We stayed for 8 days over Christmas. Bungalow right on the beach and was probably the premier location on Raratonga. Fantastic beach and snorkelling right at your back door. Not the best appointed resort but just perfect in so many ways. Easy, simple relaxing living. Hibiscus Restaurant on site, with pool and best of all scooters to hire and see the entire island cheaply and with great fun!!!!!
Soooooooooo relaxing and in an idyllic location.

Room Tip: Take a beachside bungalow if available, just beautiful, If not the other huts and bungalows are a s...

Palm Grove is like a holiday home rental except someone else makes the bed and gives you clean towels every day! It is by no means a luxury resort but that makes it super relaxing. No need to worry about sandy feet in the room, dressing up or putting cups down on the furniture.
Just fling on your cossie in the morning-walk off your verandah and snorkel all day.Saw at least 30 different kinds of fish and never had to worry about stingers, cold, or being over my head, the stunningly beautiful lagoon goes for at least 500 meters out to the reef where you can see the waves breaking.
After fun in the sun you just throw on a cover-up and walk across to the Yellow
Hibiscus for great food. We ate at some of the recommended top restaurants like Vaima, Flame Tree and Trader Jacks and I think the Yellow Hibiscus' food is better than most. Best ika mata of the five we tried and the yummiest ice-cream ever!
All the staff are casual and friendly and you feel right at home. Nice little kitchen in the unit to keep your cheese and crackers to have with your wine when sitting on your private verandah, listening to waves crashing on the reef while looking up at the millions of stars. Only place we've seen more is in the Australian outback. Not much else to do after 9 at night so you get lots of sleep. Makes for a very healthy holiday, snorkel all day, sleep 10 hours a night, eat healthy food like marinated raw fish (ika mata) and lots of coconut. Go home feeling great!
If you're looking for high-class luxury or wild night life, this is not your place but if like us you wan't a relaxing break Palm Grove is sheer heaven.
There is not a lot to do and we felt a week was just enough. Saturday markets were great for local food and bargains in wood carvings and pareu. The singing at Church on Sunday was wonderful - the whole service takes you back 50 years. Cross island trek an interesting experience although Wigmore's Waterfall hasn't got much water but has got lots of mozzies.
The Highland Cultural night is worth the cost and a trip to the small town of Avarua by car, bus or scooter is good for shopping.
All in all a great holiday!

Room Tip: All the beach villas are great. We stayed in B4.

We stayed a week at the beach villa with more family, 9 in total. The house is perfectly located to a stunning beach and just a boardwalk from the Yellow Hibiscus restaurant. We also used the pool everyday and hired scooters there - no need to bus into town to a rental shop. Loved it, we'll be back.

We stayed 7 nights in a beachfront bungalow. OMG totally stunning scenery. We checked out nearly every resort on rarotonga and although Palm Grove was simpler than some, it was set in one of the best locations and had a real welcoming and comfortable feel. The rooms were cleaned daily, the air con was great and they were clean and modern. Ours opened up to the most stunning beach and palm trees. We snorkels all over the island too. This is one of the best beaches to snorkel. You will not be disappointed at this place.

To Betsy & your staff - Stayed 11-21 Feb 2013, what I can say is this, thank you so much for an awesome stay. A relaxed atmosphere, accomodation with the pool literally outside our door,(which we utilised nearly everyday) and a fantastic view of the mountains when we opened our kitchen window. The locals (being four legged kind, feathered kind or the meow kind) they added colour to the place, even the rooster at times needed more choke to get himeself going in the morning. The views at the beach was fantastic, the grounds were tidy & your staff always had a smile and a greeting. To your driver (Nga) when ever he was around always had a tale or two to tell (What a character this guy is, always a laugh with him.). To your kitchen & bar staff (especially Mata) she was just fantatic the whole time, ensuring the the needs of eveyone was taken care of. Happy hour on Friday nights is a really relaxed meet & greet all the other guest atmosphere, I really enjoyed not having to move as the ladies kept topping up your drinks as the moved in between guest.(Cheers!). Sunday BBQ's, if you decide to stay or book for this on a Sunday, you have 2 choices, steak or fish. Beware if you order steak, I'm surprised there is no health warning for the size they serve, I believe that 500 grams of steak is more than ample for 1, let alone my wife, who struggled to eat her steak, so I ate 1/2 of her steak so I had about 750 grams almost a kilo of steak.( In my eyes, that is a side of beef). I could go on and on, but, there is no need. I would just like to reiterate once more thank you Betsy, Nga and especially Mata and the staff in the bar & kitchen who were absolutely fantastic. What I can say about Palm Grove is............AWESOME - a fantastic bunch of people you have there Betsy, I take my hat off to you and your staff. Guest @ G6

Stayed at the Palm Grove Jan 21 to 30. Very relaxed atmosphere, our garden accommodations were very nice, across from the pool. The small pool requires updating but was very refreshing on hot days. The Yellow Hibiscus restaurant serves good food, just not a lot of variety on the menu. Wigmore's store just 10 minutes walk down the road is handy for groceries, fruit, bottled water, and spirits. Free continental breakfast (8 to 10 am) was always good, with an assortment of fruit, cereals, juice, toast and coffee/tea. It always filled us till dinner which opens at 6 pm.
Most of the staff at the resort are friendly and helpful. The roosters need new watches, as they start crowing sometimes as early as 3 am, not waiting till 6 am sunup. It's very handy and inexpensive to rent scooters at the resort, they are very handy to get around the island, especially on the back roads if you want to miss the traffic. The grounds are well kept. We did find a lot of mosquitoes since it was quite rainy during our stay, and even with bug dope, we didn't last long outside after dark. The area right behind the garden bungalows is a low wet area and was a good breeding ground for the mosquitoes.
The beach was excellent and clean, the water very clear and warm. Snorkeling at the beach was good, not a lot of fish but a good variety and the free kayaks made for an enjoyable time on the water. The views of the mountainous interior of the island are very nice from out kayaking on the lagoon. You can always hear the waves of the surf about 1/2 mile out from shore, but it makes for a peaceful time by the water.

Kia Orana marpenn,

Thank you so much for your lovely review of Palm Grove! I wanted to let you and other readers know that our existing swimming pool is being completely redone in April. We are removing the entire pool, patio area, and covering, and rebuilding from scratch. The existing pool is 24sqm and the new pool will be 40sqm, so the new pool will not only be more modern but much larger as well! We are very excited about this project and are literally counting the days until we begin (currently 20 days to go until 04 April!). During this time we are also gutting the kitchens and bathrooms in all of our Garden Studios and we're already planning a refurb project for our Beachfront Studios in November. If anyone has any questions about our upcoming improvements, please feel free to email me directly at beach@palmgrove.co.ck

Cheers,

We stayed at the Palm Grove in June 2012, so my review comes kind of late. However, looking at the pictures we took, we definitely want to go back. Unfortunately, the Palm Grove was heavily booked at that time, so we could only stay for four nights and moved to the Muri Beachcomber for another three nights.

In terms of the beach, Palm Grove definitely wins. The water is just amazing and you can snorkel right from the beach. We saw an amazing amount of fish and it was so easily accessible. Of course, this was not the best snorkelling we ever had (which was on Lady Elliott Island, Australia) but it's so nice to just walk into the water and see the fish right there, They also have kayaks which we used quite a lot. Apart from that, the beach is just perfect.

The accommodation at Palm Grove is more basic. Don't expect luxury but everything is fine. I would definitely recommend one of the beach bungalows.

The location of Palm Grove is good. Very quiet but close to everything. There is a supermarket close by and you can eat well at the Vaima restaurant just a few meters down the road. We also had dinner once at the Yellow Hibiscus which was good. There is of course more "infrastructure" in Muri in terms of restaurants etc. But Muri is not far if you have a scooter (which we would recommend to rent).

We also did a day tour to Aitutaki that probably everybody does (unless you decide to stay there and spend a somewhat bigger amount of money). The tour is fun and definitely worth it. Here you can find the perfect beach on One Foot Island where they take you to. Don't forget your passport to get it stamped there. Moreover, we went to one of these Highland Paradise Island Nights. We didn't pay for the tickets but got them from other guests who couldn't make it. It's nice but not overwhelming. If you like this kind of shows it can be fun. You also learn something about the history of the place (which is really nicely located up in the mountains). The food is ok too.

So, don't hesitate to book the Palm Grove. Given the price, this is probably the best you can get. Ah, and don't forget the ear plugs unless you would like to wake up at cock-crow (which is a problem everywhere on Raro, but you get used to it...).

Room Tip: Definitely try to get a beach bungalow!
