“Very Good For Bali... But...”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

Like other reviewers we checked in with the 8 night Romance Package from Deals. A few minor issues with the check-in and we got to the room. The room was clean and tidy... but, a bit old (but hey it is a beach resort... who stays in their room??).

Used our vouchers on the massages (4 each, 8 in total) and loved every minute of them... nothing to fault although you may want to check what massage is what as some are harder than others and if you are a lightweight on the massage table you may be in for an unpleasant experience.

Big questions as to why the World Cup Final was blocked on the Hotel TV's, reception said it wasn't being broadcast... BUT, I went across the road and sat out the front of the nearest MiniMart with 7 fantastic locals who had a TV set up on a shopping basket wedged in place with a thong and a dodgy antenna... free to air, they gave me the royal treatment with the best seat and great conversation about the game, I shouted them a couple of beers each and we all had a fantastic time, apparently the so called 4 Star Grand Aston wasn't prepared to foot the public screening fee (required by hotels as it is considered a public broadcast)... poor form for a 4 star IMHO!

Tried all of the restaurants using the included vouchers and was glad I wasn't paying for the privilege, they weren't bad - the food was OK and the staff were friendly and attentive... BUT, given the plethora of fantastic restaurants in and around the area that served incredible food at very reasonable prices I personally wouldn't bother, try the Coco Bistro directly across the road or better yet Bumbu (2) to the right and just up the road.

On the whole we really enjoyed our stay and the staff were friendly and attentive, we had a great time and made full use of the shuttle service into Kuta (be on time for the return trip... they can't and don't wait for stragglers). You can do a lot worse than the Grand Aston and for the money you probably won't do a lot better.

Dear Matt G

Many thanks for your very kind comments on your stay here, I am very happy that you and your wife so enjoyed the whole experience of our restaurants, Spa and other hotel facilities.

With regards to the World Cup, although this was freely broadcast to private households, for hotels there was a separate licensing system in place which was extremely expensive. So almost all hotels took the opinion that with the match times all being very late at night or early morning here, that it was best to leave this to the many freestanding restaurants which were not so much affected by this licensing system. Hugely frustrating, and I sincerely hope that for the next World Cup the Indonesian broadcast companies and authorities recognise that this event should be enjoyed by all.

Glad you were none-the-less able to see the match.

Thanks again.

We bought the holiday on line from Deals 12 months ago.
Great Deal, we had free massages 4 each and 4 dinners and free breakfasts all of this with Transfers to and from the Hotel.
The service at the hotel was fantastic as well as having a great ocean view room as well.
All the Dinners we had were three course with really good service. One of the restaurants had traceling singers which made the night a fun one.
The only thing I would say was annoying was that the people who put thier towels out early morning and went out and people thought the sun deck chair where being used, this should be policed more. We really enjoy our stay and the weather couldn't have been better.

Room Tip: Ocean view is the best and if you have any difficulties in stairs book for the ground floor.

We had a special Romance Package for 8 days to celebrate a significant birthday at this Nusa Dua hotel. It was good value and included 8 massages (which were all excellent but book in as soon as you arrive as they get busy) breakfasts, 3 meals in the hotel dining areas and airport transfers. We had some initial issues with our room allocation and moved several times on the first day but staff were very friendly and keen to accommodate us (quiet room with an ocean view, balcony not receiving afternoon sun, comfortable beds). We settled on Room 330 as we felt the afternoon sun on the balcony on the other side of the building became too hot to enjoy being outside (but others might not find this a problem). We also enjoyed the open air wall/ window that had a lovely ocean outlook and provided a welcome fresh sea breeze continually through the corridor at this level. We also had some issues with the hot water not being very hot (no cold water needed in the shower) but again, staff were attentive and followed up the problem - at one stage we had 3 different people in our room at the same time trying to fix the problem! We had some degree of success but decided it was easier just to cope with slightly cooler showers. Our twin room was very spacious (especially the bathroom), with comfortable beds and was well laid out, however, there were many scuffs and marks on the walls and the ceiling had quite a large section of paint peeling near the entry. Not what you would normally expect in a property advertised as 4 star. Breakfast was quite good, and the location and outlook was lovely, however, it did depend on the time you arrived as we found that some items became unavailable later in the morning. There was some construction happening but the noises were not really a problem for us. The pool was large and inviting and we enjoyed our time there, although several other guests from Australia we talked to were saying there was moss growing on many surfaces. We enjoyed our seafood BBQ banquet on the first night but found the meals in the nearby cafes (less than 5 mins walk) over the road and to the left or right of the hotel entrance, were much more enjoyable (especially Café 2day - to the left and Casanova Bali (to the right) ... both excellent value, super fresh and tasty and excellent value. We went on our first ever paragliding experience (after observing from our balcony, others landing and taking off from a nearby beach). Lots of water sports happening but the waterfall in the pool and prevailing winds seem to counteract the noise. We hired a driver to see Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temple (not on the same day) but both highly recommended - especially Uluwatu). We appreciated a complimentary later checkout as our plane did not leave until after 11pm. In its current condition, we would probably rank this resort as a 3-3.5 star hotel.

Room Tip: Level 3 near the ocean has a continual lovely fresh sea breeze from an open air feature wall - on th...

I stayed here with my boyfriend in June.

It is a great hotel, with lovely breakfast, a great pool (chairs come with service buttons so you can get cocktails delivered to your sunlounger!), gym, massages and wonderfully attentive service.

The area is better for families - there's shops, water sports beaches, snorkelling etc nearby. It's not a party destination, but you can get a taxi to Kuta for a fiver each way.

We saw a wedding go on at the hotel, looked gorgeous!

We really like to get out and see things however, and it wasn't the best location for us - if I was doing the trip again I would stay for a few nights in the North, Ubud, Kuta and try and get to the Gilli islands.

However, it wasn't much of a problem as you can hire a driver to take you on trips for about £30 for the whole day.

Ask the hotel for Dwi - he took us on several trips and was excellent.

The hotel rooms were quite large and the bathrooms were nice. Aircon worked perfectly, shower was very nice.

The room could have been cleaned more thoroughly whilst we were there. The duvets were wrapped in sheets and the duvets were stained. Would have preferred duvet covers (and clean duvets). The mattresses didn't fit the wooden bed bases so there was a shelf - caused a few bruises getting used to it.

The room was also a bit dark, probably due to the way it faced. You also had to have to blackout door shutters closed for any kind of privacy, would have been nicer to have curtains of some kind or nets so you can get changed and it can still be light!

Towels and rooms were cleaned every day though, and anything we requested they got for us. We had our laundry done several times and they got it back to us very quickly.

We used room service several times, was always good. Once it was late so they brought us free cake! There are lots of restaurants, spas, shops along the road that the hotel is located on. Definitely try Bumbu - amazing food. Massages in the spas outside were a little dingy but well worth £1.50! Don't be afraid to try them.

The beach by the hotel was disappointing - lots of seaweed and no waves. If surfing is your thing, head to Jimbaran (£5 taxi)- amazing waves. If snorkelling is your thing, we had an amazing time going on a day trip to Lembognan and also Tanjung beach.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay here. I wouldn't go back, but that is purely based on the location. Bali is a wonderful country with wonderful people, food and culture.

Room Tip: Go for an ocean view if you can afford it!

We stayed for 8 day's as the second stage to our holiday in Bali, excellently organised through Voyage Privee. This stay was celebrating a special occasion so I contacted Ian Cameron, the General Manager, via email prior to arrival in order to ensure our booking went smoothly; his helpful response typified the attentive and professional manner of all during our time here. All members of staff welcomed us warmly, and we will remember the friendliness of Josi (walk tour guide & kids club) and Shinta (front of house) with particular fondness. Our room was excellent; very spacious and clean, and the bed was so comfy! We were on a b&b package, which allowed us the freedom of dining either in the hotel or one of the many restaurants along the road outside; eating venue options are plenty and located close by the hotel. The hotel beach is one of the best in the area and, importantly, there are plenty of sun loungers to choose from here or next to the adjacent pool. We really enjoyed our stay and although we travelled as a couple, highly recommend it for families as well.

Room Tip: Rm 128 has been recently renovated & is located on the ground floor next to the Spa and close to...

We purchased a 10 day online deal through luxury escapes and stayed with a family of 4 in June. Although we did have some initial issues with getting the room described, after several emails this was resolved. We were pleasantly surprised that upon check in we were upgraded to the ocean front suite. This suite was amazing, it was huge and seemed brand new with 5 star fixtures and amenities and an incredible view of the pool and beach. It was spotless (as was the rest of the resort) and replenished with 8 bottles of water daily and other excellent products.

From check in to check out, the service we received was truly exceptional. All of our needs were met by the wonderful staff. Special mention needs to go to the staff in the kids club, particularly Yosi who showed great care for our children and is a wonderful ambassador for the hotel.

The breakfast did not have a huge choice but the food was fresh and plentiful, and there was definitely something for all tastes.

The pool was sparkling and there were always enough lounges. We had 8 massages at the spa and most were lovely.

The only negative was seeing the in house doctor for our child with an ear infection, he charged exorbitant fees for the medication needed and could not account for the price of these. There are much cheaper options for buying medication at any of the chemists.

Overall we loved the Grand Aston and would visit again.

Room Tip: The ocean front suites were spectacular and large enough for a family of 4

We have visited Bali 17 times and spent 14 days at this lovely resort in June this year. How lucky we were to find this paradise. From the moment we arrived we felt we had found the right place to stay. The front of house staff were very welcoming - to see the gorgeous Bali smile from Shinta just brightened our days. We were thrilled with the size of the room and wow - a bath - unusual in Bali hotels nowadays. The shower temperature never changed - perfect every time. We loved the open feel of the resort and the pool opening out to the ocean. So many hotels in Bali are overplanted making them very dark at night. The pool water was a bit too cold and could do with some heating. Breakfast was great - so much to choose from, although only one person cooking eggs probably needs addressing during busy times - she was flat-out poor thing. We tried all the restaurants but our favourite would be Giorgio's - the chocolate fondant dessert is to die for. La Luna food was pretty ordinary. Spent a lot of time around the pool and sometimes it was hard to get food and drink service - I think this could be improved by having a couple of the staff walk around with menus - sure you would sell more that way. Food prices are good but cocktails were Aussie prices and different mixtures all the time. Most days there were plenty of sunbeds but pool staff should adopt the rules - a lot of guests put towels on the sunbeds to save them for the day and wouldn't be seen until the end of the day. More activities around the pool would be good too, if you want to attract more families. But - the staff were all just gorgeous Bali - beautiful smiles and always welcoming. We would definitely stay here again. The Resort is very clean and the whole layout and style is rich Bali. Loved it.
