I've stayed at the Matahari 3 or 4 times now but unlikely to go back. The bathrooms are in serious need of upgrade and the pushy sell reception of trips and tours when you're checking in at 1am is just irritating. However, the gardens are still immaculate and the layout of the chalet with the outside balcony area is very nice and can't complain about the amenities in the room itself eg tv, fridge, tea & coffee etc.
Main downside is the Matahari's new neighbours - basically it's an events space which seems to be hired out for weddings etc which have VERY lound music and all night long. Even if you've hit the local bars and ready to turn in at 1am ... you'll be kept awake long after (assuming that someone has hired it when you happen to stay).
Foodwise, lunch and dinner was very nice and staff are friendly, breakfast is very uninspiring. I had previously stayed at the Kind Villa Bintang before I tried Matahari and this is where I'm likely to go back to next time.More
