My Husband and I spent 4 days at the Baviaans Lodge in March 2013. For those that need to get away from the rat race, whis is just the place to be, absolute peace and tranquility, no electricity, no television. Beautiful location, lovely chalets, very enjoyable meals, amazing hikes in the pristine kloof with a beautiful rock pool to cool off in. Thank you to Rob, our host for taking us to see the Bushman paintings.
It is preferable to have a 4x4, as there are lovely tracks for 4x4 enthusiasts, if you are needing to get from Baviaans Lodge to the Baviaanskloof (30km) you will definately need a 4x4.
If we lived in the Eastern Cape, this would be a regular weekend get away, to Chill and get back to nature. Thank you Rob for a very relaxing break.

I have stayed at the Baviaans Lodge twice recently, first as a cycle tourist in the campsite and then with my wife in full dinner bed and breakfast accommodation in a chalet.

The Baviaans Lodge (at -33.76915 24.09880 and not to be confused with the Baviaanskloof Lodge at Cambria) is at the end of a very scenic road that is negotiable in a saloon car in dry weather but you would be better off driving there in a vehicle with good ground clearance. It is very isolated and correctly described as a retreat. For mountain bikers and 4X4 enthusiasts a unique attribute is that it is located at the south end of the only viable track (as far as I know) linking the Baviaanskloof with the R 62 near Kareedow, anywhere between Uniondale in the west and Patensie in the east. This 30 km track goes over the Kouga Mountains to Rust en Vrede near Studtis and is eminently suitable for hiking, biking or 4X4 driving, in whole or in part.

The campsite is basic but comfortable and is situated in riverine forest next to a stream that runs out of a pristine kloof. Each stand has a tap and a roofed shelter with a concrete floor. There are (cold) showers and communal flush loos.

The lodge and chalets are soundly built, very comfortable and very picturesque. Facilities for self-catering were being constructed when I was last there. Each chalet is well equipped, tastefully decorated and contains a flush loo and gas geyser that works.

Rob le Roux has built up this lodge himself in a way that reflects his passion for conservation and for impacting as little as possible on the natural fauna and flora. Rob himself is multi-talented, well-travelled and very interesting to talk to. On the first day my wife and I were there we saw he was equally at home building a new chalet or producing a superb cheese soufflé starter from the kitchen. The rest of the courses were good too.

At the moment activities are very much up to the visitor. You can either just “chill” at the lodge or campsite, or hike or bike in the surrounding mountains. Taking a Google Earth printout of the area would be a good idea. There is a rock pool in the kloof for swimming, and if you negotiate past it, using the ropes provided to climb over some rocky bits, you are rewarded by an extensive valley to explore that has had relatively few visitors.

Elsewhere there are rock paintings in Bushman sites of significance and pools in the nearby Kouga River that are very seldom fished.

I would recommend the Baviaans Lodge to those who want a quiet and secluded destination, who don’t want to feel like “just another tourist” and are prepared to make their own activities happen.
