We have visited the newly opened Gate a couple of times for dinner. Each time we have been given a really warm and friendly welcome. The menu choice is excellent. The belly pork dish on the menu is superb, mustard mash, beautifully cooked lean belly pork, black pudding, apple ring and crackling all placed as a tower in the centre of a deep plate. The desert of creme brûlée served with short bread ( both home made) is the best I've ever tasted. Sunday lunch here is also delicious, with a choice of meats and fresh veg. Service is excellent, staff are lovely. Ambience in both the bar and restaurant are perfect. Keep up the good work. Hope to revisit very soon

It’s the morning after the St Andrews Gourmet Evening at The Gate at Llanfrechfa Mon, and what a brilliant evening it was.
The Gate has recently re-opened under the management of Julie and James Dawson previously of The Golden Lion at Magor.
The Gate has been redecorated to a very high standard and includes a baby grand piano in the restaurant.
We have already enjoyed several delicious restaurant meals as well as fabulous Sunday Lunches but these were surpassed by the Gourmet evening yesterday.
The meal consisted of a six course dinner with 5 different wines. With many of the courses there was a choice ie Scots Rossini or Whole Roast Grouse. The Scots Rossini was a Scottish take on a traditional Tornados Rossini and was topped with Lorne sausage and sat on a Tattie Scone. Absolutely superb. Other courses included Haggis Tartlet and Poached Salmon and Sole.
With Sorbet , Cheese and Clootie Dumpling or Cranachan the meal would have done justice to a Michelin Stared Restaurant.
The wines were equally as good ranging from a Vacqueyras Beaumirail 2010 To a Bacalhoa Vinhos de Portugal Dessert wine.
I understand the next Gourmet Evening will be Burns night. I cant wait!
However I would thoroughly recommend The Gate for evening meals Sunday Lunches and even Bar snacks. It really is a gastronomic pearl in Monmouthshire

Only my second visit to this newly refurbished pub and I have to say the food could not have been better.
Well renowned for the quality of its meals in the 80s, The Gate was taken over about 20 years and ended up becoming a curry house. Thankfully the current owner has had the sense to return it to its former glory.
When you walk through the door you're greeted by owner's dog, and a selection of four real ales - including Butty Bach and Doom Bar - and one real cider.
The menu is a mix of pub staples (sausage and mash, steak and chips) and more adventurous fare (Creole spiced blackened salmon).
My three fellow diners ordered the sea bass, hake and pork medallions, while I settled for the belly pork with black pudding.
Each was perfectly cooked and seasoned with the subtle flavour of the hake in particular being singled out for praise by my better half.
A fine addition then to the local 'gastropub' scene - it still makes me wince each time I have to type the 'g' word, but what else to call it? - and (potentially) a serious rival to the nearby Bell Inn, Caerleon.
