We had stayed @ Chateau de Bagnols when it was owned by Lady Hamlin so I was concerned that it would not be the same 5* experience under the new owner. I was pleasantly surprised that the only changes were for the better.....i.e., the new glass roof over the courtyard and the wonderful GM. Food and décor were still fabulous. Sleeping rooms and bathrooms were very comfortable but very much in the European-fashion. Bathrooms do not have separate shower stalls but that was not an issue for us as it might be for less adaptable guests. The advantage of staying in such a beautifully-converted and maintained historic site far outweighed the disadvantage of a separate shower stall. Very pricy place but would return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are unique and charming. I like the rooms in the chateau with a south-facing view...

A little late in submitting our review but this was an experience we just had to share with you.

Having heard and read some outstanding reviews of this historic Chateau we decided on the way from Calais to home [ Nice ] it would be a good stopover in the idyllic Beaujolais region.

How wrong could we have been and if any 5 Star listed establishment needed a " wake up " call then this would be in our top five.

Great location, lovely grounds and a what a history and the views from the outside dining area were to die for.

That is what non-resident guests for lunch and dinner would have experienced which would have made for a great visit.

The restaurant food when we stayed was perfectly acceptable except that the menu did not change for 4 days for either lunch a dinner, so guests to lunch or dinner only would not be aware of this, how ever we were and the second night of our stay we chose room service which was offered from a menu with a more extensive choice and to be brutally honest the food served in the room was superior to the restaurant offering.

We stayed in suite for 4 nights and this was some suite with so many of the expected 5 Star amenities not on offer or not available.

It was not particularly warm weather but Air Conditioning would have been preferred, so would have a regular walk in shower and a fridge or mini bar an absolute necessity plus any possibility of an ice bucket seemed to stretch room service to breaking point.

A choice of pillows , a Comment Card [ well that was no surprise ], fresh flowers, daily newspaper and perhaps a choice of English speaking TV programmes considering that English speaking guests were the highest proportion of Residents patronising this Chateau.

As mentioned we did opt to stay in a " suite " , the separate sitting area was furnished with a settee, chair and tables that would have been a welcome addition to any bonfire.

The suite on the whole was dirty, there were insects the size of mice, the lighting in the two rooms and bathrooms was no better than a 20 watt bulb.

We did convey our dissatisfaction to the hotel manager who strongly defended the hotels 5 Star Deluxe rating, but if you are accustomed to 5 Star accommodation and everything that goes with this rating then try Chateau de Bagnols for lunch on a warm summers evening with an outside table, but do not expect prompt service and just one more observation the chef can go home early on a Sunday evening leaving the staff and kitchen " rudderless " and that about sums up this hotel, its in a world of its own , living on its history and past reputation, heading down stream with no rudder to steer its course to what could an outstanding establishment.

Sorry Chateau de Bagnols , get real you a million miles from where you should be?

Room Tip: Not in the main building as most rooms face onto the kitchen which starts it work at 0700.

From the moment we entered the gates, we were made to feel welcome. The chateau is beautifully kept and decorated, and as well as fantastic rooms, there are numerous areas in which to lounge and relax. Each room is different, and the older design style has been maintained, with modern comforts added and sympathetic to this. The bathroom we had was in the old tower area, and had a round shape with a bath in the centre. Not all of the rooms have showers, so if you do not like baths, be sure to request a room with shower. The toilets were unique but functional. The rooms have incredible views of the large and beautifully kept grounds. There is lots of room to roam and explore, and there are lovely areas to sit and read or have a drink indoors or outside. The restaurant had great food, but the service was not very good - one of the only negatives of the chateau. The pool looked good, but it was too cold to swim.

Room Tip: If you need a shower, be sure to request a room with this.

We were impressed by the hotel manager coming out to greet us. The staff in general were all charming. Our room was tastefully decorated, the plumbing interesting and the towels soft! The original frescos have been preserved wherever possible and the gardens beautifully laid out. Sadly the weather was too inclement to swim but the pool, nevertheless, looked inviting!

We enjoyed all the meals we had, including breakfast. The only very minor fault one could pick is the lack of tea-making skill! Maybe the next time we visit I should demonstrate how to make a really good cup of tea! Otherwise everything was excellent!

Staying at the Chateau was a highlight of our trip. This is a 13th century chateau set among spectacular gardens. Our room was furnished with 17th century antiques. Exquisite in every respect. I wish it had been a little warmer so we could have enjoyed the pool. Sublime.

Superb hotel is situated in a historic chateau on the edge of the lovely village of Bagnols with beautifully kept gardens overlooking the beaujolais countryside.

The welcome was special as we were met at our car and taken straight to our room as hotels of this quality should do. By any stretch of the imagination could our "Standard Room" be described as standard. It was spectacular with original wall murals and antique furniture in a vast room which opened onto a circular bathroom created in one of the chateau's four towers with central bath and two washbasins. The room had two doors to ensure complete acoustic insulation to the room for a sound night's sleep. Everywhere there was attention to the smallest detail.

The chateau had guest-rooms around a central courtyard within the Chateau itself whilst further rooms were in the outbuildings formed in an adjacent courtyard. Our room was on the 1st floor in the main chateau but the rooms in the adjacent courtyard appeared to offer guests a less grand room but with the opportunity to sit on a grass terrace looking out over the countryside below.

The service was exceptional and friendly.

The restaurant was superb with a huge stone staircase stretching almost the full width of the vast dining room. The food was good but not exceptional. offering well cooked if not inventive cooking. The experience was the dining room. The one criticism was the hotel's belief we wanted to hear quite loud jazz orientated music both in the dining room and the lounge. Unnecessary, out of keeping and obtrusive.

Chateau de Bagnols was not cheap, but if you want that special hotel to remember for a lifetime, this is for you. A great stop off on the way south to Provence and the Riviera or for a weekend break in wine country.

It's hard to add more about this place that han't already been said.

Brakfast was awesome - great food on a bridge...over a (dry) moat looking out over the manicured gardens?

Service was great, of course. I highly recommend this place for couples.
