“Stunning Bed and Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

This is possibly one of the most beautiful hotels in the whole of Spain. From the moment we entered through the electronic gates we were mesmerised. The sound of rushing water surrounds the hotel and the gardens are sublime. The conversion of the mill has been done with style and the level of comfort is incredible. Best breakfast we had on our 10 day tour of the region with homemade quince and cakes the highlight. Although it does not have a proper restaurant as such the staff prepared a great dinner for us which included flaming chorizo bought to the table. Torre do Rio is a work in progress and with other buildings set for renovation I can only predict great things in the future for the hard working owner and his staff.

Start with a picturesque river that bounds down rapids 270 degrees around the property. Add a rustic stone building overlooking a 150-year-old ruin of a textile mill, gorgeous fruit trees, manicured gardens and lawns. Sprinkle in fancy linens, fine furniture, perfumed towels, olive oil soap, doilies, potpourri, huge vases full of (mostly silk) flowers and sentimental music piped throughout the lobby. Breakfasts are sumptuous, and the local albarino wine is sublime.

A hotel like this would cost at least $250/night anywhere else, even with its modest dinner selections and out-of-the-way location. It thoroughly exceeded my expectations. However, there are still things that I would change - I'd toss out the overbearing potpourri, get a CD changer so I didn't hear Pachelbel's Canon seven times during my visit and dial back on the floral displays. It still deserves a five-star rating.

Room Tip: I didn't try out multiple rooms, but it's hard to imagine that there's a bad room in thi...

Absolute perfect location, really beautiful decorated interior, very friendly staff are just a few words of our experience in Torre do Rio. This B&B is located in a completely renovated watermill near a small river with a beautiful lush garden with flowers and lots of fruit trees. Breakfast is served in a very nice room and is very good with fresh fruits, juice, fresh coffee or tea, home baked sweet pastries, cheese, jamon serrano, fresh bread etc. etc. Rooms are decorated with style... A real A++ experience which I can recommend!

A stunning converted 19th Century mill building with beatifully landscaped grounds bordered by the river. This is a wonderful place to relax and explore the Galician countryside. Staff are friendly and attentive, the hotel is impeccably furnished throughout and the views from whichever room you stay in will be stunning. Highly recommended, a real treat.

We stayed here whilst walking the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. Beautifully restored mill and grounds. The attention to detail was incredible - from the quality toiletries to fresh flowers, and even candles lighting the stairs at night. We were served by three staff - afternoon tea, dinner on the terrace and breakfast. They were all so nice and we felt very well looked after. We also loved the three mischievous kittens who followed us all around the garden! Definitely our favourite place to stay on this holiday and we'd love to spend more time there.

My wife and I stayed here last month. Though I've experienced a truly wide variety of both hotels and individually run establishments around the western world, Torre do Rio is likely the one which has been put together with the greatest level of attention to detail. From the way wiring and fixtures have been architectured into the stone and wood work, to the exquisite monogramming on every bit of linen you are bound to touch in your room. Nothing has been undertaken on this property without the greatest level of thought and consideration.
Torre do Rio is not easy to find, especially if relying on Google, which has at least one version of the establishment labeled in the wrong place. However, upon approach over the old Roman bridge, through the electric gate to the spacious and tree lined parking area, first appearances are of a well maintained and appointed home. Through the outdoor living space and down the hill into the house, the gardens are exquisitely maintained. The property is in a unique setting, surrounded 180 degrees by the river, as though the property was beautiful enough to embrace. A walk of the expanse of the gardens reveals ruins, a bridge over the river, magnolias, palms, lemon trees, orange and even ugly fruit trees.

Book a stay at Torre do Rio, you won't regret it.

Room Tip: We had a 3rd floor room with a seating area overlooking the gardens, I recommend it.

Caldas de Reis is a bit out of the way, but only 40 minutes drive from either Santiago or lovely beaches. Local food - mainly fish and seafood is exceptionally fresh and well prepared and local Albarino superb. The Inn is in a lovingly restored stone building (a former paper mill) beside a river with ample landscaped grounds to wander and hang out in. No pool, though. House made breakfast is wonderful - you could easily skip lunch after having it!
