I visited the restaurant at this hotel with a coach party. The service and food were both excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. The only down side was the very steep staircase to the ladies - although there was provision for disabled users in one the outside chalets. There were also only two cubicles which was hardly adequate for a party.

Our experience at the Royal George was entirely positive. The staff member who greeted us was friendly and professional. Our room was large, clean, and nicely furnished; additionally, it had a balcony with two comfortable wicker chairs overlooking a large garden. The hotel is located a short walk from Tintern Abbey so that we could enjoy it both during the day and when lighted at night. The restaurant was pricey in the evening and so we ate at a nearby pub. Breakfast was fairly priced, however, and included a full Welsh breakfast as well as juices, cereals, and extra coffee. All in all, the hotel provided a fine one-night stay.

This hotel was a treat to visit. We were made very welcome by the staff , the food was excellent, and the hotel was extremely clean and well looked after. My husband and I had a lovely room, with a four poster bed. The group we were with all enjoyed the weekend and we would go back again.

I travelled in from Athens, Greece to meet up with ex-Army comrades and their wives for a lovely w/e (3rd-5th May '13) at this delightful old hotel. Sam and her team looked after us well, and special mention should be made of the Reunion dinner that was put on for us on Saturday night. Good, well cooked and wholesome food. Likewise for the breakfast. Also mention should be made of the barmen who went over and above to keep the bar open long after 'lights out'! The room was clean and comfortable and I would recommend anyone coming to this lovely area to visit this hotel.

Having read mixed reviews about the George I wasnt looking forward to staying there however I was pleasantly surprised. Lets get the negative stuff out of the way first. I stayed in 1 of the Chalet bedrooms which are clean and tidy and all have twin & single beds in them. However they are a bit tired with ageing furniture. I was on the ground floor and could hear lots of noise coming from the rooms above due to the old wooden construction. The bathrooms are basic with decent if underpowered showers and the decor is homely but basic.
The bar area is quaint, tranquil and very quiet. The clientele while we visited where all of a certain vintage but you wouldn't expect a raving boutique hotel bar in Tintern anyhow. The hotel has free parking and WiFi throughout although the connections variable and mobile signals are weak in the area. I didn't eat in the hotel in the evening but the freshly cooked breakfast was very good. Its situated about 200 yards from Tintern abbey and the views and walks from the front of the hotel are wonderful, the river running beside it and the ducks and geese add to the charm. The staff I met where are very helpful and eager to accommodate even offering to put some food on for us late at night due to our odd working hours.

Room Tip: Ask for a chalet room on the first floor to get a better view and less noise

Eight of us dropped in unannounced from Ireland looking for breakfast on a nice soft morning recently. After a very nice welcome we were informed that the Chef would "strain a point" andfacilitate us even though breakfast should have finished.
We got the full Welsh breakfast and were offered more of everything if we wanted it. And of course the price was right to top it all off. Many thanks folks!

This hotel has a slightly dated style with its plush lounge and cosy decor, but it actually makes a very pleasant change from the modern trend towards minimalism with its noisy echoing bare walls and wooden floors. The atmosphere here is one of peaceful tranquility which more than makes up for a few shortcomings.

The room was clean, tidy, comfortable and quiet, dinner in the restaurant was good if not excellent and the staff were at all times helpful and friendly. I will look forward to staying here again.
