We recently enjoyed a wonderful stay at Makaranga Lodge . A beautiful and restful oasis and rare find - totally unexpected . The accomodation in the new section , where we stayed was lovely . The restaurant , Nona , was suprisingly good . Highly recommended for that part of the Natal midlands . Unfortunately , the service in part was disappointing . For the price that one is paying in this boutique hotel one expects better and more welcoming service . Their was no contact with us from management for the entire stay , from booking in when we told that nobody was available to show us our rooms to check out when we were not asked how our stay was .

Room Tip: Stay in the new section

The past weekend our family stayed at Makaranga Lodge and enjoyed every minute! Waking up to birdsong is quite a treat, as is going for walks in the expansive gardens. The restaurant offers a good variety on the menu, but the breakfast portions are way too large!! I felt quite foolish sending most of the serving back, not being able to finish it. Also, before booking directly with the Lodge, check websites for specials - definitely worth your while going through this little extra effort as big savings are possible! To the owners: a coat of paint, repairing damp and clean carpets will add a lot of value, making this an even more special destination!

Room Tip: Ask for the new wing - more modern and larger rooms. Excellent bathrooms!!

I stayed here for three nights on my own, really large and pleasant room, great breakfast, nothing too much trouble and security was first class. Would highly recommend it! I checked out a little later and it was no problem, no charge and a well run hotel in all.

Though its location is far from the beach it was peaceful, beautiful and memorable - perfect for a quiet private honeymoon. The gardens are well kept and vast, with beautiful sculptures . The pool is invitingly blue and cool and the food was absolutely fabulous. The bathroom was prestinely clean and modern. We were there during christmas season so everyday we had a small present waiting for us in our rooms be it candy canes or decadent chocolate. The promised shuttle service was unavailable which made travelling into town a challenge as we had not been informed prior to our arrival. The staff however were not the most helpful but one can overlook that and be happy with the serene surroundings, lovely rooms and excellent food.

As always I write my reviews with the wheelchair user in mind. This resort has thousands of trees which were planted by one of the original owners. Those are now large, mature trees. Woven around the site are roads which make it easy for the wheelchair user to get around but a strong helper to get you up some of the hills.
The restaurant has a good menu at reasonable polices.

Room Tip: There are nine wheelchair accessible rooms which can be described as huge.the bathroom was well laid...

This is really a tale of two hotels, the West Wing vs. the East Wing. The West wing is on their website, the East is not.
We were members of a wedding party that spent two nights at the hotel. When we arrived we were not allowed to check in before the remaining 50% of our accommodation was paid in full (I now know why). When we got to our room our key would not work, eventual they let us use housekeeping’s key until they could sort out the problem (that took about 3hrs). When we finally got into our room we found that we had been allocated a handicap room (not handicap friendly – handicap specific). The room though big, had a mix of furnishings from three different themes (green/lime wash, cheery red and brown wood), the bed was a tiny squeaky double bed which was too small for the headboard, the carpets were frayed and the bathroom had terrible mould on the ceiling, very small basin which took a long time to drain and a tiny bath.
When we tried to move rooms we were meet with the response from reception that all the rooms on that wing were handicapped rooms. It took more than two hours to finally speak to a lady by the name of Candice who I was tool was the hotel manager. Her response was to make me feel like I was prejudice against handicapped people (which I am not, I would just like to make the choice as to whether I stay in a room with hospital type leaver taps or not).
We opted to stay at the hotel as we had now paid in full for two nights and the rest of our family were also staying there. Some family members stayed in the West wing, (they seem to have gotten the website rooms with super king beds and clean nicely painted bath rooms), while others had a similar experience to ours as they too were on the East wing. Some of the rooms received morning papers, some did not; some got a new mix of toiletries every day, some did not. By the time we checked out on Sunday there were still cold drink glasses in our room from Saturday morning and the basin was still blocked (after being reported to Candice on Friday evening).
Our experience at restaurant “Nonna” was very mixed, the food was great but service ranged from good to very poor.
The quality of the rooms and poor service we experienced was definitely not up to the standard of a hotel with 4 stars and charging R1220.00 per night. There website is very misleading.

Room Tip: If you must stay, make sure you get a room on the West Side

I would like to personally apologise for the series of unfortunate incidences that you experienced during your stay with us. We continually try to do our very best for all of our guests, but unfortunately, sometimes we do fail. I will look into each issue that you have noted, in an attempt to correct and improve our hotel policies. Providing our guests with the best possible hospitality and service has always been our mission. We have addressed the East Wing room this year with a major refurbishment, and will address this matter with the manager in question. We want you to know that we truly enjoy sharing our passion for our destination with visitors and want you to walk out the door feeling refreshed. If you come back to our hotel, I would love to have the opportunity to speak with you directly, so please ask for me. We hope to see you again in the future and wish you the very best.

Regards,

We booked the Presidential suite for one night as a special relaxing treat to ourselves. There was nothing presidential about our stay. the room itself was dusty, the bathroom had tiny bathtowels instead of bath sheets and there were no robes or slippers. one of the doors onto the balcony was broken, which my husband managed to fix by himself. There was a tear in one of the bedsheets.

When I went to the Spa my husband tried to have a nap (Saturday afternoon) but workers were busy installing a door right below our room so instead of getting some sleep he got banging and crashing and drilling for a couple of hours. At the Spa I had a terrible manicure, however the manageress Jillian was exceptional and offered me a full refund plus a gift voucher.

After going out for dinner we came back to find our room had not been turned down. It had not been touched. So we turned down the bed ourselves and had no clean teacups for the morning. The following morning (Sunday morning) we were woken at 7AM by the garden crew talking loudly and tossing spades into their truck. Then around 7.45 the workers below started again with their renovations, using a jackhammer on a window frame. At that time on a Sunday?!!

We complained and the manager on duty agreed that this was unacceptable and offered us a voucher for another night's stay. we were told this would be emailed to us. We are still waiting for that email...

To pay that amount of money for the best room and get this experience? Really disappointing.

Room Tip: They don't stock the bar fridges, ask for them to be stocked as you check in if you want them st...
