“A beautiful winter chalet experience”
Reviewed March 22, 2010

A wonderful place to spend a long skiing weekend. The accommodation was first class, and in reality was just as good as the photos on the website. Fantastic food and lovely, friendly hosts made this holiday one to remember. The location was in driving distance of the slopes, making it a very restful place to stay. The views from the chalet are amazing, and would love to see the different seasons here. The 'icing on the cake' has to be the hot tub under the stars!....... I am sure I will return....!

A lovely treat. Janet and Larry have clearly thought about what would take the hassle out of skiing and have developed the perfect answer with personal transfers, skis, passes and lessons arranged as required, door to door slope delivery so no carrying skis or walking in boots, fantastic food, beautiful rooms and great waiter service to the hot tub! With all the hassle, admin, logistics and cooking sorted all that was left was to ski, eat and catch up with friends - a great place to do all 3.

I think I should first outline what we were expecting: a luxury chalet, with top class food, minutes from Morzine.

With us coming from 3 different airports Janet and Larry were great with arranging transfers especially as we had one delayed flight and we didn't have to hang around waiting.

Janet also arranged for our lift passes to be ready for us as well as the ski hire company to deliver the skis which took the hassle out of these areas.

On arrival we were all pleased with the chalet overall- it is beautifully presented and all were pleased with the rooms - apart from the three ladies who had to share a room that should have been a twin at best. There was one wardrobe for the the three of them and was extremely cramped - this did not balance with the rest of the group who had lovely rooms with ample space. It should have been made clear so that we could either have chosen an alternative (bigger) chalet or reduced the cost for those with a lesser room.

In order to keep the chalet in such good condition there are a number of rules that you would expect - no shoes indoors, being careful with things but these rules were pointed out to the group on numerous occasions and at times it felt like you were on holiday with your parents watching over you - we are all adults with well cared for homes and I think we would have felt more relaxed without these being pointed out to us so regularly.

Champagne and canapes were served each evening before dinner and the meals in the evenings were excellent with a good variety and the wine/beer free flowing throughout. I think our group felt that we were cramped around the table whereas we would have fitted comfortably if the hosts had eaten earlier/later to provide room for us.

The hot tub was amazing, especially after a days skiing. The afternoon cakes delicious with tea etc made for us.

Breakfast was a let down - some porridge, croissants, bread and bargain cornflakes. apple, banana and orange, yogurt were available. However the cooked choice was bacon one day and boiled eggs on one other day - not the 5 star luxury we were hoping for.

On the skiing front you should be aware that Morzine is at least 20 minutes away by minibus - you are taken to the slopes in the morning and picked up later, however if it is likely that you will ski at different times or some will want to finish early this is not the place for you. If you are all going to ski together as one group every day it would not be a problem. The local ski area is good - but only really for half a day. So to be clear this chalet is NOT in Morzine - it is 20 minutes away. I think the website should be more clear that you need transport to the slopes not that is provided as a nice extra.

Each morning Larry loaded the skis into the bus ready for us which was nice. They both skiied with us at various times - some times pre-agreed and some we felt they sort of invited themselves - some of the group really liked this whilst others would have preferred we were on our own - if you would like to be guided around this could be the perfect place for you. Larry also helped with his tips on how to improve our skiing.

With regards to the space - I think the hosts should really only rent 3 rooms and keep one for themselves - they sleep in their office and there are no shower facilities so we felt uneasy that one of our rooms must be being used to shower in while we were out - a shower must be needed at some stage in the week!

One of our guests was a non-skiier and on one afternoon the hosts had friends round in the living room - not something you would expect when you have supposedly hired the chalet for a week!

In summary I think Janet and Larry are lovely people who are trying really hard to accommodate their guests however this is their lifestyle dream and you are left feeling that you have been to stay in their own home, rather than a group of friends booking a chalet for a weeks holiday - some people may love this but as a group we felt that this infringed on our time together and we weren't as relaxed as we would have expected.

If you want to stay in a great chalet with lovely food, have a group of 6 or less, don't mind travelling to the slopes each day and can put up with a bit of parental overseeing then go for it - maybe we were just a bit too young and independent for this type of environment. A lot of the nice extras are available on most chalet holidays now so is expected at that price.

The value and rooms have been downgraded due to the space issues - if only 3 were rented this would have been a 5 for the rooms and 4 for value - the breakfast would need to be upgraded to get a 5. The chalet is absolutely spotless. I have stated I would not recommend to friend as my friends would probably have the same opinion - it depends what you are looking for. If you know what to expect this may be the holiday for you.

I thank for the reviewer for their constructive criticism but have just a few points to clarify. Chalet des Etoiles is not a 20 minutes drive to the slopes being 12 minutes drive to the Pleney lift in Morzine, 15 minutes drive to the Ardent lift above Montriond, 13 minutes drive to the Nyons lift in Morzine and 2 minutes drive or a 5 minute walk to the Grande Terche in St Jean d'Aulps. Contrary to the reviewers belief not all chalets provide the door to door service that we do and many skiers can be seen waiting at bus stops particularly in Morzine itself which is very spread out. Our two 4x4 vehicles allow us to take our guests straight into the heart of the Portes du Soleil with easy and quick access to all of the linked resorts.

The Grande Terche itself , although not linked to the other resorts has been described in the Sunday Times as a hidden gem in the Portes du Soleil with its varied skiing for all abilities ,queue free lifts and friendly and courteous lift attendants. The more accomplished skier would definately find more than half a days worth of skiing here with its abundant off piste , 20 km circuit on the quietest and most beautiful tree-lined red runs in the Portes du Soleil and views of Mont Blanc, Les Dents du Midi, Lac Leman and the Roc d'Enfer.

With respect to rules, we prefer to discretely remind guests when they wear out door shoes, indoors, than to have signs everywhere which would detract from the home from home atmosphere of the chalet. Yes the chalet is our home and most guests appreciate the added comforts that this results in.

Overall we have a good holiday with friends and maybe unlike others reviewing, we stayed for a week.
The chalet has 4 rooms and advertises for 9 guests. If this happens, the hosts end up sleeping in their office on a sofa bed, that has no washing facilities. We discovered that they were using the en suites of one of the rooms when we were out skiing and for the cost of a week this is unacceptable and we also felt inappropriate. Additionally one of the double rooms has 3 single beds in it with only one wardrobe, not the luxury they were expecting or had paid for, as no discounts were made for 3 adults in the same room.

Something we also found uncomfortable was that the hosts ate their evening meal and breakfast at the same table every meal time, the table is designed to seat 8 -with our party of 9 and the hosts this was very cramped and it would have been more enjoyable to enjoy our meal & conversation with those we were more comfortable with. This gave the chalet a B&B feel, not the luxury chalet experience we all expected. Once seated in the sofa areas, be prepared to be joined by the hosts, their presence was constant and a overbearing which did not create a relaxed atmosphere you would want on a holiday.

The location became an issue as it is a 15 minute car ride away from Morzine and the main Portes du Soleil region. This is a major problem as the vehicle they use can only legally transport 8 plus the driver, a fact only explained to us when one of the party had to get out of the van prior to a police road block - not good. The local area that is within a five minute walk can be completed within half a day, so you do rely on their transport as a taxi costs a minimum of 25 euro one way.

The chalet is only suitable for 6 guests and if you can cope with the chalet owners with you at meal times and in the evening you will have an enjoyable time. The food is good, but overall not the luxury or experience we had expected.

We welcome constructive criticism as it gives us a chance to improve our service.
Discount:- Our prices are very competitive and discounts are not normally offered, however, on this occasion one was given for the 3rd person in the triple room. The group leader chose to share the discount between the group.
Bathroom Facilities:-Our alleged use of the guests showers is unfounded as we have our own private facilities. We go into the bedrooms daily to make the beds, clean the bathrooms and showers, replenish supplies and change towels mid week.
Transport:- Both our VW 9 seater 4x4 and our Volvo 7 seater 4x4 were available had the guests requested them and both were used during the week.
The chalet accommodates 9 very comfortably.
Ski chalets are a genre of holiday where the hosts join the guests for dinner. Skiers who are familiar with this enjoy it. We did not sit at the table for breakfast or join the guests round the fire after dinner apart from one evening when we had a quiz.
This group were mostly new to skiing and had not experienced the high level of service offered by a chalet holiday. We put a great deal of effort into looking after the needs of our guests to ensure everything runs smoothly from organising airport transfers, lift passes, ski hire, lessons, dietary requirements, daily transport at the guests convenience, meal times at the guests convenience, drinks in the hot tub, organising in-house massages and spa visits, providing wi-fi , recording favourite TV programmes etc.
All carried out for these particular guests.
Unfairly it would appear that we have been marked down on service because we were too attentive and too accommodating.
We pride ourselves on the service we offer as comments in our guest book and other Trip Advisor reviews testify.

absolutely top drawer. The ratings do not lie.

Janet and Larry make you feel very welcome and cannot do enough to make the stay the best. Being driven to and from the airport and ski lifts is a major bonus and having Janet and Larry as ski guides in the mornings helps tremendously in getting to know the area.

The food is excellent. I do not remember anything being left by anyone !!

Cannot recommend enough.

We ski a lot, ususally 3-4 long weekends each season, and this was an exceptional experience. Janet and Larry are amazingly friendly and welcoming hosts. The food is excellent and the chalet extremely comfortable and cozy. The local ski area is great fun for a day and Morzine and Avoriaz lifts are about 15 minutes away but absolutely hassle free as Larry shuttles you to and from in the mini-bus. Definately take Larry & Janet up on their offer to ski with you - they know the area really well and skiing with them each morning helped us enjoy the skiing even more. Probably not the best location if you're after all night apres ski but the chalet is so nice that we never wanted to leave. And we loved the hot tub in the snow!

The des Etoile is a beautiful chalet which has fantastic views overlooking the valley. The bedrooms are both immaculate and very comfortable, all which are en-suite and you are even provided with your own bathrobes and slippers.
The local sking in the Grande Terche area is good and virtually queue free. However for the more experienced skier its good to know that the access to the Portes du Soleil is only 10-15 minutes away courtesy of Larry's mini bus.
Larry and Jan the owners were excellent hosts nothing was to much trouble for them. The food and wine is 5 Star, be prepared to gain weight !!!!

Overall the 7 of us has a fantastic time in a fantastic chalet with fantastic hosts, you need to go to experience it ( we highly recommended it )
