Chalet Spycat
Reviewed January 19, 2014

We had an excellent week at spycat. The chalet was very thought out with robes, water, endless tea/coffee (Theresa even purchased some green tea as that was our favourite despite having lots of different teas available), hot tub, large garage for ski equipment and their transfers to and from piste.
The food was perfect, 4 courses each night and really extensive menu. Can't agree with previous comment about Paul's cooking as we love our food and it was absolutely spot on and plentiful too.
Their knowledge of slopes and the area was brilliant and they went out of their way to ensure you were having a good time.
I turned up to their chalet with a badly bruised hand (not a skiing injury) and ice and arnica was offered immediately.
Really good, the only downsize for us was the noise between rooms even though they were soundproofed.
Excellent week - thank you Paul, Theresa and Aisha

Absolutely superb. We had the warmest welcome and our hosts Paul and Teresa have thought of everything from arranging passes and equipment hire to advice on ski schools to the nice luxury touches like Egyptian cotton bedding and Molton Brown toiletries. We are well travelled and usually stay in 4 or 5* hotels but the service at Spycat was the best we have ever received.

The food was top notch and a beautiful varied menu ensured that very taste was catered for. I especially liked the sweet potato parcels with rocket salad and homemade chutney, the confit du canard with cherry compote and celeriac mash and the oh so perfect chocolate fondants and lemon soufflés were perfection on a plate. The homemade cakes were welcomed after a hard day on the slopes.

The chalet itself was immaculate and so cosy and warm. The beds were really comfy as were the pillows which is usually a bug bear of mine in holidays but not at Spycat. Everything just "works".

Paul and Teresa made this trip unforgettable. We couldn't have asked for more and we all felt quite sad saying goodbye. It felt we were leaving family! Don't bother looking anywhere else this is where you should stay. You will not be disappointed. We will be going back next Xmas, and the next and every year after that. Best holiday EVER!!!!!!!

Having just read the previous reviews they mainly have one thing in common, written by people who don't travel much. Also once a few say something is marvellous its a bit like 'the Kings new clothes' - everyone says it.We would not stay at Spycat again, it was ok, nothing really 'wrong' but several things which are better elsewhere. We've stayed in many chalets over the last 25 years and are again going to Morzine this season.
Firstly, Paul will admit he is not a chef. His food is honest cooking but not anything outstanding. Sadly both the duck and beef we had were very overcooked. Immediately after you finish dessert you have to leave the table, this was insisted upon even though us adults wanted to sit and natter, we had to join the kids on the insufficient sofas in front of the tv. This was so the table could be laid for breakfast.
The rooms are ok but our bathroom was tiny and only room for one person and even then you hit your head on the roof beams. The shower cubicle was the smallest it could be. Our 'wardrobe' was a hanging rail and no other hooks for hanging jackets/trousers to air. Theresa or Amy actually took our jackets off the back of the door and rehung the bathrobes on it! Bearing in mind the kids were watching tv trash all the time there are not tvs in the rooms so if you are like us you end up sitting quietly in your room. Incidentally, our mattress was rather old and had seen better days.
We had some indifferent weather and hats/jackets/gloves, etc were soaked. There is no-where to dry them - no boot room only a freezing cold garage space. It does have boot dryers which are only allowed the minimum time, so not nice and toasty in the morning. Also there is only 10 dryers and 14 guests! This meant the early ones had dry boots and ours remained damp.
Many chalets offer a taxi service to the slopes and it usually works very well. We had our own car and booked our passes online (by end Oct saves 10%) so we could only observe this service. It appeared you could only go to Super Morzine lift or under sufferance maybe Pleney. At no time was our other guests offered a day at Ardent or Les Gets. However, the thing which I found rather money grabbing was we were charged 15 euros to take us to town on chalet staff night off. The reason was given that we had not bought our ski passes through the chalet!
No, it wasn't the best and we will not return.. From the reviews last year we hoped it would be somewhere we would visit regularly.

Dear Judith from Essex

Of course you are entitled to your opinion but personally, I would never make derogatory comments about previous reviewers such as un-travelled and imply they don’t have the mental capability of making an informed review “The Kings New Clothes”. With regards to the rest of your comments, I’ll let that to Captain Subtext :-)

Once again Paul and Theresa made us welcome and feel very at home in Chalet Spycat. This was our third visit and I can't compare it with any other chalet experiences as I won't be going anywhere else. The chalet team (Rob and Amy) also helped make it a fantastic few days.
- No need to queue for rental gear - it is delivered;
- Lift drop off and pick up - get there early and miss the queues;
- Hot tub and sauna to relax those aching limbs;
- Suberb and varied food - never leave the table hungry (or sober!);
- Great value.
See you next year.
Rob

An utterly fabulous experience. This chalet is special. Rooms are scupulously clean and very comfortable. The fire in the main living area is a dream after a long cold day out. The food is outstanding, three courses for dinner every night and vegetarians are well catered for. Wonderful sweet treats waiting for you on return every day (the "Tiffin" was especially amazing). Paul and Teresa (the hosts) and their staff Amy and Rob made us feel very welcome and were truly helpful. From serving us drinks while in the outdoor spa to driving us back and forth to the ski lift, this was the best ski experience we have had and well worth the long trip from Western Australia.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony for extra view.

This has been my third year on the trot staying at Chalet Spycat! That should give you a clear message as to how great this place is.
The four course meals are divine, the afternoon home made cakes truly scrummy!
The chalet is beautiful! Scrupulously clean and very comfortable rooms make this an amazing place to stay. Hot tub, sauna, log fire, abundance of DVDs and books.... Perfect for a long weekend or hopefully if I get my way, a 7 night break next time.
Nothing is too much trouble for Teresa and Paul, assisted in the chalet this season by Rob and Amy. The four of them will go out of their to make your stay perfect.
No lift pass ticket office queues - Paul had our ski passes ready and waiting
No trips to equipment hire shops - our prebooked skis were already at the chalet when we arrived, and the ski technician was on hand to adjust the bindings.
Skiing the Porte de Soleil area is something I'll never bore of.
I can guarantee I will be returning next year, if not for another sneaky weekender this year.
