd visit to the cottages and so obviously we love the location. After a long hot day it is so nice to return to the cottages -- breezy, cool, and quiet. This time we rented a car - we got lost a lot the first week, but had it figured out the 2nd week. You don't have to have a car - we never did before - but it was convenient. However, if you are only going to St John's , save yourself the headache of trying to drive in there - hop the bus !

Just to update you on some changes, the Tides restaurant next door has added an outdoor grill with a nice large (shaded) seating area, and it is a great spot - excellent food and affordable. We had lunch there, or take-out, a few times !! There is also a swimming pool there too.

Already planning on going back next winter. Antigua is a great island with very welcoming people and an easy island for self-catering holidays.

Message me if you have any questions. Be glad to help if I can.
(Just a note, if you are worried it will be a little too windy, book the 2nd row cottages instead of ocean front. You will still be close to the beach and have some view , especially from the middle cottage of the 2nd row - we stayed in that one the last two times)

We and another couple stayed in a two bedroom bungalow 30 feet from the Caribbean. The breezes were fantastic, the view was so beautiful. The facility was well maintained and the staff non intrusive. We were within walking distance of a couple of very good restaurants - truly it was a stay in Paradise!

We have just returned from a 12 day stay at DBC (Jan 2013) booked through Planet Windsurf.
Agree with all the previous positive comments about David & the cottages. Most of the other cottages were unoccupied so David moved us into a 2 bed cottage right on the edge of the ocean to protect us from the howling wind (apparently the conditions the first week were unusual).
Although dissapointed initially by the weather and consequence that we couldn't windsurf straightaway, we found plenty to do on the non windy side of the Island and it was lovely to come back to our special cottage which we fell in love with more and more as we spent time there.
As the weather changed again to more typical for time of year, our windsurfing gear was delivered by Patrick from the local school at Jabberwock Beach (5 mins away) so that we could windsurf when we liked from right outside our cottage which was amazing..David is also an ex windsurfer and gave us some tips about places to windsurf to..our trip out to a neighbouring deserted Island was particularly memorable and bless him, David had been keeping a discreet eye on us in case we went off course!!
We were very sad to leave our lovely cottage and could have easily stayed longer enjoying the peace and the waves..
Some tips:
Don't bring a hairdryer as there's one there!
Don't put anything in your shopping basket that you've not checked price of as it'll probably cost a fortune..
Don't worry if you get a puncture as there's loads of cheap tyre places that will fix it for a fiver
The rainforest canopy tour was expensive for what it was..
Shirley Heights is full of posh yaughty rich kids but is worth the visit for the steel band and the reggae.
Don't get talked into giving extra money to the hire car company when you leave. I got into a big argument with Alamo but when I stood my ground, she eventually backed down and said 'oh yes actually you have paid already'
Get a direct flight (Virgin were brilliant)

Room Tip: cottage on beachfront has best view but can get very noisy with the wind
