We sailed with Celebrity and asked one of the crew where the best beach was. They recommended this, and we have no worries about doing also. 15 min taxi, I think $10 each passenger, a few $'s for a sunbed and 5 glorious hours of very few people and gorgeous Antigua weather. Probably as near to paradise as you can get. Nothing to do but sip Mojito's and gaze at the gorgeous bay, food if needed. Rebook your taxi to pick you up at an agreed time.

My husband and I were on a tight budget during a recent cruise and on the recommendation of a very knowledgeable taxi driver we encountered outside of the port, we spent a few hours on Runaway Beach. The taxi ride was cheap and short, and we rode through what the taxi driver described as the "ghetto." Some folks may be turned off by this, but my husband and I really like to see how and where the locals live when we travel. Anyway, we got to the beach and walked up through the Sandhaven Beach Bar to find a picture-perfect white sand Caribbean beach. It was truly postcard pretty and not crowded at all, which made for a very relaxing experience. The water was beautiful and the waves gentle, the sand was so soft we saw no need to rent chairs, no one tried to sell us anything (a rare experience during this cruise) and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in perfect weather and people watching. Would return in a heartbeat. Even though Runaway isn't as popular as Dickenson, taxis are lined up outside of the beach bar all day, so you'll never have trouble getting back to town or to your cruise ship.

For several months, I lived between Dickenson Bay and Runaway Beach and the two beaches are completely different. If you like crowds, a few restaurants, and people selling beach items, go to Dickinson. It can be fun as long as a cruise ship hasn't just dumped a load of people on the beach. But if you like a long and completely empty beach, you might try Runaway. Ignore that one review about the smell -- that was years ago. There's no smell now and my husband and I really enjoyed the little beach bar. It's a little bit seedy, but that's how a beach bar should be, right?

We took a taxi, 10 dollars for up to 4 people from the pier.
He dropped us off at Sandhaven Beach and Bar. We were the only ones there.
The beach is at least a mile long, pure white sand. A lady was selling tee shirts and sun dresses but never approached us. A short way down the beach you can rent horses and ride along the beach.
No solicitation whatsoever. A great beach for those wanting paradise with nothing to do. Bring a book or just enjoy the warm ocean water. Chair and umbrella rental was available at 6 dollars per item. This is a 5 star beach with out the cost of a day pass at a hotel.
The ;people are very nice and laid back, no hawkers and they want tourists to be comfortable and return.

We arrived in Antigua on a cruise ship and skipped the cruise line pricey excursions and just took a taxi to the nearest beach. 5 minutes later we were presented with a little paradise. The beach is a horseshoe shape with white surgar sand and a lovely and calm sea. And it is not crowded. You can rent beach lounge chairs, and umbrellas for a decent price. A "saucy" waitress from the beach bar - restaurant will serve you snacks and drinks on the beach. What more could you ask for? We had told the taxi driver to pick us up in 3 hours, and when he returned we asked for more time. We spent the rest of the day on this superb beach. Even had a nice shady nap. We lunched at the beach bar restaurant and the food was quite adequate. We are returning to Antigua next February and we certainly will visit Runaway Bay Beach.
