We thoroughly enjoyed our week-long stay at the TEMBO Guesthouse in Longido! When we arrived from Arusha, we were warmly greeted by the staff who immediately made us feel at home. We found the rooms very clean and comfortable, and we enjoyed the convenience of warm showers and Western-style toilets.
The Guesthouse is within easy walking distance of the Maasai community, so there are many opportunities to learn about the Maasai way of life by visiting the market, shops, library, schools and churches. It was enjoyable coming back to the Guesthouse after our day's activities because we were able to refresh ourselves and have a leisurely cup of chai on the patio. This is a great spot for viewing Mount Kilimanjaro at sunrise, doing some quiet reading, or listening to birdsong and the chimes of cow bells as the herds are led home at sunset.
The patio overlooks the garden which produces some of the vegetables for the Guesthouse kitchen. We always looked forward to the satisfying meals, prepared by the chef and served in the inner courtyard. We especially loved the chipsi mayai, chapattis with maple syrup, ndizi, and the African chocolate cake baked in the solar oven.
During our stay, the Guesthouse staff not only took care of our accommodation needs, but also helped us learn about the people and customs of Tanzania. They offered impromptu Swahili lessons and arranged for a guide to take us hiking on Mount Longido. They really helped make our stay in Longido a rich, cultural experience. When it was time to leave, we felt like we were saying good-bye to a new-found family. We would definitely recommend the TEMBO Guesthouse in Longido!

Very comfortable and cool, even when it was extremely hot outside. and the showers were absolutely luxurious after a long, sweaty day.
The food was delicious, and prepared with care.
The staff were supportive, and always eager to hear stories from the day's events.
The Guesthouse has a patio for sitting out at night under the big sky. (Be prepared for windy nights! The winds normally kicked in before bed and stayed strong most of the night.)
People in the village of Longido are very welcoming: there's usually a lively football match to see, and I can recommend the cultural tour that includes a hike up Longido Mountain.

TEMBO Guesthouse is an oasis--western style accommodation (flush toilets, showers), while enjoying traditional Massai influences at the base of Mt Longido. Food and service is excellent.

A special place on the road from Nairobi to Arusha. Staffed by local people and all revenue going to fund education for girls and micro business opportunities for women.
The staff are amazing, warm and welcoming and full of knowledge . The food is simple but nourishing and served in a communal room that is open for discussion and sharing of cultural stories.
The rooms are clean and comfortable.
Many opportunities for learning and helping and traveling from this base.

This brand new guest house offers comfortable, basic, affordable hospitality - everything a visitor could ask for: good food, helpful and friendly staff, advice and assistance with local information; a warm, inviting atmosphere where mingling with interesting guests enhances the experience of visiting rural Tanzania and getting to know the Maasai people. I look forward to return visits for both work and pleasure.
The food is wholesome, tasty and fresh; the entire facility - including bathrooms - is clean and well maintained.
I highly recommend the Tembo Guest House!
