“Gorgeous spa hotel”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

Excellent hotel - modern, low visual impact, helpful staff and great views over the river douro. Food was very good, and our spa treatments were wonderful. Our room had good views over the river from the room, and especially from the private terrace outside. Only downside is that it is quite hard to get there - local roads are not great and signposting is hit and miss. It is also well away f(1-2 hours drive) from the main wine/port tasting routes of the upper Douro.

The Hotel has a quiet environment, perfect for a get away weekend. Decoration is minimalist but lovely and fits the Douro environment really well. It is possible to walk around the hotel and enjoy the lovely view. The staff was very helpful and nice overall, but some of them poorly trained. Unfortunately none of the spa facilities was free of charge.
Room was rather small but very comfortable, the view was definitely the strongest point about it.
The restaurant was very good, lunch and dinner very well served. There was a live piano concert for guests that I really appreciated. It was a great experience overall, and I would definitely go again.

Beautiful scenery, wonderful locations, just 1.5-2 hours driving from Porto on the hill of low mountains. Rooms wide and well furnished, staff service attentive and qualified, breakfast high quality, WiFi - good. One of the best places for a week relaxation not far from Porto. Highly recommend.

Very nice service and nice overall standard of the facilities. Had a wonderful view from the bed. SPA treatment (massage) was ok. Amazing pool. We came with the train (lovely ride by the river - recommended!) and the staff came to pick us up with a car! Restaurant food was not good - we tried it twice.

This is absolutely the worst stay I've ever had at a hotel. This was the last part of our Honeymoon in Portugal and it was nightmare.

First of all we had a horrible time finding this hotel. We had rented a car (the ONLY way to get there) and got lost a few times. If you're not from the area, the hills of Douro Valley can be very confusing. There is no good signage until you're at the main driveway. Very confusing to get to.

Second - The staff upon our arrival was rude and dismissive.

Third - The dinner we had was atrocious. My husband had to send his pasta back because it was more like a thick soup - swimming in the overly heavy cream sauce. My "veggie" stir-fry was store bought cheap noodles with about 4 pieces of zucchini and gave me a bad stomach ache. My husband's second dish, a pork of some kind was so bad he couldn't finish it and didn't bother ordering another meal. We both went to bed hungry and with upset stomachs. There are NO close dinner options outside of this hotel which made the food that much worse, because we couldn't leave to get anything else.
Breakfast was equally bad with limited selection, stale bread and pastries and little fruit. We were so hungry by the time we finally checked out.

Fourth - The hotel photos on the website look great, but the reality was different. Our room was outdated and dingy. The only redeeming quality was the view from our balcony.
We were scheduled to stay 4 nights but checked out after night 1 and demanded our money back which was given to us. The hotel manager, Patricia, did feel bad which was nice. But that front desk staff was so rude and unhelpful.

Fifth - Perhaps, the worst part of the whole trip was the fact that the hotel was EMPTY. We didn't see anyone else besides a handfull of staff members until the second day when we saw 1 family and 1 other guest. It was so creepy, I felt like we were part of a scary movie.

DO NOT GO HERE. Find another hotel. I hear some of the Qunitas in Douro Valley are quite lovely. Unfortunately, they were booked up before we booked.
For the remainder of our trip we went to Porto and were SO happy we did.

We spent some days in this hotel, during the summer.
The hotel is pleasant our room had a beautiful view, for the Douro Valley, and the swimming pool, even though small for the number of guests, was ok.
The hotel is clean and well maintained and the staff, in general, was nice... Except the restaurante man who was the head waiter! He's very rude!!! He is not nice, doesn't show any kind of availabitily to help the cliente! He seems to be doing us a favor!! Very bad!! He was always trying to rush service for us to quickly finish the meal! He, inclusive, interrupted our toast to take back the dishes!! Awful!! The breakfast was also poor and with tiny options! And this man, again there...being NOT NICE with the guests!! Go away!!! If you stay at this hotel, don't go to this restaurant.. We were there before, hope now this man doesn't work there anymore.
Go dinner in DOC RESTAURANT. It's very good.
Another note to the spa... very very small... the lady of the spa was nice.. but I think that this space can not being called a spa... it's very small and the relaxation zone can not be named like that... because it's not calm, zen or silence. It's very noisy and unpleasant. The hotel management should improve this also.
I think the hotel is nice but there's better acoomodation in Douro Valley.

An excellent location to escape from the hustle and bustle of life. The views of the Douro Valley are fantastic, and the facilities in the hotel enable you to enjoy peace and tranquility. The Spa facilties and restaurant are first class and add to the experience.

A car is vital if you are staying at the hotel as it's in the middle of no where, however, it's definitely worth the effort of finding. The occupancy of the hotel was low during our stay, but we considered this a positive, and we were served a complimentary breakfast in our room each day.

Room Tip: All rooms face the river, but a room in the front block have the best views.
