Relatively expensive food that was neither bad nor good. The service was also average, though as a family business that was understandable.

Ok so four of us came in for lunch. We tried to order from the menu on the bench but that was promptly removed as it wasn't for us. That menu showed a burger and chips for 11 dollars. We then ordered from the board at 18.50 for the same item and were overcharged by 3.50 each because according to the server, the price was different to that listed. After some wrangling the manager pointed out that the server was incorrect. She returned our refund but was unapologetic. Now the food: 18.50 for a steak burger: the meat was very tender but a really tiny piece of meat. The chicken burger was the same price and was actually a processed chicken patty. Even though we were seated outside the food came out without cutlery. I asked for some but you have to find it yourself, grabbing random utensils from one of the trays in the restaurant. The outdoor area was dirty with cigarette butts and cobwebs. Staff attitude especially our server was poor. Overall very disappointing .

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear of your experience with us and do apologise. With regards the menu that was on the counter that was for the Bottom Bus patrons who call in 5 times a week with an average of 15 passengers. They have negotiated a basic menu, priced and sized accordingly to suit the 'budget' travellers who are their clientel. The mix up with pricing was unfortunate but resolved so again I apologise. In terms of quality and pricing I believe that we are reasonable in both price and quality. But that's just my opinion.
Cheers,
Steve

We came into the cafe on a freezing, windy morning and it had an open fire going and felt warm and welcoming. We only had a coffee and hot chocolate as we had only just had breakfast. Both were great. They have lounge chairs around the fire and you can read the papers and books provided or sit at the many tables. We left feeling warmed right through and ready to enjoy the rest of our day.

Hi there, yes the couches are proving popular now that we're into the fairer weather seasons! It's Good Friday today and as I right this I'm watching the horizontal rain and very pleased I have an indoor job!

Catherine and I spent a couple of days in the Catlins and stayed overnight near Owaka. We ate in the evening at the Lumberjack - as it didnt open until 6pm we headed for the Owaka pub for a beer - friendly place with a roaring fire. So the next morning we had breakfast at the Catlins Cafe meaning we had been to each of the restaurant/bar/Cafes in the town. My pick would be the Catlins Cafe. The coffee was excellent - best so far in the South Island this trip - including the top rated cafe in INvercargill. We both had a poached egg breakfast and it was a case of something simple being executed to perfection. The roaring fire also helps to make the place exceptionally comfortable and inviting.
Great coffee - good food - reasonable prices - pleasant ambience - WIFI available. What more do you need to know.

I enjoyed a delicious and very filling egg breakfast. The eggs were scrambled, the toast came with flavorful jelly and the mushrooms, tomato and fried potato were excellent. The cafe has a warm wood stove surrounded by chairs with deep cushions. Lots of reading material on the tables and a wonderful selection of pastries in the cabinet. If the weather is warm and sunny sit at one of the outside tables on the front veranda.
