“Very warm welcome”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

Stayed at The Rock after being transfered there by the Maes Manor after a "leak in the room". We were already out for the day when we were told we were being moved, having left our luggage at the Maes, so after a bit of worry about everything being sorted it was such a relief to arrive to a warm welcome at The Rock when we arrived after 10pm. Jennifer and Paul could not have been friendlier, ensuring that we were warm, putting the kettle on for us in the guest kitchen, it was all most welcome! And when we were shown the room we could not have been happier, spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished, couldn't have asked for more. Caught a glimpse of one of the other rooms the next morning and that too was equally impressive. Was really impressed with the extra touches in the room that you don't get in every hotel - cotton wool, bottled water and a clothes brush for example. There's even hairspray, painkillers,de-icer and a phone/device charger in the kitchen if you need them! Loved the feature of a kitchen for the guests, again it was spotlessly clean, and stocked with everything you could ever need - orange juice, milk, eggs, cheese, butter, meats for a continental breakfast, cereals, all sorts of bread, shortbread biscuits, I could go on! The table was all laid ready for the morning and we enjoyed a lovely breakfast, just the two of us.

After stumbling upon The Rock by accident we will definitely be going back again!

We stayed overnight at The Rock to attend a local wedding at a local church. From the very minute we arrived we were treated to the warmest welcome we have ever received anywhere. The hotel was well cared for, spotlessly clean and well run. Paul and Jennifer Taylor live on site and saw to it that everything we expected was provided. The themed rooms were uniquely decorated, well-stocked and spotlessly clean. The bed was so comfortable and we woke refreshed and ready to go. Other couples in our party who also stayed at the Rock agreed that it is an oasis. It stands far above the mediocre who try to charge similar prices to this beautifully well-run, family tavern. The restaurant and bar menus were superb and the beer, excellent too. Remember that the guests all share an upstairs kitchen where the continental breakfast is self-served around a large central table, but clean, tidy & plenty of choice, including fresh eggs. No Full English available, though.

Room Tip: For space, the Red room or the Threepenny bit room. B&W, Duck Blue and Threepenny Bit are at the...

The Rock was a little oasis. My wife and I stayed for four nights with friends and enjoyed the uniqueness of the Inn. The food was delicious, even having recommendations from the chef. The rooms were tasteful and extremely clean and nothing was too much trouble for Jennifer and Paul. We came away feeling we had stayed with friends and would most definitey stay again at the Rock. Thank you Jen and Paul for making our stay most memorable.

Room Tip: Threepenny Bit room is on the front, no problem with traffic noise.

We stayed for 4 nights, very clean comfortable rooms, excellent food and service. Jenn and Paul went out of their way to make the stay successful, even to the extent of sharing their supper with us on their day off. The DIY breakfast idea is a bit of fun and you meet interesting other guests. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: choose the "Blue Room" if possible.

I have stayed at The Rock twice and for travelers who are not looking for full Welsh breakfast luxury :), this hotel is highly recommended.

The hotel itself has several rooms only, and the rooms are located on top of the tavern. Each room has its own theme, and they are nicely decorated.

During my first stay, I was told by the owners (Paul and Jen) that the place was designed such that travelers would feel at home. And yes, it was just like home since there are some personal kits and first aids available for forgetful traveler or those in hurry who might left some things. There are books to be read for book-lovers. Had cough during one of my stays there and fortunately there was cough medicine available in the kitchen, so I could grab one immediately as remedy for the throat. For someone who came from a long way like me, this concept is very helpful in such an unexpected occassion like that.

Breakfast is self-service - some people will mind about this but I do not have concern, dinner at the tavern was a tremendous experience as they have bunch of recommended menu, there was not enough days for me to try everything, but the curry and wine were good. Heard that continental breakfast can be prepared on request but I did not ask for it.

Cleanliness: superb.

Room: very nice, simple decoration but classy. Corridor going to the room is quite narrow, be careful with the steep stair.

Paul and Jen showed much hospitality. I read on several reviews that they don't welcome children but I did not have any experience about this since I traveled alone.

Last but not the least, their website is a reliable source to get information about the hotel. The rooms are exactly as they are shown in the website. As traveler, several times I was disappointed when encountering difference between what I saw in website and in actual, but not with The Rock.

We searched long & hard for a central base from which to explore this very attractive part of Wales, and The Rock stood out immediately we had found it. A phone call later with the hosts confirmed we had made a good choice & instantly looked forward to arriving for a few days break.

Our party of 4 arrived in the rain, well it was the UK summer(!), to be immediately warmed by the excellent welcome from the hosts Jennifer, Paul and staff. There happened to be a Tapas evening in the bar, which worked well with watching the England footie and, as we noticed, was freshly topped up throughout the evening.

One comment worthy of note, is that the locals clearly reflected the bon homie of their hosts, and certainly made our visit even more enjoyable.

The general decor throughout the Tavern, and especially the colour themed bedrooms, are well appointed, comparing favourably with the modern boutique style hotels that we have stayed at in recent years. Everything was superbly clean, and looked well maintained.

We particularly liked the flexibility of the self catering style breakfast arrangements which included our own separate, very well stocked kitchen, regularly topped up with excellent provisions - and all within the overnight cost! However for those wishing to be served a full cooked breakfast, this could be arranged with the hosts accordingly.

Conclusion:
It is always pleasing to report good news in these testing times, and this is a place we would certainly stay at again for its welcome, service and importantly value for money!

The last time we went to the rock we had a very professional experience! We were getting married at the Maes Manor, based a few hundred yards away and wanted to offer a slightly cheaper option to guests, The owner answered all of our questions and even offered a tour which was greatly appreciated. The rooms look lovely and this traditional inn is a beautiful place to stop.

We returned to the Rock yesterday for lunch. The Rock serves food from 12pm and you can choose from a lunchtime menu where they offer 2 meals for £10. Or you can order from their evening menu which is slightly more expensive (however, definately worth it). The local art is displayed throughout the inn and there is a piece which I am tempted to buy. It is a very traditional pub and I really loved the local art they displayed. The menu's state that they cannot accomodate for food allergies, however it is a pub and this should be expected and didn't effect our experience.

My husband had the fish and chips, I had the scampi and my nan had the sausages and mash. My nan, at 86 goes out for dinner approximately 4 times a week and loves the Rock. She is not afraid to complain either...and she ate everything. The fish my husband ordered was the thickest piece of fish I have ever seen and is on par with our favourite fish restaurant. The inn got very busy whilst we were there, but the service was quick and the food was fresh and hot. The portions were all very generous; so generous in fact, we didn't have any room for dessert.

The appearance of the building is first class and the flower arrangements have led to the building being awarded for it's beautiful appearance. I loved our experience here and will be returning.

Thank you.
