“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed August 5, 2012 for a stay in July 2012

The location of the cottage is a good enough reason to stay here. Directly opposite Tintern Abbey which is even more magical when it’s partly lit up at night. Don’t be put off by the fact it’s on the main Chepstow to Monmouth road (it's not busy most of the day) or that next door is the Abbey Hotel. The cottage is set well back and we didn’t hear either road noise or any revellers from the hotel.

One of the owners, Fiona met us and gave us a good tour and thorough introduction. A nice added touch was the Welsh roses and lovely cup cakes. The latter went down a treat with the tea and milk provided. A nice bottle of Cote du Rhone was also appreciated as was home made fruit vodka.

There was plenty of space for our party of four adults. We can vouch-safe the beds as being luxuriously large and comfortable and both showers worked a treat. The spa bath was only tried by the boys in the party who couldn’t see the benefit.

We mainly stayed locally to walk and eat and had a great time. We can recommend the Moon & Sixpence which is about a 10 min walk from the cottage. Great food at reasonable prices and like most of the locals, very friendly and welcoming. The Kingston Brewery is a must. V Friendly owners and you get to sample a couple of beers. Their Classic Bitter is excellent. The Tintern Parva vineyard was also welcoming. A nice rose but also good country wines.

Try and get to the lovely award wining Brockweir village store which is run by volunteers and sells breads and cheeses and other smashing things. It’s only a 2 mile walk from the cottage (beware 1km steep hill to get there)

If you want a nice stop-off on the way then we’d recommend Castle Coombe in Wiltshire. Deserves the accolade prettiest village in England. Unfortunately we spent too much time there and arrived at the cottage later than we agreed so didn’t do any grocery shopping. Be warned, the cottage doesn’t come with a welcome pack of locally produced bread, butter, cereals or jams as we had wrongly assumed would be provided and there is no convenience store in the village. You’ll need to either go back to Chepstow (6 miles) or go to the next village (Browns store in Llandogo), about 4 miles away. To be fair, the instructions sent to you give plenty of options to get shopping on the way and to arrange deliveries whilst you’re here.

Final point, if you wish to cook in the kitchen, be warned that the heat detector in the kitchen is sensitive (just roasting a joint seemed to set it off and all the fire alarms in the rest of the house). Opening windows and wafting tea towels seemed to keep it calm and provided good exercise.

We really appreciate the time taken to respond to this and are delighted that this party thoroughly enjoyed their stay. We were already aware of the two issues mentioned below and had talked to the guests about them before this review appeared on line - however we felt we would like to post a response here for the information of anyone else who might be reading this.
On the issue of the welcome hampers....We are sorry to note that this party expected a hamper but a little nonplussed by that expectation as we have never said we provided one at this cottage! Years ago we used to include a welcome hamper for guests at our longer etablished cottages however we found that everyone had more detailed special requests than we could handle. For example if we included home made bread we got remarks such as " we would have preferred white/brown/wholemeal/.granary.rolls/less crusty/more crusty etc etc." Multiply this over the dozen or more items included and it become impossible to please all of the people all of the time.. To make it even more complicated guests were saying that they enjoyed selecting their own produce from the many local specialist shops( nearest 2 miles) or the supermarket ( nearest under 5 miles) and so could they have a reduction for having no hamper! Eventually the answer was yes and we no longer cost them in.
We will still arrange a hamper at a fraction above cost on request however this option is very rarely taken up beceause we do, as our guest's review explains, give all the necessary imformation for organising deliveries by a range of stores (Asda,Tesco,Sainsburys, Waitrose and Co Op ) direct to the cottage -or stopping on the way to us to get provisions. A major supermarket has many thousands of options so we let them do what they do better than we can with the groceries - and we concentrate on providing quality cottages rather than groceries -except on special request..

We apologise that the smoke alarm in the kitchen went off but truthfully we are not all that sorry as the whole house has smoke and fire alarms and emergency lighting wired to the very highest standards ( and inspected by the Fire Brigade). Better safe than sorry!
The reason it did this for this party , and we do appreciate it was irritating, is that the very effective cooker hood which extracts to the outside was out of order for the first 36 hours of their stay. It usually extracts so well that no cooking affects the alarms and once it was fixed by our electrician promptly on the Monday the problem was at an end. No one else has ever had an issue and we hope that it remains a one off. We are very sorry for the temporary nuisance.

“Beautiful cottage in stunning setting”
Reviewed June 29, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

Lovley Cottage, in a fantastic setting overlooking the Abbey at Tintern, the cottage has every thing you need for a fantastic stay, it’s beautifully done out with great taste, lovely beds, the bottle of wine was a really nice touch.
Its 4 star accommodation on every level, my only niggle is don’t expect to have to strip all the beds in a 4 star place!.

Thanks for taking the time to write us a very good review. We are glad that the three of you had a really comfortable time and enjoyed having a superking bedroom each. We agree the giant beds are lovely!
Its right that we do ask everyone to put all the used linen and towels in a heap and leave any unused items aside. It isnt because we dont want to do it ourselves but because of our green ethos. It we are not able to tell what has been used or not ( and sometimes it is very hard to tell ) then we wash and iron everything in the whole house just in case. However this is a bit wasteful and that is why it is so helpful if you sort it out for us.
Hope this explains and that we may welcome you back before too long..

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay so much. We are glad that members of your party enjoyed the flowers ,wine and fruit vodka we left as a welcome gift with our compliments. We hope that those who we now know dont do alcohol appreciated the tea coffee and milk instead ( and the dogs liked their biscuits) . If you remind us before you come again we will be happy to provide something different next time, we have many repeat people and we do try hard to please when we have come to know everyones preferences.
We absolutely agree that we dont have space for 6 adults plus 2 two dogs ( so 8 bodies) in the sitting room. This is exactly why we restrict the total number of bodies in a party ( whether human or canine) when we take a booking and we ask about the size of pets in order to ensure that everyone can be accommodated in comfort. We sleep 6 in giant beds, can seat 6 adults easily, plus highchairs, round the dining tables both indoor and out . Our sitting room is not huge but we are careful to make everyone comfortable. We can seat 6 round the fire. One sofa is a large 3 seater and one is a large two seater plus there is an armchair available if a party of 6 is booked with us . When a smaller party is expected ( in your case you booked for only 4) we change things round . As you saw we take the armchair out of the sitting room and change the position of coffee and side tables This still allows a sofa seat for each human but provides more floor space for pets and its hopefully why you were very comfortable. Hope this explains.
We look forward to welcoming you back sometime in the not too distant future!
