“A pleasant surprise - the clue is in the name”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

A Groupon deal, we had paid extra for a superior room. Reception was very welcoming and we were shown to the garden suite around 20 yards from the main building in outbuildings at least 200 years old.

A small entrance hall lead on to the large bathroom recently refurbished with over bath shower - not very powerful but very hot. The bedroom had a welcoming courtesy tray including bottled water, flat screen TV, a king size bed with lovely crisp linen. A small sitting room with a further TV completed the suite

The décor was showing some signs of wear and tear but with its country scenes and olde worlde furnishings we were totally captivated.

An evening meal was part of the deal which we took in the small dining room which appeared somewhat functional after the wow factor of our room. A brasserie type menu with side orders as extras but with ample portions. We both took the deep fried brie and chicken which were excellent and no room for deserts.. Breakfasting at 8.30am we were offered a hot breakfast which we accepted. This was freshly made and arrived hot with coffee and toast The cold buffet appeared to comprise a choice of apple juice, pineapple juice, some cereal, yoghurt and fruit salad which we took to be the starter to the main meal had we wished to indulge and were surprised on paying the bill to find we had been charged extra as the hot breakfast was not included.

Despite this we consider our stay to have given good value and a very pleasant experience

Top marks to all the staff

Would we stay again. Yes we hope to but not at rack rates..

Room Tip: Worth the little extra for a superior room

My partner and I booked one nights bed breakfast and evening meal on 6th April through groupon, the hotel is well layed out with some rooms in seperate buildings in the courtyard areas. The room that we stayed in was everything that you could wish for, huge bathroom, beautifully appointed bedroom, overlooking the courtyard. We had dinner, and the food was wonderful, the staff were accomodating and helpful. The only bad part was that we could only book for one night, will definetly be back, and cant wait!!

Just stayed here last night and I have to say it was excellent.

The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful.

The evening meal at the restaurant was fantastic - my wife and I enjoyed every course - simply brilliant!!

Try the Blue Monkey beer – it goes down very well 

The room was very nice, clean, warm and well appointed.

Can’t fault it....

We WILL be visiting this again - a little gem of a place.

Just returned from a Groupon deal at The Country Cottage House Hotel. When we arrived we were greeted by David at reception and check in was painless and pleasant. We had upgraded and were given the Mulberry suite. As previous reviews have said, this is a like a small barn conversion. Seperate lounge leading out onto a patio with a table and chairs in the beautiful garden. Being spring (my favourite season) the garden was full of tupils, daffodils and other spring flowers, lovely. Back in the room, a large comfortable bed, tea & coffee facilities, dressing table and a large flat screen TV. The bathroom has a huge jacuzzi bath, which is fab, and a corner shower; the decor could do with being updated and as previously said, a bit odd that the glass isn't frosted in the window. That said though, we did say "Wow" when we walked in and it was lovely and warm; the heating stayed on all night. Apparently it is the honeymoon suite and overall is lovely.

We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food was very tasty with a good choice, like a gastro pub menu. The staff were friendly but descrete. Breakfast in the morning as great, lots of choice of cereals, fruit juices, yogurts and fresh fruit salad. Tea and coffee and toast is brought to your table as a matter of course, and you can also get to order a cooked English breakfast which was delicious and hot. I heard someone ask for an omlete, which was duly delivered. The staff are very helpful and nothing seems to be too much trouble.

On checking out, on the reception desk was another offer for basically the same deal as we'd just been on. We wanted to bring our children back as a treat and David suggested the Rose Room. This room is in the oldest part of the main building and we were shown it to see if it was suitable. Well, it is so quirky with an upstairs to it, very uneven floors and all the original beams on show, gorgeous. We've booked up to return and although they don't have a childrens' menu, David said just to call ahead with what the children would like and the chef will cook it for them! Can't say fairer than that really.

We would recommend this as a treat just to get away for a night, the garden is lovely with a small courtyard with rooms off of it.

Room Tip: Each room is individually designed, so I can't really comment.

We only ate a family lunch here, but it was not very enjoyable.

The seating was uncomfortable, five of us squashed into a small table in a corner. This after we had booked ahead. The food was OK, but there were no real ale options, only overpriced industrial “beers”. The décor was dated, and jaded, and the whole experience left a lot to be desired.

It seemed very expensive for the low level of quality.

We stayed Saturday night, 17th March, on the Groupon deal, it was fantastic. It was our second time, the first being our amazing wedding here last August.

I'm surprised that the reviewer below had issues booking on a Saturday, maybe they left it too late to book on a Saturday night. Half the guests there on Saturday were Grouponers', when we booked we had a choice of dates, many Saturdays included.

We arrived, check in was efficient, David was very friendly throughout the day/afternoon/evening and at breakfast the next morning. We were in the Iris suite, a Junior suite, was expecting one of the standard doubles for the Groupon deal, so were pleasantly surprised. Enormous bed, almost needed a step ladder to get in, it was comfy too! The bathroom was fine, the shower was almost a little too hot, which is better than it being too cold. There were a couple of things that could do with a bit of attention. The grout could do with whitening, the bathroom would benefit from a lick of paint and a tidy up and the sink had a large crack in it. Also the lighting in the main area of the bedroom was not very good for 'getting ready', make up, deciding on clothes etc.

After popping out to the cinema in the afternoon (a rare child free treat!) we returned to our room to get ready for our dinner. We were asked when checking in what time we would like. We sat in the bar with drinks, bought over by the staff! and given the menu to choose from. It was the same menu as other non grouponers and was very good, lots of choice, in fact it was hard to decide! After a short while we were shown through to the restaurant. The waiting staff were prompt and friendly, bringing up the wine menu and then wine very quickly. The food was amazing, we weren't disappointed, the Salmon fishcake was fantastic and the steak was cooked to perfection. We were pretty much finished off by desert!

A drink in the bar after the meal was swiftly followed by collapsing into the enormous bed!

Check out was swift and friendly as ever. The staff are a credit to this place, they work day and night with smiles and excellent service. The food is also faultless.

We will definitely return again for food and accommodation!

Me and my partner stayed here Saturday Night (11th Feb), it was a group on voucher purchased as a gift.

Upon arrival we were welcomed by a very friendly Gentleman who asked us what time we wanted to sit down for our evening meal, did we want a wake up call & newspapers..very effiecient!

Checked in with ease and was shown to our room, lovely building away from the main called honeysuckle i believe. Nice, clean very spacious, bed was large & comphy, flat screen TV hot drink facilities.. would of liked an iron but im sure if i had of asked they would of given me one (partners GHD's did my shirt nicely :) ).

Evening meal was superb..as was the service..all very friendly took time to have a conversation & were intrested! Nice restaurant area with low level music fantastic!
Breakfast served Buffet style which was all nice & hot, plenty of choice, toast delivered to table without even asking..

Having worked in a hotel myself for over 4 years I can honestly say this place is of excellent quality & standards are clearly high...would i stay again?? try & stop me !!

Keep up the fantastic work & we look forward to seeng you again very soon !!!
