We thoroughly enjoyed our week-long stay at the TEMBO Guesthouse in Longido! When we arrived from Arusha, we were warmly greeted by the staff who immediately made us feel at home. We found the rooms very clean and comfortable, and we enjoyed the convenience of warm showers and Western-style toilets.
The Guesthouse is within easy walking distance of the Maasai community, so there are many opportunities to learn about the Maasai way of life by visiting the market, shops, library, schools and churches. It was enjoyable coming back to the Guesthouse after our day's activities because we were able to refresh ourselves and have a leisurely cup of chai on the patio. This is a great spot for viewing Mount Kilimanjaro at sunrise, doing some quiet reading, or listening to birdsong and the chimes of cow bells as the herds are led home at sunset.
The patio overlooks the garden which produces some of the vegetables for the Guesthouse kitchen. We always looked forward to the satisfying meals, prepared by the chef and served in the inner courtyard. We especially loved the chipsi mayai, chapattis with maple syrup, ndizi, and the African chocolate cake baked in the solar oven.
During our stay, the Guesthouse staff not only took care of our accommodation needs, but also helped us learn about the people and customs of Tanzania. They offered impromptu Swahili lessons and arranged for a guide to take us hiking on Mount Longido. They really helped make our stay in Longido a rich, cultural experience. When it was time to leave, we felt like we were saying good-bye to a new-found family. We would definitely recommend the TEMBO Guesthouse in Longido!
