“Wonderful Holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2013

Just arrived back this morning from 8 days at The Sanctuary, Rarotonga and miss it already. Personally thought having reception at the bar in the restaurant was a fabulous idea. Was handed a fresh fruit juice which was sipped while we signed in. This less formal method was totally in keeping with being on a tropical island. Staff members were always helpful, friendly and smiling. By day two Leilani who works in the restaurant and reception knew our names and what drinks we preferred. She and the rest of the staff always took the time to stop and chat for a couple of minutes each time we met and were always helpful when we had a query. Waking up in the morning to the crash of waves on the reef and stepping out of the room to a view of palm trees and ocean was just magic. The service wasn't always perfect and had to chase after the room service person a couple of times and ask for supplies that she had forgotten to leave in the room but my polite requests were always met with an apology and a smile. If you want a holiday where life is slower and time is not of the essence, people friendly and staff helpful and smiling then The Sanctuary is the place to stay. It is not perfect but it is certainly worth it.

Room Tip: Room not to close to the restaurant.

We just had our wedding at the Rarotongan Beach Resort and stayed in the Sanctuary, some guests with families stayed in the Rarotongan. I must admit after reading some of the mostly negative reviews about these resorts on tripadvisor and having never actually been there before I was a little worried. However we had an absolutely fab time and the resort could not of been any better. The Sanctuary was great, the rooms were serviced daily and it had a fantastic swim up bar and restaurant. The rooms were of average size, but had everything you needed and were clean and modern with a huge bed. A couple of people stayed in the Deluxe Beach Front Rooms at the Rarotongan, these were modern, and a bit bigger than the Sanctuary Rooms you also had a private courtyard out the front of these rooms. The snorkelling out the beach was incredible, definitely the best spot on the island to snorkel and there was a lot of activites available such as paddleboarding and kayaking. I am so glad we decided to have our wedding here as it catered to everyones needs, to the guests with families, to the young party animals. The bar staff were fantastic and friendly, a little slow at times but this is what you expect when you come to an island. I found all staff incredibly helpful. We had our wedding there and everything was organised perfectly and went off without a glitch. Our wedding party was quite large and Adele made sure everyone was happy with there rooms and organised for a few people that weren't happy to change. The food at the wedding was buffet and was really good.

Thank you for your kind words about your recent stay at Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach and The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

We are thrilled that you found our resorts absolutely fabulous. We are very happy that you enjoyed the fantastic location of the Resort and are delighted that you enjoyed the stunning location and amenities offered in your Beachfront Suite during your stay. Sanctuary Rarotonga takes great pride in its incredible location with a traditional marine reserve at its doorstep.

Your kind comments regarding Adele, our Wedding Planner have been passed on to her and she is very happy that she was able to help make your wedding day the special event it was.

It’s also great that you found the family facilities available at the resort accommodated your needs. At The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa we offer several facilities to cater for our young guests including:
• Banana Beach Playland Crèche (0-3yr olds)
• Little Dolphin’s Waterpark
• Moko’s Kids Club (4 – 11yr olds)
• Teen Zone

Our resorts are particularly well suited to wedding groups as families are able to stay with us at The Rarotongan while adults and couples can stay with us just next door at our adults only boutique resort, Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach (for guests 16yrs and older).

The Resort offers a wide range of exciting recreational, sporting and cultural activities, many focused on the lagoon itself which is a marine sanctuary (ra’ui), declared by traditional leaders on 1 March 2000 for the conservation of marine life within the zone. Consequently the all tide snorkelling in Aroa Lagoon, a fish breeding area, is exceptional with an amazing variety of fish and the very best available on Rarotonga.

The activities staff are happy to assist with providing beach towels and equipment for Resort activities such as snorkelling masks and flippers, reef shoes (essential if you’re exploring the magnificent marine reserve), kayak paddles, tennis balls & racquets, tennis court bookings, volleyballs, petanque and a wide variety of board games, plus extensive local knowledge.

We are also pleased to hear that you enjoyed the meals and beverages available through our restaurants at the Sanctuary Rarotonga and our sister resort, The Rarotongan as these are very popular.

Thank you once again for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach and The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa for your next tropical island escape – perhaps your first wedding anniversary.

Adults only 4 star resort. From the grumpy old man who said "you can't park there!" to the over the bar check in, staying here was going to be interesting. The resort has been opened 5 years, I would have thought there would be a proper reception sign not a hand made cardboard one. Thanks for room 730, great view through the tree! The bed crackled with the rubber mattress cover... very romantic and sweaty along with the well washed 50/50 sheets. The shower was great.... for one person. The breakfast included was worthy of a 2 star establishment, loved the little touch of the little cereal packets being replenished from a cardboard box. The dirty tablecloths added to the "charm" The non talkative staff, was not a language barrier,,just plain uninterested. . They are not up to the expected standard, nor was the hotel. Look, if you are happy with a 2 star motel, it's fine. It is just not worthy of 4 stars or the price.

Thank you for your review of your recent stay with us at Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach

We appreciate the opportunity respond to the concerns you have raised in regards to your holiday at Sanctuary Rarotonga.

We apologise for the inconvenience you experienced on arrival. We can assure you that this is not the standard greeting.

Our Sanctuary Reception is directly adjacent from the bar and many guests enjoy the relaxed atmosphere this offers. Guests are able to enjoy a refreshing cocktail or beverage while checking in and quite often you will find our guests and staff enjoying a chat throughout the day.

In regards to the Reception sign, we currently have one being produced for our Reception desk at Sanctuary.

We would have been happy to address the issue of the coconut tree obstructing your view to a room with a view to your liking. Set out amidst lush tropical gardens featuring hibiscus, banana and coconut palms. All of the Sanctuary’s forty eight rooms are no higher than two storeys and are set on absolute beachfront, and feature an authentic Pacific aesthetic combined with the charm of Polynesian-style architecture. It’s a perfect destination offering a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere for those seeking the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life :-)

In regards to breakfast, a complimentary Tropical Breakfast Buffet (Continental Breakfast) of a variety of seasonal island fruits, homemade yoghurt, fresh-baked muffins, Danish pastries, croissants, toast, spreads, cereals, tropical juices, tea & coffee, is served for your enjoyment in the Blue Water Grill Restaurant from 7am to 10am daily. You can also select from a variety of cooked and light breakfast options from the Breakfast Menu.

We apologise for the “dirty table cloths” and can assure you that this issue has been addressed with our Food and Beverage Manager to prevent this from happening again.

The Sanctuary has been developed as a separate resort offering a full service boutique beachfront resort tailored for couples without kids. It has met an enthusiastic response from guests including returning guests.

The quality of each guests’ stay is important to us and as such, we have Duty Managers on duty from 7am until 12midnight daily. They can be reached by dialing 0 from one’s room phone or asking for them at Front Desk (their names are posted on the wall at Front Desk), and we would have welcomed the opportunity to address any matters of concern which you experienced during your stay.

Thank you once again for your valued feedback and we hope to be able to welcome you back to Sanctuary Rarotonga in the near future.

We just spent 10 days at Sanctuary Rarotonga and, as they are pretty much the same place, The Rarotongan. Sanctuary's rooms and facilities are good but the food is a bit overpriced for the quality. The Rarotongan is looking a bit tired and the service and value in the restaurant is not too good. All the staff were lovely but the overall impression is that it's understaffed and struggling to survive a bit. Don't be fooled by the advertising that makes it sound like the Rarotongan has multiple restaurants...it doesn't - just one. Same with sanctuary...they have one restaurant only and are still advertising 'The Ginger Garden restaurant which is no longer operating.

Room Tip: We were in room 713 which was perfect...right on the beach and mostly very quiet.

Kia Orana charcaro,

Thank you for your review in regards to your stay with us at Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach. Sanctuary Rarotonga is our newest sister resort and adult’s only boutique resort to The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa.

We are pleased to read that you thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic beachfront location that Sanctuary Rarotonga enjoys. We are indeed located beachfront with it taking only a few steps to have access to our stunning traditional Aroa marine reserve “raui”. Many of our guests spend hours snorkelling amongst the jewel colored marine life including fish, star fish and even recently a juvenile turtle :-)

In terms of the concerns you have raised, we appreciate the opportunity to respond as below.

We are disappointed that you found the Blue Water Grill Restaurant did not meet your expectations. As you can see from previous reviews, many guests have found the menu quite satisfying and returned on several occasions throughout their stay to dine with us there. However, if there was a particular experience you were unhappy with, our Duty Manager’s on shift or the Restaurant & Bar Manager would have been very happy to assist you with addressing your concerns.

Guests of our resorts are able to have quick and easy access to a number of Restaurants including:
• Blue Water Grill Restaurant at Sanctuary Rarotonga
• Ginger Garden Asian Restaurant at Sanctuary Rarotonga
• Poolside Pergola at Sanctuary Rarotonga
• TE VAKA Restaurant at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa
• Captain Andy’s Bar & Grill at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa

We do apologise that the Ginger Garden Restaurant was not available at the time of your visit however we are pleased to advise that this is once again opening very shortly.

We appreciate your feedback in regards to the delay in servicing your room during your stay and we are happy to advise that since your stay, our Housekeeping department has actively been trialing a new system which we hope will assist with addressing this issue.

Once again, thank you for your kind feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to stay with us in the very near future.

We have just returned from 5 days at the Sanctuary Resort. We had previously stayed at the Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa next door. The Sanctuary was so much better, all the benefits of staying at the Rarotongan with the great lagoon for snorkelling, kayaking, choice of restaurants and icecream shop and all the buzz of a big resort, then you stepped through the divide between the resorts into the peace and tranquillity of the Sanctuary. The rooms were great, the balcony even better. I read a lot of comments about the resort on trip advisor and was wondering about my choice of accommodation - but it was perfect, no complaints at all. The breakfast was great, cereals and fresh fruit with a few baked goodies each day.
The meals were great at the Rarotongan and although there was a wait at busy times with the kitchen servicing all restaurants it was fun watching the chefs busy cooking in the open kitchen and flying the orders out.
We really enjoyed out stay and have decided already to go back at the same time next year, perhaps for longer than 5 days this time.

The Sanctuary resort met all our expectations for a peaceful break away. The staff were very friendly, and hard-working especially Leilani and Ratu who were very welcoming. The rooms are very tidy and quiet, with lovely views. We did have to ask for linen changes and a proper bathroom clean after a few days, but nothing was a problem to be done. The breakfast was a little disappointing and basic, but other meals were all very high quality. The resort is possibly a little understaffed as meals did take a long time to come, but we got used to ordering in advance of when we wanted them. Prices were better than we expected.
The beach and facilities were excellent, the layout is very well planned with the pool in a sheltered location we could sit by when the beach was too windy. Upon returning home we found we'd been charged twice for airport transfers (we'd pre-paid and then charged again upon checkout) - but after following up we were promptly given a refund on this.
Overall we would definitely recommend the Sanctuary for those looking for a beautiful location to relax in.

You have a great staff who should be appreciated for their hard work and hospitality. Everyday Leilani greeted us with a huge smile and nothing was ever a problem. The food, the drinks and hospitality are at the top of our list. We had the most fantastic time thanks to you and your beautiful resort. We can't wait to book our next trip to come and stay again.
