We planned our trip to South Africa with some help from the Rough Guide and some scouring of the Internet before we left. There was just a brief description of the Woodall Country House and Spa in the Rough Guide under places to stay around Addo. And there is a nice website as well. But I have to say that we were both quite knocked out by the hotel when we arrived to round off the end of what had been a delightful trip to South Africa.
The key factors that made our stay so enjoyable were the room, which was very nicely furnished, the food: the breakfast and dinners, which were consistently first class and the gardens and pool area. But above all, it was the staff who made us feel this was a very special place to have come to. The waiters and housekeeping staff are all employed from the local villages, but what is nice is the way they are encouraged to make conversation with the guests. You can't help but notice that they are all very well trained. Yet the service was pleasingly a lot more relaxed than you get in a busy American hotel say. Afterall, who wants to be served by busy, stressed staff when you are there to relax?
On our last night we were left to ourselves in the dining area on one of the leather sofas, looking out over the lake while the staff packed up and we were told we could let ourselves out whenever we were ready - just remember to switch off the lights and the music system! Oh, and help yourself to anything you want from the wine cellar! (they have an honesty bar)
We found it to be a perfect place to relax and there was the added excitement of the local Addo Elephant park and although you can drive through there in your own car, we would definitely recommend a trip organised through the hotel with Johnny, who will give you a very knowledgeable safari in a Toyota truck with higher up views than you would get in a car. Plus they can arrange other local safaris and of course there are the recently added health spa amenities.
Highly recommend as a place to unwind and the welcoming hospitality.
