Spent the day in Tintern last week and deliberated on where to have lunch. Quite a lot of choice and we think we made the wrong one. The food is trying hard to be something its not: why the "chef" puts slices of orange, sultana, yellow rice, grapes and beetroot cubes in a salad is questionnable - maybe he/she thinks it makes it colourful; to brighten up the main event which in our case was pretty tasteless. We decided that the proprietors are trying to appeal to all tastes but they can't put that on one plate. I tried one of the Specials, cauliflower and broccoli cheese. The cauliflower was rubbery, no taste of cheese and the broccoli was watery and tasteless. Disappointed to find out that there's a 50p surcharge on credit/debit cards - poor show. Our highlight? The water mill which can be seen in operation at intervals and the gorgeous nick-nacks in the shop.

We visited the Abbey Mill complex today and purchased items from the shop above the art and craft galleries. We didn't want refreshments but I went into the coffee shop/ restaurant to ask politely if I might use the loo. A waitress/ blonde girl at the till asked if we were using the facilities so I explained that we had done so on previous occasions. It was obvious that they wouldn't allow someone who wasn't buying something to use the toilets so I told the girl that we wouldn't be using their facilities in the future. And neither would my husband, or his friends, who regularly rides in the area on his motorbike! I understand that the owner owns the coffee shop/ restaurant as well as one of the other shops and rents the other shops/ outlets out. What a shame that the other shops/ outlets will also lose out because of the owner's attitudes. I would add that I am a perfectly respectable female civil servant in her forties but feel that the owner's poor attitude is extremely short-sighted in terms of promoting their own business as well as other businesses on the site.

Terrible music, undercooked crepes but the tea cake is a big portion.

Stopped on the way back from Cardiff to Oxford and given it was three days beforeChristmas I thought I would stop off to have lunch and some stocking gift
shopping. The Abbey Mill was busier than I thought but still there were places to park and it did look like the restuarant was the draw, not the shops as there were very few people in the shops but there were about 10 in the restuarant. Service was swift I had a seasonal baguette ( turkey and cranberry) with a mince pie. Fresh plentiful and swiftly delivered to the table The mulled wine being drunk at the next table gave the area a warming Christmasy feel Overall a far better experience than any motorway service station
