“Home away from Home”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

My wife and i, retired but still consider ourselves active, have just returned from a delightful two and a half weeks stay at Palm Grove, marking our third stay with these gracious, friendly folk. From Betsy and Joanne in the office, Nga (Mr. Fixit), Mata in the restaurant and ALL the staff, it would be impossible to be hosted by more obliging people, whose one goal is your enjoyment. The location is the most perfect imaginable on this beautiful island, as it straddles the beach and small road circling Rarotonga. For those in the beachfront bungalows, you can touch the sand from your private sundeck; kayaks and snorkelling gear are provided at no cost, and lounge chairs are available for sunning or reading under the shelter of the palm trees. The lagoon is idyllic with many beautiful fish around the coral heads, and poor swimmers like myself need have no worries about getting out of their depth. There is a small swimming pool - perfect for the kids, too.
The Yellow Hibiscus Restaurant on site is great for lunch or dinner, and of course, breakfast is free to guests. More up-market, and just along the road is Vaimea Restaurant, one of the best on the Island; while for those, like us who also enjoy preparing some meals ourselves, Wigmores` locally owned and well-stocked supermarket is less than 200 yards away. Palm Grove accommodations all have kitchenettes. Not be missed is Friday happy hour `on the house`, or the Sunday b.b.q. both with live music. There is a Takeaway adjoining Wigmores for fish and chips, cooked chicken etc.
Getting around is easy: use the local buses every thirty minutes either clockwise or the other way round, rent bikes, scooter or car. We love to walk the backroad where many of the locals live and tend their taro plots and other produce. Walking the beach is pure heaven in either direction - hardly a soul in sight, no crowds around! The main village and capital, Avarua is minutes away, near the airport and harbour, shops and other attractions.
I am going to stop now because we do not wish to make Palm Grove so popular that bookings are harder to come by. If seeking more adventure than pure relaxation, Rarotonga offers plenty such as big game fishing, glass bottom tours, scuba diving, cultural events etc. But one word of warning: if crowing roosters prevent you sleeping, either reserve a Palm Grove beachfront bungalow or bring earplugs.

Stayed here on homeward leg of round the world trip on a recommendation from a workmate. All he told me about the island was correct and this hotel was very typical and good. We had a one bedroom situated across the road from the beach overlooking the pool. Whilst it would have been good to have one on the beach it did not spoil the stay whatever. Breakfast was included and was adequate and refreshed as required. Restaurant in the evening was very good. Friday night has a happy hour where certain drinks are free. There is also entertainment. All in all a great chilling place, would not hesitate to return.

If you want to think you died and went to heaven, then you should be booking a vacation to the Palm Grove! We have been there 3 times and will be going as many times as we can save the money to do so! We have stayed in the villas and the beach bunglows, both are good but opt for the beach villas if you can. You can sit on your deck with a light breeze blowing for comfort and the most pristine white beach with the most beautiful lagoon looking back at you! The snorkling is the best on the whole island, with uncrowed beach. The staff is the most friendly in the whole island, and the managers are the Best!! They have a free happy hour every friday night with local talent which is not to be missed. I can't say enought about the Palm grove. I almost hate to give it a review as I don't want it to become over run with tons of people as it is now a secret place by the ones who have had the luck to find this piece of heaven,

Room Tip: All are great, but I prefer the beach bunglows!

My family and I stayed in the 3 bedroom house at the Palm Grove for 5 nights early December 2012. We had a wonderful laidback holiday - the house was located just at the side of the restaurant and reception area but it was completely private and felt like our personal island haven The house was truly a home away from home with very comfortable beds, airconditioning for the hot nights and a newly renovated bathroom. The kitchen though not new was fully equipped with all we needed and the sitting and dining areas were more than adequate for our family of four. The staff were very friendly and helpful and attended to any maintenance jobs right away. We did appreciate the installation of new fans in the lounge. The rooms were serviced everyday and we enjoyed the complimentary use of the kayaks, snorkel equipment, beach towels and sunloungers. The beautiful beach was just across the road and was as private a beach as we could wish for. The bus service was right outside and most convenient as was the shop only a short walk away. The only downside (if any !) was the rooster who woke us up each morning and the traffic noise which was surprisingly loud. Still one of the best holidays we have had. Only wish we could have stayed a bit longer. Thank you to everyone.

Room Tip: If you are going as a family group this house if perfect if you value your privacy and personal spac...

Me and my friends stayed in the plam grove villa right on the beach front for 7 nights, it was amazing, best time of my life. Just a few steps from our villa was the best beach on the island, we went on the glass bottom boat, but saw more fish right outside plam grove. the staff were helpful and nice, they told us the best trips to take and booked them for us. Friday night is HAPPY HOUR at plam grove, free beer, wine and soft drinks, with everything else half price, $2.50 vodka I this yes. when I go back to raro I am going to stay at Plam grove agian loved my time there. P.S. hope you like cats and dogs, cos theres heaps wondering around.

Stayed 10 nights and had a great time. Staff all great, very friendly and always ready to help.
TV reception was not good in our room and was never remedied, this was only an issue during the All Blacks game. Room B11 is one of the older rooms and is a little worn, switches on the stove broken, freezer needed cleaning out, drapes needed rehanging, door has numerous holes and is in need of replacing but the bathroom is good and the bed is fantastic it has to be the best bed bar none that I have ever slept in. The other beach side Villas looked to be a lot better then the older blue ones and the garden villas all looked to be in good condition. Best beach in Rarotonga and we spent hours soaking in the lagoon. Pool looked good but on the small side but with a beach right outside the door we did not bother with the pool.
Breakfast was always good and plentiful.

capt Tamas lagoon cruise is a must
We will be back

Room Tip: Beach side is great though room B11 is a little worn

My girlfriend and I stayed here from from 17 November - 23 November and definately recommend it to any one looking for a place to stay in Rarotonga. The Yellow Hibiscus Restuarant here has yummy food at reasonable prices and the bSunday night BBQ was just the best. Choice of fish or steak and the steaks were a good size. The salad bar you help yourself to for the BBQ was well stocked with many choices. The breakfasts every morning were nice, basic but sufficient, good choices. We stayed in a one bedroom superior garden bungalow and am so pleased we chose this. They are much more roomer and modern than the others, if you want something quieter choose a 1 bedroom superior. close to the pool but far enough away so it's quiet. We had G11, the beds were very comfortable. The sea is just across the road so it was no problem to walk 90 seconds and be in the sea. The pool area was nice, lots of drinkies with people we meet staying here, such a friendly place. Pool a bit small and needed repairs, broken tiles etc however I understand a new pool is being built in April 2013, will look forward to that when i stay here again. The house cats and strays are lovely, the roosters crowed so bring your ear plugs but if you're used to crowing roosters then they won't be a problem and they weren't too bad. The beach itself was the best, better than Muri Beach, plenty of fish to see whilst snorkelling off the beach, great for kayaking, so safe. You can catch the bus for $7 return into town, doesn't take long, Wigmores superstore is within a 5 minute walk from Palm Grove and has most things one would need, though we never cooked, the place is cheap enough to eat at every night and we went other places to eat. Highly recommend lunch on the beach under a marquee at Pacific Resort Rarotonga, catch the bus from Palm Grove and get off at Muri Beach, walk down along the sand to Pacific Resort, (2 mins) and have lunch under the marquee, lots of choices and great prices, bring your togs and swim in the lagoon. Finally I recommend this place for couples or families.

Room Tip: Choose a 1 bdrm Garden Superior - G11 quieter
