“Not impressed with new management”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

We have been visiting this pub regularly for months, but we arrived today to find they were under new management. We had the car very as we normally do. The price was still the same. There was a choice of three meats instead of two but there was less choice of vegetables. Also the carvery was not ready at midday which normally it had been. We had to wait about fifteen minutes before we could go up and get served. The food was well cooked as it usually is, but when I visited the ladies toilet it was filthy and obviously had not been checked that morning. There is no excuse for that in my opinion. I informed the staff who rushed in to check and presumably clean them. I did not wait to find out. They will need to get their act together if they are to succeed there. Word travels fast.

Thanks for feed back. Pleased that you enjoyed the food although we serve the carvery from 1230 . The toilets in question had been cleaned as usual but between 10 and 12 the local football team had decided to use them, sadly this was a continual problem last season. The problem started again this season along with leaving rubbish in the car park so unfortunately we no longer allow the footballers to use our facilities.

We've been visiting the Red Lion for nearly 5 years when in the area for weekend breaks and summer holidays. Have to say we were bitterly disappoited this week when we pop in midweek for an early supper to find the place had changed hands. The menu has been completely changed and resembled a standard menu for the local Harvester or Wetherspoons. My wife ordered a 'gourmet burger' which turned out to be two out of the pack frozen burgers stuck in a bun. I couldn't even describe mine. Unfortunately whoever has taken over from the South African couple certainly haven't hit the ground running and unless the menu is changed i can see a sharp drop off in customers over the coming months and certainly during the holiday periods.

Thank you for your feed back. since you visited we have had a fantastic year and our contract has just been renewed. We haven't had to change the menu since you visited and for the record our burgers are handmade by our butcher (which we have used for over 3 years) and are certainly not frozen. In fact the burger is one of our most popular sellers. Comparing us to harvester seems strange as our food is home cooked

We went to the Red Lion as we were staying in Winfrith Newburgh so it was convenient, we were a bit worried about some of the reviews but we prefer to take things at face value - so very glad we did. Service was good, very welcoming staff, food was lovely and if you can fit in desert the white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake is a must !

This place has been a family favourite for the past 20 years, with parents living close by, traditionally have always had the sunday roast... when visiting.
We booked on friday, for lunch on sunday, a party of 9 of us, no problem to fit us in we were told, did you know we are under new management?
Knowing this was a concern, was it going to be the same place? What was the food going to be like?
On arrival, a few changes immediately apparent, the place has had a good clean up, a fresh lick of paint and seemed much brighter and more airey.
The new owners, husband and wife team... they have been in just two weeks, and open a week.
The menu has changed, we ordered, a complete variety of different meals from the menu, including childrens meals...
Whilst we had to wait an hour for the food, this was not an issue as we could see they were busy, and we were all chatting, and enjoying ourselves... the service was excellent order at the bar, even drinks brought to the table... and very family friendly
Childrens menu, looked to be the standard affair, chicken nuggets, sausages, burgers, fish bites, chips, bean or peas... however when it turned up it was anything but the usual out of the freezer and into the fryer nuggets & chips... these were fresh pieces of chicken breast coated in batter (when they arrived i had to ask are they the nuggets as they looked more than a childrens meal), the fish bites the same... definitely home made, and were delicious (she didnt see me pinch a bit!) the meal comes with a childrens drink, and also a fruit salad or ice-cream dessert, really good value at £6...
I went of for the liver and mash, which was absolutely delicious, others in the party had battered fish, mushroom stroganoff, vegetable wellington... all of us throroughly enjoyed the food, which was all tasty, fresh, and good value for money... and definitely worth the wait!
Its now a Hall & Woodhouse pub, so the drinks at the bar have changed, again no issue for us...
Outside plenty of parking, and a childrens play area which is clean and safe...
The new owners clearly have some further improvements to make, but thay have hit the ground running, and i am sure will go from strength to strength!
Whilst the pub has always been a family favourite, amongst several other pubs in the near vicinity, this place has lifted its game, and not at the expense of offering value for money, or losing the family friendly appeal, or quality of food... No1 on our local eatery now when visiting, well done Kev & Mandy, wishing you every success in your new venture.

Thank you for the feed back. Having only taken over on 4th Feb just over 2 weeks ago we are delighted to have made such a positive start to the business. We have a lot of work to do and no doubt this may even upset some people but we have many ideas that we want to try out, hopefully they will be well received, if not then we will try something different.

Four of us arrived at about 4.30 pm hungry as we had missed lunch. To our surprise the full menu was available plus not one but two specials boards. We all ordered different meals ranging from breaded veal to whitebait and all were well cooked and served by a jovial host. If you are hungry in wildest Dorset and looking for good food in good surroundings (optional wood burner in alcove) this is for you. Would go again any day !

Room Tip: N/A - we did not stay, only had food.

We were staying for the weekend on Preston Road in Weymouth and decided to go on search for a Sunday lunch. We had passed the red lion when visiting monkey world the day before. We had a Sunday carvery for 2 adults and 2 children with 4 drinks which cost us just over £30 and £2 each for a dessert. The carvery was the best Sunday lunch I had ever had. The beef was melt in the mouth and the vegetables were amazing. Roast potatoes to die for and a lovely selection of other vegetables, leeks in a creamy sauce, mashed swede and root mash broccoli cauliflower new potatoes, roast parsnips and roast carrots greens. It was just gorgeous . Dessert was a dark chocolate mousse, lovely rich chocolate ice cream a frozen banofee and bread and butter pudding with custard . Just wish it was closer to where we lived as we would be there every Sunday !! Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

We stopped here for an evening meal with our two children, 7 and 4. My husband is very fussy with his steak and I have to say , we were not disappointed. They were cooked to perfection and the children's meals were also excellent. It was nice to see children's dinners with potatoes and veg and pasta dinners on the menu instead of just chips. They even encourage the children to eat their dinners with the promise of a free lollipop if they clear their plates. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely be returning.
