“Wonderful Bali Tropic Resort & Spa”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2009

After reading some of the derogatory reports about this hotel that were posted in September and October this year we felt we had to write and share our experiences of the Bali Tropic Resort and Spa with you all.

We have stayed at this typical Balinese hotel 7 times over the past 11 years, usually for a month each visit, and have never had one bad experience. The architecture and gardens are beautiful and well kept there is even a temple in the grounds which makes a wonderfully romantic backdrop during the evening when the meal is set in the gardens. For an extra special occasion we can highly recommend the special meal on the beach, we had this one year to celebrate our 70th birthdays.

We always find the staff to be extremely helpful and courteous and have never had problems with the senior management. On the contrary the management at this hotel are always willing to listen to anyone who has an idea on improving their stay, for example we asked that a full length mirror would be useful in the bedroom, and a couple of days later one arrived – we always stay in room 2049. On our last visit in November this year the hotel was in the process of installing a safe in each room which had been asked for by another traveller. I myself do not think this is necessary as Bali has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, however, please be careful in Kuta where most of the people you meet are not from Bali and you should take care whilst you are there.

Other staff around the hotel: in the restaurants, in the bars, in the spa, are wonderful and are always genuinely happy to see you and they always go out of their way to make your holiday as relaxing as possible.

The beach at the hotel is quiet and clean. There may be some noise from the water sports but this is a minimal background noise and only at one end of the beach so if this annoys you – go to the other end. There are plenty of sun beds all with thatched sunshades to use. The sea is tidal in Bali and because of this the sea does go out with the tide, but this is a great time to do a bit of beach-combing looking for those wonderful seashell memories. The inevitable seaweed and other debris that is washed in with the tide is cleaned from the sand continually.

The level of hygiene around the hotel is extremely high and we have never suffered with upset tummies because of eating here. We always stay all-inclusive and eat at all the restaurants in the hotel and take advantage of the packed lunches that the hotel provide whenever we have days out on trips around the island. The hotel has 4 bars in total and we have never witnessed the staff re-using the dregs of previous drinks when we have used them and we always have ice in our drinks as the water used to make ice in this hotel has been filtered twice and is completely safe.

I am a vegetarian and now the chef is aware of this fact he goes out of his way to cook special dishes and make me aware if there are any animal products in the other dishes, for example if the soup has been made with animal stock he will make another batch using a vegetable stock.

If you are looking for a holiday along the lines of ‘18-30’ where you can have non-stop drinking games watching sports on large screens in a sports bar then this is not the hotel for you, you need to stay in Kuta where there are countless clubs and bars. However if you are looking for a well-run hotel where you can experience the wonderful peace and ambience of Bali and the gracious hospitality of the people of Bali, then the Bali Tropic is ideal.

We have stayed at some of the best hotels in the world. The Peninsular in Bangkok, the Valley Wing of the Shangri-La in Singapore, the Mandarin Oriental in Singapore, Traders in KL, the Grand Marina in Barcelona to name but a few, and we have never experienced any better service or food as we do at the Bali Tropic.

We stayed at the Bali Tropic for 18 nights (our seventh visit) in September and yet again had a wonderful time. The accommodation is set in beautiful grounds and our deluxe bungalow was superb. The management and staff are professional and so happy - a credit to the hotel. Whilst in the hotel we made the most of the beach in the mornings whilst the tide was up and sunbathed by the lovely butterfly shaped pool in the afternoons. The buffet meals were a pleasant experience at different external locations in the hotel grounds ie. on the beach, in the gardens in front of the beautiful temple, around the pool or in 1 of 2 restaurants. We never experienced any tummy problems. The entertainment was varied and included Traditional balinese dancing, Modern dance show, electronic duo, trio with saxaphone, a quartet and a fashion show. The 24 hour all inclusive package included a variety of drinks including cocktails.Massages in the Tropical Spa were truly relaxing, especially after visits to Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud. All in all, a great holiday and one which we are repeating next September.

Airline: Singapore Airlines - they were brilliant. can't do enough for you, always smiling. plenty of leg room and we are tall! food was tip top and the TV's were grt.

Checking in at hotel: no probs, drink on arrival & very quick and get you to your room in no time.

Hotel room: we were in a deluxe bungalow room which was gorgeous. we loved how spacious it was. Very clean, lovely comfy bed and very pretty carvings including the door. we had flowers and a honeymoon cake in our room on arrival at no extra cost which was a sweet surprize. and they sometimes put flowers on our bed.

pool: really nice with a great swim up bar. no problem getting a sunbed.

Food: we thought the food was very good, quite abit of variety so you could normally find something you liked. In particular we liked the fish and vegetables. My favorite was probably the BBQ nights when they did fish skewers in BBQ sauce, very tasty.

Restaurants: -breakfast was always in the same restaurant on the beach front which is a lovely setting. we tended to just go for toast and cereal but you could get omlettes, full cooked breaky etc. coffee a little stong but no real issues.
- lunch: we only ate lunch a couple of times as we went out on alot of days. it tended to be at the outdoor restaurant on the beach. variety seemed good

- dinner: this was our fave. more often than not plenty of choice with tasty fish, veg, chicken, beef. the only thing we were not keen on were the deserts so we sometimes went to the 24 hr restaurant later for the v.tasty ice-cream. dinner tends to be served in a different place most nights, sometimes on the beach, sometimes by the pool and also in the same place as they serve breaky. we found this a nice change as the atmosphere always felt different.
- 24 hr restaurant: they do some good snakcs like pizza, sandwichs with fries etc but also some really nice dishes cooked to order like thai curry, noodles and spag bol etc. nice for a change from buffet.

Bars: the only bar at night is the lobby bar, very nice and chilled with a cute little band playing some nights or a singer. sometimes abit hot as all open plan but you get used to it. just sit under a fan. you can get a drink at the 24 hr restaurant once this closes at mid-night.

Drinks: as per other complaints they did initally start putting in dregs from the last beer or coke etc. so we just started asking them for 2 fresh beers or cokes etc and this did the trick, no probs at all. and we also sometimes cheekily asked them to tilt the glass when they poured a beer so not to flatten the beer. they did not mind at all as all the staff are so freindly.

Spa: brill and good value for money on the 2 for 1. we had 2 while we were there and enjoyed them alot. again staff are so nice.

Beach: not white sand like on the pictures until you walk up to Nusa Dua. But it is a nice beach and they get rid of a lot of the seaweed. we had no probs swimming at the right handside near the massage hut. there is parasailing and windsurfing which we did and both are good. you can hire jet ski too.

Hotel grounds and hotel in general: very well looked after and beuatiful. everything is carved. very traditional which is what we wanted.

Cleanliness: room was spotless and so was everywhere really. only negative was in our last few days there was sometimes a smell of sewwrage or something like that. i think they must of been having a problem so hopefully this will get sorted soon. it was worse near the entrance.

other stuff: always agree a price with a taxi first. be careful in Kuta at night as we had our camera stolen with honeymoon pics on it, not saying don't go as other than that its a great night out oh and good for surfing. guide was pretty good for Pacific World aka Thomson but their tours are quite pricey. lots of beach touts in Kuta but after you've been on the beach for about 10 mins and keep saying no thank you they do leave you alone. we didn't find it too bad. we've experienced worse beach touts. only 1 member of staff that annoyed us at the hotel as kept pestering us to go with his brother to Jimbaren for a meal, but he got the clue eventually.

things worth seeing/doing: hai tide huts are romantic, monkey forest is fun, tanah lot and cool mountain trip are good to see culture, we also did our own trip with a local taxi to see the surfing beaches Ulawatu, Padang Padang anf Dreamland - this was grt as my hubby loves surfing. Uluwatu is gorgeous and not commercial. Jimbaren beach is worth a visit for a romanic fresh fish meal on the beach, we tried Blue Marlin which was good although abit pricey so maybe try a less commercial one.

Overall we had a great honeymoon in this hotel. It's very very chilled out and hardly any kids which is nice if your on honeymoon. The Bali people can't do enough for you, most of them are so warm and friendly. Some very good people.

lastly very humid in october so just bare that in mind, might be worth checking which is the best month to go. and last but not least put plenty of mosquito spray on as we got bit alot! and they were mega itchy and swelled up alot too.

enjoy! :-)

Fine hotel!!! Remarkable architecture and magnificent design. Each number is unique and has the own name - I had a rest in number "Rambutan". I have been surprised by an abundance of a decor from a carved tree in rooms of the hotel. The abundance of traditional food, the kind, smiling personnel, various entertainments, unforgettable massage directly on an ocean coast was pleasant. From sights has especially amazed the Tanah Lot temple, mysteries, dance of Kichak. The Destiny has presented me an unexpected gift In this place … I necessarily will arrive to this hotel in the end of December, 2009, and I hope that the Destiny will present me It again.

Travelling with a party of 16 for my wedding I had so much to consider when booking -location to the town and sights, quality and price for the guests whilst still getting a beautiful location for the wedding. I needn't have worried the Hotel and the grounds are beautiful, the rooms were gorgeous, clean and spacious and the staff are amazing and totally went out of their way not just for the wedding but throughout the holiday.

When I booked the hotel it was just a 3 star (I have since learnt that it has been upgraded to a 4 star) and I was so worried what the quality of the food on the all inclusive would be like, but the food was fantastic with a really good choice - luckily the pre-wedding diet meant I could indulge!! Also good choice available on drinks on the all inclusive, all our favourite cocktails were included.

The wedding was the best day of my life the hotel has a choice of locations but for us it had to be the beach!! They just put so much effort in for us with the decoration, the food, the cake, flowers, canapes, cocktails etc. They also got us a great hairdresser and organised the balinese dancers for us. We even got a fully staffed bar on the beach!! We think we got a great deal for what we paid.

We used the photographer in the hotel, who on the day had some really good ideas, but he was also happy to take the pictures we wanted and we got a good range of natural shots as well as the posed full party shots - really nice guy to

I saw some reviews about the hotel spa being overpriced and it was compared to what you can get on the beach but they had 2 for 1 offers on which made it pretty reasonable and meant we didnt have to go out of the hotel on the wedding day.

Also same as all hotels the shops inside were pretty expensive compared to outside but we didnt need to use them as there was a small supermarket just outside which sold all the necessities

I would also say that if your a beach person then its not the best I have ever seen but it was clean, they clear the seaweed a couple of times a day so its not bad at all, but I have been to prettier beaches

All in all the whole group was miserable about going home and all have said it was the best wedding and holiday they have ever been on!!

I have some advice for trips, nightlife etc but will add later to resort info

We flew into Bali, via Singapore, and were met on arrival and taken to Bali Tropic. Transfer time was only approx 30 mins (yes you do get occasional aircraft noise at the hotel, which I don't remember being advised about beforehand). Check in was easy - seated in a comfy chair, chilled face cloth, cocktail in hand and paperwork brought to us - not a queue in sight! We were escorted to our room (deluxe) and our cases brought along for us. Iniital impression was that it seemed quite dark, but hey when temperatures are in the 30s you don't really want full sun in your room. The outside of the room was impressive with a fantastic carved wooden door. The inside was also impressive - a good size, we had two twin rooms which opened up into a good sized bathroom which had a large tub and separate shower. There was a large open wall between the bedroom and bathroom - maybe ideal for honeymooners but not ideal for a family group - fortunately there are pull across blinds to save your modesty! The room had TV, minibar/fridge - drinks were very reasonable. The only item we felt was missing was a room safe, however safety deposit boxes were available at Reception. However, crime seems almost non-existent in Bali and we had no concerns at leaving valuables in the room. The hotel was fairly cosmopolitan with a number of guests from Russia, Germany and Czech Rep - we feared a battle of the sunbeds but this never was an issue as there were plenty around the pool and on the beach. There is plenty of naturual tree shade around the pool and the sunbeds on the beach had large thatch sunshades over most. There are 3 restaurants - one for breakfast, one for lunch/dinner and a 24hr (a la carte) restaurant. The food was mostly buffet style, with the exception of the 24hr restaurant which served such things as spaghetti bolognese, toasted sandwiches, burger, pizza, ice cream etc. Unlike some of our fellow countrymen we enjoyed the food. There were a few variations but this was buffet style so it did feel quite 'samey' each day. I've read a few reviews where guests have had stomach bugs - we too were some of the many who seem to be ill - in fact 11 days later I'm still not over it. There is clearly a hygiene problem at the moment - didn't spot this in previous reviews so assume its a recent blight. The staff were very attentive and always gave a smile. There were 3 bars - one near the restaurant, one in reception and a swim-up bar in the pool. There are plenty of watersports available from the hut on the beach - jet skis, parasailing, banana boats, diving etc. The hotel also runs snorkelling trips twice a week by boat. There is an air-con gym if you're feeling athletic or you can have a bike, for free (2hrs), to cycle along the pathway which follows the beach in front of all the hotels. There are 3 pool tables, giant chess, table tennis, darts and boules. There is an internet room with 2 computers but connection was very slow (approx £1 for 15 mins). We saw signs for a kids club but didn't actually see it (or many kids come to think of it)! The hotel has its own spa where you can have a lovely, relaxing massage, reflexology, facial - or the works! They offer a 'Happy Hour' between 9am-1pm where you can have two treatments for the price of one. A Balinese or Aromatherapy massage was $35 - good value if you go in happy hour - you can mix n match so you don't have to have two massages you can have a massage and facial etc. If you fancy a spot of shopping there are a couple of boutique shops under reception but they weren't particularly cheap. There is a shopping centre down the road (about 20 mins walking along the beach). There is an hourly shuttle bus (can be very crowded) or for about £1.50 you can take a taxi (ensure you confirm the price before you get in). At Bali Collection there is a small department store, restaurants, some tourist gift shops and a number of brand stores - Ralph Loren, LaCoste, Billabong etc. There is also a small supermarket over the road from the hotel, which also has free internet access. The grounds of the hotel are well laid out and the gardens are pleasant. The beach isn't your usual white tropical sand and as there is an outer reef the water is shallow for a long way out. Unfortunately there is alot of seaweed so not particularly pleasant. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bali Tropic and despite our all coming down with the stomach bug we would go back again.

Don't dismiss this place based on the previous reviews. We thought the positive aspects overwhelmed the negative ones. It is a very beautiful resort. The grounds are large, lush & beautifully kept. If you walk the beach strip in this area, this place really stands out, (even from the often boringly landscaped lawns of the 5-stars in Nusa Dua). The grounds & rooms are in Balinese style, which from my perspective, is the idea: we are in Bali: The rooms were very nice & there are a couple of large villas that looked stunning even by Bali standards. All the staff were warm & very professional. The pool was beautiful. Yes the beach is not white. It was beautiful though. Swimming there in a warm tropical downpour was very memorable. There is an air conditioned gym at the beach too.

The spa was one of our favorites on our one month trip. Great ambience, massages & treatments. I recommend the Tropical Fruit Spa (something like that) where, after a 60 minute massage & exfoliation, you are slathered with fresh mango yoghurt then rolled up in banana leaves & fabric like a banana. If you go for the 2 for 1 Spa Happy "Hour" from 9 am to 1 pm it is amazingly affordable!

We also thought the food, with the exception of the breakfast buffet, was disappointing & expensive. However there is plenty of wonderful restaurants in the area (don't miss the original Bumbu Bali). You may find a hotel with better food nearby, but you may be giving on ambiance etc.

The entertainment was not our style either, which is often the case with hotel entertainment - but we thought this may reflect more on the guests than the resort! Bali is known for its amazing cultural richness so venture out of your hotel - there is lots around!

Ideally, rent a scooter & explore the surrounding village & area. It is fascinating & beautiful.
