“Amazing hotel!!! 5 stars”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

Vidago Palace is one of the best hotels I ever stayed in. Located in an amazing Palace, Vidago Hotel is the perfect place to spend a few days with a family or as a couple.
The hotel is surrounded by amazing gardens that extend for miles. You can walk up the mountain or just use the available bicycles. In the garden you also find a golf court.
The hotel is in a palace and all the style is from that era. Rooms are big, very comfortable and stylish. The hotel also has an interior swimming pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath and an outdoor heated jacuzzi.
Finally, breakfast is very good and dinner is fantastic.
The only thing missing is a fire place, that would be great for the winter days.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Really beautiful luxurious palatial hotel, excellent lush rooms with glorious views with all amenities befitting a 6star hotel, a palace actually, superb breakfast, beautiful breakfast room...... Except ..... and please forgive me, sounds so trivial .....but no coffee/tea stations in the rooms and no real chips with the room service meals and pool meals, crisps..... really?

Driving up to the imposing facade to have your luggage unpacked and car taken off you ,is the start of your experience. Check in by efficient staff, into a well appointed room with views over the valley.
Onto the terrace for drinks, into the spa with an outdoor and indoor heated pool. a jaccuzzi pool and gym.
Tennis or golf on hand and then into dinner for a wonderful meal. What more could you ask for!

Room Tip: A room in the front has wonderful views

Open since 1910 this is a kind of hotel that every seasoned traveler should try, at least once in its life.
At first one is overwhelmed by the sheer size of the facade and the beauty of the gardens, but once inside you really fell you came to a special place full of history and glamour.
The hotel has been completely renovated to its former glory with nice modern touches that never spoil the experience. Rooms have enough space to relax and the bed is top standard. Sleep quality was very good.
I stayed in the lower floor with a small area outside to lie down under the sun. The bathroom was very good with tub and huge shower with all the amenities one should expect.
As for breakfast, besides eating in a marvellous room filled with natural light all the products are of good quality and the choice is plentiful. A real pleasure to look for after a good night sleep.
The park around the hotel is beautiful and very enjoyable to go for a long walk. You can even try the mineral water straight from several springs, as this is a former thermal resort famous for its naturally carbonated waters.
The few minus in this otherwise perfect stay was the restaurant which is famous for the food but for me somewhat a disappointment. Too expensive and not distinctive enough to earn my approval. Although there were a lot of waiters around the dinner went from 8.30 pm to 11.30 pm! So much time to get our food and so little to eat in the end.
The barman at the lounge bar could also learn how to prepare the new gins. He just served it like a normal one which is not acceptable in today's standards.
Overall it was all memorable even more for the children. Fantastic space to ride a bike (available) as well as indoors and outdoors swimming pool.

Room Tip: I recommend the rooms on the ground floor (5,6,7,8) with direct exit to the garden.

I've stayed in more expensive hotels but this is the best hotel I have ever stayed in!

The hotel is beautiful Belle Epoque. The rooms are modern with deep marble tubs and rain showers and french doors in the bathrooms. There's a tasteful collection of books to read in the room and throughout the hotel.

We had dinner two nights in the grand dining room. The food is delicious and plentiful. The staff is attentive but not intrusive. If you're a wine-lover, talk to the Sommelier (Vitor) who is a native of the Douro region and really knows his wines. The local Tras-Os-Montes wines should not be overlooked.

The breakfast is generous and also is open for 4 hours. You really don't need to eat much more during the day. We enjoyed walking on the grounds (they own the hill behind the hotel) and lounging at the bar and relaxing in the sauna and the spa. Our stay was perfect.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front of the hotel get sun in the morning.

Friendly and attentive staff. Great Spa facilities with 2 outdoor pools and an rather dark indoor pool. Spa treatments were average for the price. Breakfast very good. Room service and lunch menu pretty average, pasta dishes tasted more like a ready meal.

VIDAGO PALACE (north Of Porto - Portugal)
Stayed here for 3 nights in April 2014.

Flight to Porto from UK only 2hrs 5 mins. Easy! Porto is a neat, kind of small airport and modern. Transfer to Vidago on the motorway was around one hour. The more north you drive it is even greener and you would pass the famous Douro Valley on the way, although you would have to take the correct exit road off the motorway of course.

Vidago Palace is a quintessential hotel with great history with just 70 rooms + suites. It actually opened in 1910, ALTHOUGH it was "re-born" in 2010 being totally re-modelled yest preserving the architectural heritage of the buildings, by the owners (Superbock beer people), The thermal Spa has 20 treatment rooms, with an excellent golf course in beautiful surroundings and up to 6 restaurants and bars.

It is such a peaceful setting/location and you really feel you are "away from everything". Relax! Ah!

Dinner on the first night was in the fantastic Noble Hall (the Ball Room).
Food was amazing and the wine list including the best Portugese wines was extensive and for all pockets. Highly recommended for a special occasion or just a wonderful relaxing evening with your loved one(s).

Breakfast is a lavish affair in the beautiful Winter Garden. The staff here are so accommodating. They even researched my request for "Porridge" and duly offered this on the second morning. Great customer service!

On the second evening, the Wine Cellar was sampled, as they serve tapas, with top quality wines. A very relaxed and "different" experience than the Ball Room on the first evening.

During the day, there is another quiet and lovely room for drinks and snacks (the Four Seasons Room). Very peaceful! Lunch was taken one day in the Club House, which is used by the golfers. Again really very pleasant and different.

The Thermal Spa adds to the serenity of Vidago Palace. Built on 1-- hectares of perfumed cedars, pines and holly. Inside there is white marble everywhere. It waters, extracted from the granite subsoil and recognised for its therapeutic cures, have been sought after by royalty. Clarins + Aromatherapy Associates provide a ranfe of face and body treatments. Highly recommended.

It is such a peaceful and wonderful location to relax at Vidago Palace and yet you can be in the area of the Douro Valley going south in around 30 minutes. This is a stunning region and a MUST VISIT.

Vidago Palace would make a great base for say 3 or 4 nights, with an 'option' to go back south to Porto for say another 3/4 nights, with the essential addition of a Douro Valley visit. Alternatively, you could drive further north towards the Spanish border some 30 minutes away, for a different "experience".

A beautiful and undiscovered part of Portugal and so much different than the Algarve and even the bustling city of Lisbon.

You have to go! Vidago Palace is a dream location, whether for a quiet stay in peaceful surroundings, or playing a round or tow of golf, maybe spa and certainly fine dining. I am aware of a brilliant package via Golf World UK magazine for 3 or 7 nights including breakfast + green fees (2 or 5) from €297 Euros for 3 nights or or €630 Euros for 7 nights. Although take a look at 'options' booking direct or seeing any "other deals" via the web.

Room Tip: IF you wish to eat out of Vidago palace one night, I would recommend teh nearby Restaurant - QUINTA...
