Owner description: An excellent beach for snorkelling and beachcombing.

Darkwood Beach is only feet from the roadside and as you drive by you can see the turquoise water lapping to the shore. It is a beautiful beach and we classed it as "our beach" as we could see our villa from it. We visited in late Aug and it was always quiet with just a few people around.

We have visited many beaches in the Caribbean and this is our favorite. When we arrived on our cruise ship we chose to take a taxi to one of the most unknown beaches on Antigua. When we arrived the bar was less than fancy, however, the food and service was good. We really enjoyed the snorkeling and most enjoyed the excellent sea shell hunting. We found several conk shells, not whole, but quit pretty. The sand was some of the finest we have experienced. What a great find.

It couldn't be easier to get to Darkwood. It is right on the main road with ample parking. Car, taxi, or bus are great to get there. There is a couple restaurants on the beach.

The beach was good for the kids to swim, but much better for snorkelling near shore. The only problem we came across was that there was spearfishers on one of the days so we moved down the beach a ways. We went there 3 different days and enjoyed ourselves each time. We will definitely go again on our next trip.

The beaches on the west coast of Antigua outdo each other for aquamarine seas and golden sands but Darkwood was our absolute favourite. We visited almost everyday for a swim or for food.

We were there in low season (May-June) and the beach was lovely and quiet; we had it to ourselves a lot of the time.

The sea is an amazing shade of blue; the water gets deep pretty quickly so keep young kids in arm bands or closely supervised. There is some good snorkelling on the reef/rocks on the right hand side of the beach and the restaurant rents sunbeds ($5 each) and provides welcome shade.

The food was good, but the menu is fairly limited and waiting times were lengthy particularly if there were a few people dining.

Darkwood beach is one of the prettiest beach you will ever find. However, if you don't like water, waves or sand, stay in town.
If you walk to the bus stop next to open market, hop on bus #20 and take a 20 minute ride to Darkwood beach. Skip the local taxis, who charge $30 ech way.
Pros: exotic beach, secluded, great bar, chair/umbrella rental, massage
Cons: waves can be a little tricky
Note: you can skip the chair rental and walk to your right...huge shaded areas
