“Best Meal we had in Scotland”
Reviewed December 7, 2011

Although we did not stay at the Erigmore, we ate there 2 nights in a row. First- the food was to die for..simply delicious! My husband said it was the best Rump steak he ever had. The atmosphere in the main dining room was something out of a movie- oak paneled walls, candles, a giant fireplace with pixie lights strung around it, excellent, attentive service-nothing was too much trouble. The manager, Charles Mair was lovely and made us feel most welcome. I can't wait to return!

Just returned from a two night stay in one of the luxury spa lodges and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The lodge was beautifully furnished and well equipped. A lovely decking area and a hot tub in the garden finished it off well. A five star property which I would have rated six stars if the lodge had wifi (wifi available at the main bar).
The estate has a bar and restaurant in the main house and indoor attended swimming pool. Didnt try the swimming pool but did use the bar and restaurant which were only a two minute walk from the lodge. The restaurant was good value and food was delicious, the chef is great at curries.
All the staff were welcoming and friendly and I would definitely return here for another stay.

Well it was a lovely break, feel really refreshed, however it depends on what floats your boat!

ACCOMODATION

There's a variety of accomodation available from cottages and apartments to caravan's, lodges and holiday homes. We stayed in a 2 bed holiday lodge in the Paddock hire fleet and it was fabulous. The lounge had a plasma TV and feature fireplace, with patio doors leading out onto a private (small) deck, with patio furniture. The living area had a very comfortable suite, a dining table and chairs and was decorated in neutral calming colours. The kitchen looked brand spanking new (the whole lodge did), top of the range cooker, dishwasher, fridge freezer and loads of cupboard space.

The bathroom was spacious for a lodge, consisted of bath with overhead shower, sink with cabinet and toilet.

The kids room was the same size you'd get in a caravan as was our room. Both had bedside cabinets and mirrored wardrobes with sliding doors. Our room had a door leading to an en-suite which had a toilet, sink with cabinet and a shower big enough for two!

FACILITIES AT THE ESTATE

If it's sunny then great. If it's raining then there isn't really much to do at the estate itself. They have a pool table, a small arcade with three games, and a widescreen TV that had football on (grr - not a footie fan!). Note: The "library" is not a library - it's the name of the restaurant which we only saw open once, though there was the zebra bar for pub grub. We cooked in our lodge so can't comment on the food.

The adventure playground for kiddies wasn't up to much. The slide wasn't "slidy", the teepee and totem are basically ornamental - not really for playing on - the climbing wall was tiny. The only thing my older child enjoyed was the zip slide.

The toddler playground is ideal for little ones. My youngest enjoyed the swings, the see-saw, the "boing" and the rocking bike.

There is also a court to play ball games in - we didn't use it so can't comment on whether it was any good.

Swimming pool - freezing, but you get used to it. It's approximately 40 foot long, good for a swim and wasn't jam packed either so the kids were able to play in the shallow end without disturbance. They also have a range of floats and pool toys for the kids. The jacuzzi and sauna was good, and again empty which meant peace and quiet! The changing facilities are co-ed. (take a pound coin for the locker - you get it back). There's a hairdryer.

There was a visiting vocalist - he was very good, got the crowd going but that was the only night there was entertainment; it's not like Parkdean/Hoseasons where there is ongoing entertainment all day and night, and there are no kids clubs.

We saw lots of bunny rabbits and hedgehogs running about the estate.

The staff we met with were all very nice and hospitable.

OFF SITE

We visited birnam wood because I wanted to see the Birnam oak (Made famous in Macbeth), that was a lovely short woodland walk and we came across a brilliant playpark for the kids. I'll confess to playing myself in it - great fun!

We also went to the Hermitage, about 1/4 a mile off the A9. An hours walk all the way round, we came across Ossain's hall which is a small folley leading to glass doors and a balcony which overlooks a beautiful waterfall. We also came across a stone bridge and Ossain's cave, and a wonderfully wood carved totem pole. Beautiful woodland walk. Have to pay for parking - can'[t remember how much but think it was £2. Worth it though, if you like woodland walks. Just be careful the further in you get because you're right on tht edge - hold on to the little ones.

We visited the Dunkeld Catherdral - lovely ruin but inaccessible due to safety checks. You can go into the restored part but we couldn't as there was a wedding taking place. the catherdral sits on the banks of the river tay and is a lovely spot for a picnic.

We went to the beatrix potter exhibition and garden. The lady could not have been more helpful and the cafe had good grub, but on the whole it wasn't as great as I was expecting. I'd still recommend a visit though if you are passing by.

We visited the loch lewes visitor centre - about 4 miles out of Dunkeld. Don't bother. £7.50 for a family ticket and all we saw was birds which we could see from our lodge.

We went to a place called Stanley about 10 miles away. It has a farm with an adventure park with massive slides, a fort, boucing pillow (bit like a bouncy castle), zip slide, pedal go carting and much more. It has a cafe, and you can visit the farm animals - though there aren't many animals there. £20 for a family of four. Felt the cost was a lot but again enjoyed it. If you are going to go here, be warned - just as you come into Stanley you will see a big wooden sign at the left leading up a dirt track. Ignore it - we almost got stuck - it leads to someone's house! Carry on going, you will see a school. Turn right and then you will see the road sign for the park (or ask - we did and were directed very well by locals).

Finally, if you like a chip supper then Dunkeld Fish Bar comes highly recommended. I haven't had good old fashoined fish n chips like that in ages. Like I said, most of our activities were outdoors and we were lucky enough to have the weather for it. If it had been raining I don't know what we'd have done for fun so it may be an idea to check around and see what is available in bad weather, particularly if you have children who get bored easily. Or you could always chill in the jacuzzi or sauna! (though kiddies under 16 aren't allowed in the jacuzzi or sauna).

We stayed in June 2010 - but there was no option for this on the drop down, which is why the date of our stay shows differently

We stayed in the holiday lodge for 4 nights and had a lovely time. My husband and I wanted somewhere not to far from home that had swimming and playpark for our two children (3 and 10 months). The lodge was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. The only slight criticism was that, although a cot had been left, no one had thought about how to fit it into either bedroom. There was not enough room for it so my husband had to stand one of the beds on it's end.
Staff in the restaurant and swimming were very helpful and excellent with our children.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and would recommend it to our friends and will be returning!

Thank you very much.
