Looking to break out of our resort to try some local places, we walked a couple of miles down the road to the Mayflower for lunch. It was a warm day, so we appreciated being seated near an open window. There was a nice breeze throughout our visit.
The meal started with some warm fresh bread which was exceptionally good. We ordered Shrimp Provencal and Lasagne with a side salad. The shrimp was some of the best we've ever had...Cooked perfectly with an exquisite sauce. Treat yourself by cutting the shrimp into very small pieces and savoring every bite. Lasagne seems like an odd dish to order on an island with excellent seafood, but I'm glad I did. The meat was ground to a fine consistency, and the sauce was perfect and probably made in-house. The lettuce and other vegetables on the salad were quite fresh.
The service was...relaxed. I wouldn't go there if you are in a hurry, but most folks on Moorea aren't in a particular rush, so just go and relax. It is a nice place for couples to be together, but would be fine for families as well.
As with all meals in French Polynesia, expect to pay about twice what you would in the U.S. Tipping is not expected.
If we return to Moorea we will visit the Mayflower again.
