“A Jewel between Porlock and Minehead - Cross Lane House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

My wife, Alison and I had lunch at Cross Lane with her mum and dad. Her mum has Alzheimer's so we wanted things to go smoothly and they really did. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the food was delicious and very well presented. Everyone in our party had a brilliant time and we immediately booked for another lunch in a fortnight so Alison's sister could come as well.
The vegetarian options on the menu looked great but I went for a tuna carpaccio starter and guinea fowl mains--delicious! We all had a pudding as well and the various sweet wines were excellent accompaniment to my blackcurrant tart, Alison's raspberry panacotta and her dad's gooseberry syllabub. I'm going back so I can try some of the other options as well. The menu changes frequently but, if it's always as good as this, it's well worth a detour to try it. The setting is so lovely too that we are thinking about staying a night or so and doing some walking.

“Didnt live up to my expectations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2014

Good beginning. Pleasant area to sit for pre dinner drinks although welcome was not overly warm.

Dinner was good not great and the water served was luke warm which was unpleasant. Service was adequate.

Chef visited for a chat and to ask about our experience which was welcomed.

Many thanks for visiting us whilst on your trip to England. Delighted that you enjoyed the food. With regard to the other two issues you have raised, I think this needs to be appreciated from a cultural aspect. Many people in the UK do not like iced drinks, therefore water is served ambient in line with this, however, ice is always on request and would have been on the evening of your visit. Again from a cultural element we pride ourselves on delivering quietly relaxed service rather than the 'full on' familiar style of service that is on offer in the USA, this is a very British aspect and needs to be understood in line with the style of service and customs of the host country. We will however make note to offer our valued guests from the USA ice with water in the future. Many thanks for your valued feedback.

“Memorable lunch, divine setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2014

Hugely impressed with an exquisite mother’s day lunch in this charming little restaurant with rooms situated on the edge of the National Trust village of Allerford. The food was wonderful, the seats very comfortable, and the whole experience enhanced by the striking decor which perfectly complements the beautiful old building, parts of which we were told date back to the 15th century.

As always the hosts made the occasion special with graceful service and an exceptionally high standard of food prepared by young chef Garath Pickles who turned what could have been an ordinary roast dinner into something very special. Tenderest of lamb with an apricot and cumin stuffing and roast beef were served with an extensive range of unusual and perfectly cooked roasted vegetables. Throughout the meal, seasoning and flavourings were expertly judged and for the first time ever I found myself enjoying a portion of red cabbage, a vegetable which I normally detest because so full of vinegar. Mum was thrilled with the mother’s day message incorporated into the decoration of her panacotta dessert and delighted with the gift of macaroons which she took home with her.

Wonderful - from the pastry based little snacks offered with the aperitif in the comfort of arm chairs and sofas at the start of the visit, to the after-dinner coffee and home made treats at the end. Helpings were generous and the puddings sumptuous. This place just gets better and better; would very highly recommend a visit.

“Wonderful experience”

A warm welcome, wonderful food and a relaxing atmosphere in a house built in 1492. Log burner glowing, friendly staff, good ale and little touches that made it a special evening.
