“Idyllic Setting”

We stayed here for only 1 night and though we had the last room available (room 8) we were not disapointed. We ate in the small dining room in the evening and the food and service we received exceeded our expectations. This is a hidden gem of a hotel and we would definitely go out of our way to return for a special occasion.

This hotel is on the south of the island but only a few miles away from the touristy areas. Set in a lovely peaceful part of Arran with attractively landscaped gardens and a burn running thro the grounds it is an ideal setting for a relaxing stay or a pleasant lunch visit. The menu is quite extensive and the food is excellent. Their sticky toffee pudding is only second to Rules in Covent Garden, London.Prices in this establishment, whether staying or just dining, are reasonable and definitely give value for your money.Staff are very welcoming and friendly and the proprieter,Peter Bowers, is hands on in the daily running of the hotel so ensuring a high quality of service to visitors. A definite must to put in your diary if going to Arran.

Room Tip: Brush up on your driving skills for twisty narrow roads.

Stayed in a single room whilst working on Arran for four days. Really wish I'd been able to bring my partner. Food was a little on the expensive side for my limited company budget but was excellent. There was the choice of Dining room or Bar for meals. Staff were helpful friendly and efficient. Tastefully decorated throughout, I particularly liked sitting in the residents lounge as it had very comfortable sofas and the best place to access the WiFi. Only down side for me was single room was a little small, sparsely furnished and didn't receive the Internet.

We were in self catering accommodation at nearby Kildonan on Arran and after a trip to the Holy Isle we decided to visit the Lagg Hotel for lunch. We found this to be a delightful place, full of atmosphere and history, with such friendly staff and great food. A baked potato was cooked to perfection, served with prawns, and salad, and some home cut chips on the side were scrumptious. We then returned one evening for a meal, again sitting in the bar area, and thoroughly enjoyed our bar meals. A venison and black pudding casserole, apple and cinammon crumble with ice cream was one meal taken after we had sat in the idyllic room overlooking the garden where we made use of the free wif-fi to catch up with our mainland life. The accommodation prices appeared very reasonable, though you need to be aware that the hotel closes for several months over the winter period, and we hope to return one day and stay.

We stayed at the Lagg for 2 nights and wish could have stayed longer. It was great . The welcome was friendly and homely, the location perfect ( beautiful gardens) and the food delicious. Our only negative was our room was noisy until the staff had finished washing up . We soon learnt to sit by the log fire a little longer and enjoy our wine in comfort! Next time we will ask for a different room, The Lagg hotel is easy to find and ideal for touring the southern part of Arran

Room Tip: ask for a room that is NOT above the kitchen

Above the bar of the Lagg Hotel is a plaque bearing the St. Andrews Cross of Scotland and St. George's of England. Few places in Scotland would proclaim the latter, but in the Lagg Hotel the twin emblems are spot on. Peter, the Londoner landlord, has brought to Arran the welcome and atmosphere of the good English Pub that expatriate Scots south of the border love so much. He combines this with good Scots cuisine using a cook from Devon who might well claim to be English but not Cornish. The result makes for a stay of warmth, welcome and the wish to try everything on the menu. The food is tasty, plentiful, and not over-priced, just what is needed after a day's walking or serious whisky tasting at Lochranza.

The room I had was fine, not luxurious but more than adequate although the hot water in the morning was not really hot enough. Having the power socket for the TV in the ceiling was an interesting touch, so a walking stick may be handy for switching it on.

We could not get wifi upstairs, but the lounge where it could be accessed was comfortable and convenient. Breakfast was good (remember to try the Tatty Scones) and the view of the well kept gardens and the river was a joy.

All staff were professional and friendly, working harmony or so it felt. The Lagg Hotel is a good place to stay to enjoy the seas and skies of the south of this beautiful island. My first visit since 1950 was not a disappointment, and this time I was allowed to have a beer.

Room Tip: Say yes when you are offered one!

My wife and I booked a visit to Arran on spec. The Lagg hotel seemed to meet our criteria and we were not wrong. The hotel is in a most wonderful setting with gardens and a babbling burn. The staff were excellent and Mary made us most welcome. The decor is excellent and atmospheric. The menu selection was varied and the food tasty. The wine selection varied to individual budgets. We had a room overlooking the garden and burn. It was very clean and appointed.

Room Tip: Take a room overlooking the garden. Very romantic with the burn bubbling away in the background.
