The Gasthaus Steinbock exceeded all expectations. It was very clean and recently remodeled. We really liked the hardwood floors and the small but new bathroom. Our room had a beautiful view hanging above the raging river. Breakfast was very nice, coffee, tea, juice, breads, cheese, cereal, meat. The staff spoke excellent English and was very helpful with tips on getting to Interlaken or up to Grindelwald or Wengen. They held our luggage after check out until we stopped back by when passing through on the train. The hotel lies about 3 minutes outside of Interlaken in the foothills on the main train line to the alps. Wilderswil is a quaint little town. There are several resaurants and a grocery for all your needs, but not lots of shopping like Interlaken. The hotel is an easy 5 minute walk up narrow cobblestone streets and across a covered brigde. It would also be a great spot if you had a car. It's tucked away. There are no other businesses in the same neighborhood, but 5 minutes of walking will get you to a nice little business district. Most of the other hotels in Wilderswil are located in the town center, closer to more resaurants and some shops. The hotel can give you a free pass to get into Interlaken by bus (10 minutes) or train (5 minutes). It's a very nice getaway. If you're looking for a quite romantic spot, tucked up against a mountain, with goats for neighbors instead of tourist shops, the Steinbock is a great base for day trips into the Berner Alps.

The place was homely, it was nice to have a small balcony area in front of our room, the location next to the river in a small village was beautiful. Breakfast: espresso coffee was great, the buffet itself was very basic (2 types of meat, 2 types of cheese, ~4 types of breads, yogurt, boxed cereals, jam) but did the job. Notably they did not refill the buffet at the morning wore on, which lead to other guests making comments like "see, I told you we should have come earlier, all the ham is gone" (the ham was nice). The food on offer in the restaurant for dinner is excellent. On the downside as cars drove past the hotel in the morning, they shifted down gear to get up the hill which could get a bit noisy.

One specific thing really messed with one of us: smoking. When people smoked at the reception desk downstairs (which appears to be the place set aside for smokers in the hotel), the smoke would go directly into the stairwell and go into the corridor of the 1st floor where our rooms were. As there were no windows in the hallway, the only way for the smoke to go was to seep into the rooms. So whenever someone smoked downstairs, the air in the reception area would be clear quickly, but you could smell the smoke in your room and then you would get a whack of smoke in the face when you opened your room door to go out. This was really unpleasant. We spoke to the hotel management and they responded to our complained quite professionally, aired the hallway and promised to close the door between the stairwell and corridor whenever someone smoked. Unfortunately, the problem did not go away as the management didn't close the said door when people smoked. Ironically, it was actually the staff who did most of the smoking. Also ironically, there was a "no-smoking" sign in our room.

Overall, if travellers are non-smokers and can't deal very well with cigarette smoke smell in their rooms, then we'd advise you to avoid this place. It really is a nice hotel, but the smoke issue was a bit of a whammy.
