We stayed in the Princess Lokelani suite for about a week early July. This place was pure paradise! It was secluded making it a very romantic relaxing stay. It also had more of a feel like a bed and breakfast than a hotel because of the limited number of rooms. And was more integrated with the locals which I preferred. In my opinion ,the stay here was honestly better than our over the water bungalow in BoraBora.
Eileen was a great hostess! She greeted us after breakfast every morning taking care of any need.I loved the attention to detail and the grounds and garden was simply amazing. Most of all I loved all the flowers that were laid out on the table for breakfast and dinner. BTW the food is quite good too!
I loved the location. Got to watch the sun rise every morning and the water was like a mirror reflecting the sky! It sits along a large chunk of coral with a slight sandy top. Definitely recommend buying a pair of water shoes for this trip (coral is sharp). We kept a roll from dinner every night to feed the fish in the morning and one morning we watched a sting ray swim by. Did i say this place is Incredibly special and unique .. still missing this paradise! I also recommend doing the private motu and four wheel tour .
Only negative thing i can think of were the cats. I dislike cats and the way they smell immensely! But then again this place was so beautiful and peaceful its was easy to over look .
I loved hotel fenua mataïoa and plan to definitely revisit!

We stayed three nights at Fenua Mataioa, two nights in the Princess Lokelani suite and one night in one of the garden bungalows and absolutely loved our time there!! It is just as lovely as all of the reviews say.. and Eileen is a wonderful host! The Princess Lokelani suite was just absolutely gorgeous on the water, and if you love gardens and being close to Bungalows the garden suites are nice as well.
But for us, we really loved being on Lokelani on the water.. the sunsets from your own private deck are just spectacular and it is one of the most peaceful beautiful spots we have ever travelled to. The hotel is in the same area as the intercontinental, so you get the same gorgeous views, waters, sunsets, but without the hefti price tag!!
Also make sure you have dinner there at least one night as the food is fantastic (although we did find the food more on the more expensive side) however the quality of food was wonderful!
The breakfasts of fresh fruit and pastries, juice and Eileen's wonderful handmade jams fabulous! Would highly recommend this little piece of paradise!!

Absolutely fabulous! A very romantic, well run small hotel/b&b. We stayed in the Princess Lokelani suite. Everything was perfect. Fresh cut flowers everywhere (cats too, FYI), very private bedroom, bathroom and seating area by the water. Eileen is a great hostess and dinner was excellent. It's a long way to travel for us, but we will definitely be back one day.

We were lucky enough to stay five mid-week days in the off-season and had the hotel to ourselves. It is a beautiful place, secluded and calm, made extra special by the love and attention that Eileen pours into it - plus her wonderful cuisine!

Spectacular sunsets, swimming, kayaking, boat trips, did we mention cuisine?

Unique and unusual decor by Eileen, with a touch of the exotic, amidst a lush and beautiful garden.

Very personal and attentive service - Eileen and her terrific staff really care that you should have a wonderful stay.

This hotel would especially appeal to cat lovers, as there are many in the garden; those with allergies might find it a drawback.

We actually stayed here in 2011, not May 2012, but have been meaning to add a review ever since because we liked a lot.

This was our third stay at "Eileen's" place in paradise. Twice in 2009 and then in December 2012. It's peaceful, private and romantic. Eileen has given much thought and attention to detail in decorating each of the bungalows and attached lanai's. There are beautiful flowers throughout the rooms, on the beds, in the bathrooms -- it's just amazing. And they are all from her beautiful garden. There is a video on you tube that shows the property and its beautiful setting. The food preparation and presentation is really special. Fresh fruits from her garden are in her fresh juices and jams, as well as served with the breakfast and dinner of the day. Excellent dinners are prepared by Serge and are typically made with local fish (or even lobster!). There are several private bungalows on the property all equally beautiful and comfortable. The private dock on the shallow lagoon is steps from your bungalow. You can settle into a lounge, kayak, or swim, or just hang out with Eileen's very cool cats. Eileen will assist you in arranging excursions if you want to leave the property. Although we did venture out for snorkeling, whale watching, hiking and dining during our 2009 trip, in our December 2012 trip we saw no reason to leave the property. During our recent trip, Eileen coordinated a beautiful wedding for a couple from Arizona. It was Polynesian style with beautiful flowers, music, fire dancers, with the bride and groom dressed in traditional Polynesian clothing. Just beautiful. We will return.
