“Don't be fooled!”

The tour to Turtle island sounds like a very pleasant thing to do. You may think you are going to be able to swim with turtles in their natural habitat, well, you won't. After a 15 minute boat ride out to the island (which i think is just part of the mainland) allows boats to pull in next to a dirty old bar. You go in and see that they have some sectioned off areas with different sized turtles in tanks. They wil man handle the large turtle to try and get a photo which they will later try and sell you and apart form being able to pick up some smaller turtles (which was cool) the whole experience feels tacky and anything but natural for the poor turtles. They have a handful of other animals in cages that they will get out for you including a large python that my girlfriend really didn't like. Next you will be asked if you want to eat and drink to make money for the facility, DO NOT EAT THERE. The cleanliness of that place could not be worse. You will then be asked to make a donation - its purely a con plain and simple. I wish id read a review and made the choice not to go. I hope the work they do is helping rejuvinate the turtle popluation but after seeing the place i have my doubts. If you care about the turtles make a donation to a recognised conservation website and save yourself the awkward trip to turtle island.

“Terrible tour”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

Do not consider going to turtle island or the snorkelling via glass bottom boat that takes you there. The snorkelling was very disappointing & very crowded & this is not the busy season! Turtle island was dreadful & constant pressure to donate to the cause & then to also tip the volunteer guide. This short trip cost a fortune in the end. I was hoping to see some real efforts in improving turtle conservation. The turtles & other animals are used only for monetary purposes unfortunately & no real conservation was observable. 45 minutes on this island was far too long. Before & on arrival we were strongly advised to keep valuables close at all times. We could not wait for the whole thing to be over. We advise you 'Do not visit'!

“A nice experience”

We have been twice it's a good place for small kids and turtle lovers. My younger son loves it getting up close and patting the turtles.

“Not overly impressed any longer”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

We visited Turtle Island recently and found it to have become very run down. As other people have said the turles seem to be man handled now. Our first visit several years ago was to the other side (there seems to be two places?) and it was far better, with a larger range of animals and everything a lot cleaner. When we went two years ago, the turltes were a lot cleaner than this and they weren't handled as much, also the turtles seemed a lot livlier. We saw no one sitting on them tho. Don't know whether I'd bother going again as it was our 4th time over the years and seems to be getting far worse. As for the snorkelling, we seemed to get a roughish day and water was quite choppy, still saw plenty of fish, but not as much as we have done in the past. But fish aren't always plentiful at that spot and certainly aren't colourful. But we always enjoy having a look.

“Turtle sanctuary”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

This was a highlight visiting the island and being taken to a turtle rehabilitation centre where sick or damaged turtles are looked after and helped to heal ! We were able to take three small turtles and return them to the wild for a small donation! This was an amazing experience!
