Harry's Home Hotel Graz
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Hart bei Graz
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 3, 2009

We are a family with 3 children, which is always a little tricky as most hotels cater for 4 people, not 5.

We were looking for a one-night stop over while traveling on to Italy. I found Harry's on TripAdvisor and used their online booking system that was very clear, efficient and easy to use.

The hotel is a little outside of Graz and a fair way off the highway. We did need our GPS system to find it and if you're travelling without one, I would recommend that you plan this part well to avoid frustrations.

Upon arrival, the man at the desk spoke very good English and was very friendly. Our room (an apartment with spare bedroom and kitchenette) was all made up for the five of us. It was really clean and comfortable. If you are to stay a bit longer, this apartment is very well layed-out with all kitchen appliances and large "walk-in" closets. We used the internet connection that was very fast... and I loved the whole style of the hotel that is really modern and very "Swiss" in design.

That evening, we ate at the restaurant that is in the same building and were greeted by a friendly waiter and had very good food. The next morning, we had the buffet breakfast that had a wide variety of foods and of very good quality.

On our way back, 10 days later, we stopped in Graz again and wanted to stay there, but unfortunately they were fully booked. Nonetheless, the lady at the reception called around to three other hotels to find us a room... and with a very nice smile. That is what I call service :)

If ever we go back to Graz, we will definitely stay there.

We were on a family holiday in Austria and booked Harry's Hotel Home throught the internet. The pictures looked to show a modern hotel, but we thought the value was good.

Upon check in, we were pleasantly surprised with the property. The hotel staff was excellent. They were very knowledgeable and they spoke very good english.

The rooms were great, I would recomend the superior double, as it gives you two twin beds (or one queen if pushed together) and a pullout sofa that is close to a full size. The room also has a fridge, stove top and sink, that would let you prepare some foods if you have an extended stay. Two grocery stores are withing walking distance.

There is a restaurant/bar in the hotel, which is excellent. They are open for lunch and dinner. The hotel does make a breakfast available, but for an additional cost. $3.50 euro for continental and $8.50 euro for buffet.

You do need a car, or to take a cab if you want to visit Graz or elsewhere. There is a shopping mall about 5km away where you and park and take the train into town.

All in All -- Harry and his staff are great!

I visit Graz frequently and have stayed in many of the hotels in the center. I have read many positive reviews about Harry's since it opened last year, and decided to give it a try.

Firstly, this hotel is only recommended to those traveling by car, as it is well outside the city, making arrival by taxi cost prohibitive, and by bus unnecessarily complicated. Even if you travel by car, it is very difficult to find. I would not have made it without my satellite navigation system.

I was alone, so I only wanted a business single room, but the first night they were all booked, so I took a double room. The double is very spacious, the size of a studio apartment, with a kitchenette complete with refrigerator, sink, stove, and microwave, with dishes and cooking utensils provided. The room also has a sitting area, balcony, desk, full bathtub, LCD TV, and very ample closet space and laptop-sized safe.

The business single is smaller, of course, minus the sitting area and full bathtub in comparison to the double, with a smaller (but still fully equipped) kitchenette. The rooms are fairly clean, particularly the bathrooms, but I found many "dust bunnies" accumulated around the sleeping areas.

Much is made of the hotel's "infotainment" system, but this consists of nothing more than internet over TV or adult films, both for a fee. Apart from that, the TV program is basic, with CNN and BBC the only English language options. You can connect your laptop via ethernet, also for a fee. The connection is slower than other hotels in Graz that offer free internet.

Still, € 59 for such a well-appointed room is more than fair, but the costs can add up. As mentioned, if you want internet you have to pay. Breakfast options are croissant and coffee for € 3.50, or a "full breakfast" for € 8.50. The full breakfast consists of a meager coldcut and cheese buffet, with eggs a la carte. Again, there are other hotels that offer substantially better breakfasts either free or in the same price range.

Parking in the hotel lot is also free, but even this proves difficult. The hotel is directly adjacent to a local community center, and directly across from a sports center, and visitors to both places use the hotel parking with impunity (despite the hotel receptionists claims to the contrary). This means if you come back to the hotel at the wrong time of day, you are forced to park either in the bank parking lot next door, or at the supermarket 200 meters away. This happened to me three of the four nights I was at the hotel. Not fun when it's raining.

The community center and sports center can also be sources of noise, even with the windows to the room closed. There was a dance at the community center one night, and a football game at the sports center the next. Despite the hotel's claim to have advanced soundproofing, it was not adequate enough to keep out this noise. The internal soundproofing also was not enough to keep the entire third floor from quite clearly overhearing a very passionate encounter in one of the rooms one evening.

As already mentioned, the hotel is also far from the city center, so add to your costs driving 20 minutes into the city, paying for parking, and 20 minutes back -- and all over again if you go back to the city for dinner.

I really wanted to like this hotel, and it probably serves a purpose particularly for business people visiting the nearby industrial park. However, for the casual/leisure traveler, there are other equally well-equipped hotels in Graz's charming center. If one compares included amenities and considers travel times, the higher price of the hotels in the center is ultimately worth paying.

Very nice hotel. Rooms are spacious, quiet and have a pantry with fridge and oven. Supermarket next to the hotel. Nice restaurant and friendly staff.
It is a little remote for public transport, but if you have a car this is a perfect place to stay if you visit Graz.
