“Excellent food.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2013

We went here this week, while staying at Strete Barton guesthouse which is next door and wonderful. The food is excellent. Interesting and varied menu, lots of sea food, well presented. service is prompt and pleasant.. We also enjoyed the locally made white wine with our meal. The only thing we felt that detracted slightly is the atmosphere, mainly the brightness of the lighting throughout..it gave it a slightly canteen feel, which the food most certainly isn't!

“Superb!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

We have eaten at the Laughing Monk on several occasions over the past two or three years and the quality of the food continues to delight us.

We were very impressed when a large jug of iced water and some bread was brought to the table almost as soon as we were seated. In most restaurants water is 'conveniently' forgotten unless it is the bottled type, so its unbidden arrival was much appreciated.

The food was beautifully fresh and well-presented. You could just tell that most of it was sourced locally. The seafood dishes were perfectly cooked and we rounded off the meal with a couple of bottles of wine and a fine selection of cheeses.

Hats off to Anna, our waitress, who provided not only a very efficient service, but also a superb sense of humour. She had us in hysterics and really made our evening fun.

We look forward to a return visit when we are next in the area.

“Definitely go there!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

Excellent food, we had the fish tapas as a starter which was amazing- a great mix of scallops, mackerel, crab ...all prepared differently and monk tail as main superbly cooked. With that dart valley white wine...to be honest surprisingly fruity and enjoyable! Very warm welcoming as well.

“Well worth a visit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

We took advantage of the early arrival summer menu (seated between 5pm and 7pm) where starters and puddings were £6 with the main course priced at £12. We found this a great option for us as we much prefer to eat early. The food was well presented and delicious, and we found the staff to be courteous and friendly. We will certainly return to this restaurant when next in Devon.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013

We went to the Laughing Monk on a Monday evening, expecting to be the only ones there, but were nicely surprised to see a good number of people, which always creates a warm atmosphere.
The welcome by the owners wife, was really warm too, this lady worked so hard and nothing was too much trouble.
The food was excellent. All superbly cooked and presented, absolutely delicious. The accolades are so well deserved. Seafood all so fresh.
We asked about the history of the Old School House, and were shown photos and a book with some great photos of the building.
If you are in the area, this restaurant is really worth the trip. We look forward to a return visit.
