“Hospitable, elegant, good food.”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

A beautiful house with amazing views from our room, from our private verandah, from the wrap-around shared verandah, and from the large dining room and guest common-room. The bathroom arrangements are variable -- our ensuite had a shower and toilet with a washbasin in the bedroom, and some private bathrooms are in a shared corridor. BUT DON'T LET THIS PUT YOU OFF. This is an outstanding B&B, made so by the building alone, but also by Jeannette's food, her knowledge, and her genuine warmth. Her tourist advice is spot on. As are her mince pies and fruit compote. It's not just bed and breakfast -- it's bed, breakfast and quite a few snacks.

We booked two nights at Mangawhai Lodge via their website. When we arrived it was all we wanted: Private, cosy, personal, yet not intrusive. Jeanette managed to keep the traditional feel of the lovely house. When she pottered away in the kitchen - creating all sorts of delicious scents - we were already looking forward for breakfast the next day, and it was as plentiful and yummy as expected. When booking through a website I would normally expect to be a little disappointed with what the place actually turns out to be on arrival. Mangawhai Lodge made us feel more welcome and exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: Try and book 'Par 3' - that's the room with the ensuite.

I just travelled 10 nights around the northern part of the nth island and had a ball. The standard of B&Bs in this region are exceptional. This place is in the same class. Stunning outlook over the Mangawhai heads with the ocean in the background. The common areas are big. With balcony's running around the house, there are a number of areas to get away and share a quiet moment with the person you are travelling with.
The hospitality and quality of service is high. The b'fast was great (no lunch needed).
Well done

Room Tip: I booked the ensuite room. The bathroom is small however it is in your room. The other rooms have ba...

I've never really been a big B&B fan but Jeanette has won me over. Her naturally friendly hospitality is the icing on the cake to the stunning views and well appointed rooms. She makes you feel so welcome and relaxed that it feels like you're in your own home. She's also a wealth of information on what to do in the area, and her breakfasts are fabulous-homemade preserves & yoghurts, homemade stewed fruit with fresh juice, or a delicious full breakfast or french toast-superb! And if you're lucky enough to be treated to her banana muffins straight from the oven then you're in for a treat. We'll definitely return, thanks Jeanette for making our stay so wonderful!

We stayed our 2nd night in NZ at the Mangawhai Lodge and were the only guests so we could select a room for ourselves.
Jeannette is a great host and she gave us a lot of information about the area and our next days trip. Thanks again for the warm welcome.
Her place is sitting on a hill with a nice view of the beach. The rooms we stayed in was cosy and in the morning we got a great breakfast with fresh fruit and home made yogurt.

We booked for two nights and were upgraded to the 2 bed room suite.
There is the most amazing decks and views. Jeanette who was our host did a great job and looked after every enquiry.
A genuine 10 minutes walk to Wood Street and cafe's.
Can recommend to all travellers.

We spent 2 nights at Mangawhai Lodge during our 2 week driving tour of the North Island of NZ. We stayed at half a dozen high end B&Bs during our trip. All were excellent and rated at 5 stars, including Mangawhai Lodge. We stayed in the Deluxe Suite. The house and facilities are excellent; the Deluxe Suite is beautifully fitted out and spotlessly clean; the location is excellent for exploration of the east coast area between Auckland and the Bay of Islands (the Mangawhai Cliffs Walk is great); and the view over the beach is fantastic. Our host, Jeanette, was wonderful. She provided us with lots of helpful advice about the area. Breakfast was excellent. Our stay at Mangawhai Lodge was most enjoyable.
