It's difficult to put into words how much we enjoyed staying at this wonderful lodge. From the moment we arrived we fell in love with the place, the people, the location, the food and the safaris were all first class. Thank you to Archie and all for a truly amazing time.

Hitgeheim Country Lodge, Sunland, South Africa

July 8-10, 2010

I just got back from a trip of a life time to South Africa with my brother and cousin. Only 2 places were the hi-light of our trip: Cape Town and Hitgeheim Country Lodge.

Let me start off by saying that the 3 of us are not-so-rich students. I can also be very paranoid sometimes when it comes to the conditions of my accommodations and places that I travel to. Safety and cleanliness are my #1 concern, wherever I go.

We opted to go for a 5* accommodation in the jungle for safety reasons and to experience the wild life properly, since it could be our last chance to ever experience it. This was the only place that we indulged in.

I found this place after extensive google.co.za research and after many correspondences with the owner Archie; I finally booked it 6 months before arrival due to the World Cup madness.

We arrived to Port Elizabeth Airport and to our delight we found out that Archie had personally come to pick us up. Hitgeheim is about 1hr drive from the airport. The moment we stepped into Hitge Haven, we realized that we hit the spot. It was magical. The staff greeted us like they’ve met us before. They were extremely friendly and courteous throughout the whole stay. The view was stunning. The lodge is situated on top of a mountain overlooking the whole area (Sunland), which is filled with citrus farms. The landscape is amazing. The wild animals are fascinating. We felt at home the min. we stepped into the resort. Let’s not forget the most wonderful host we’ve ever met; Mr. Archie Hitge. He’s a wonderful character. He was very interesting, knowledgeable and knows how to come up with the perfect activity itinerary customized to your stay.

Archie suggested an itinirary full of activities for the duration of our stay. It was well planned and I do recommend it for everyone. If you made it this far, you must experience the wildlife.

By the way, if you’re wondering what does Hitgeheim means, I found out that it’s a German word and it has 2 meanings: Hitge-heim “Home of Hitge” (Hitge is Archie’s last name and Heim means home). I can’t remember what the other meaning was but I remember that it also matched the experience we had. I’ll ask Archie and get back to you on that one!

The food was great. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner with them and we enjoyed it. Everything was very clean and no complains.

For a detailed description of our 2 nights and the safaris we enjoyed, please consult my review in Travel Forum (left hand side) under "Hitgeheim Country Lodge and 2 night itinirary".

We can’t thank Archie enough for being an excellent host and a new friend. We were so delighted to have met him and his entire staff. We’ll definitely stay again at Hitgeheim Country Lodge the first chance we get that would take us back to lovely South Africa.

We stayed at this most beautiful lodge during the World Cup 2010 during our travels throughout South Africa to see many of the games. The staff, the rooms, the food, the view, the personal attention we received while staying was amazing. The rooms were so beautiful, the beds so luxurious and comfortable, the bathrooms (outdoor showers, huge tubs and indoor showers!) were out of this world clean and snazzy! The restaurant provided the most beautiful, creative and delicious food. The breakfasts and dinners we had over the four days we stayed were out of a gourmet kitchen, creative and delicious, presented immaculately and graciously. Archie and his staff are top-notch! We would not hesitate to recommend Hitgeheim as a place to go, and hope to go back one day.

Hitgeheim was the best hotel we've ever been on our many trips inside Brasil and globally. Wonderfull place, charming and very comfortable rooms, tasty food, and an fantastic team that loves the guests.

We were very well impressed since the lodge owner,Archie and his little dog, pick us up at the airport and we've made an nice drive until reach the Lodge learning a lot about the place, the culture, the people.

The hotel islocated in an small mountain, you've awesomescenic views from your room,at the restaurant, almost everywhere.

The food was one of the best we've during our two week trip to South Africa, combining local ingridients with creativity ,and making really tasting food .and they're always ready to accomodate special requests. For exemple, when we asked an last minute quick lunch after
we leave the hotel , the chef came to us to ask what would we prefer for this last meal
All the tours suggested and arranged by Archie delivered more than we expected.

But what really makes the major difference is the way we're treated by Archie and his amazing team. The staff really cares about the guests. In just two days,we'vemany examples of superior service, and more than that:we met interesting persons, with different stories .

We look forward to get back as soon as possible and we recommend this place for all our friends

I stayed at the Hitgeheim for 2 nights in June 2010 with my 18 year old daughter. All in all it was a wonderful stay for both of us. The food and wine were fantastic. The service could not be faulted. The accomodation was excellent. The owners were fantastic hosts. Nothing was too much trouble. Perfect location for Addo elephant park. I will definately return.

Just stayed at Hitgeheim for five nights during world cup (Brazil vs Holland) and just loved this place. Had my own personal chalet. Nice touches like an outdoor shower, complimentary tasty sherry and electric blanket in the bed which was turned on when I came home from the game on a cold night. The six course gourmet meals were super and included local game like Kudu and we alwasy looked forward to the breakfasts. The staff are very friendly and ready to help. Also enjoyed the sundowner drinks and snacks in the lodge while we wacthed the other games on TV by the fireplace. Enjoyed the sun with an awesome view of orange orchards and mountains. Hitgeheim is close to Addo park, Cheetah rehab place and about an hour from Port Elizabeth.

My family had come to South Africa to visit old friends and watch as many World Cup soccer matches as possible, so in our minds our trip to Addo Elephant National Park was merely a side bar, until we arrived at Hitgeheim. We were a tired group of road warriors when we arrived late at the Lodge to find bright friendly staff waiting to greet us, beautiful chalets to house us and warm comfortable beds for our weary bones. Everything - I mean every need and every detail was covered by the staff. We needed directions to the stadium in Port Elizabeth, they knew the best route. We were to take a safari and go for an elephant ride, they had all the arrangements covered and everything went like clock work even though mother nature unexpectedly threw some low clouds and moisture into the mix just for fun. Our host, Archie, was so well connected and respected by all the other folks we dealt with in the Addo area it provided us with a wonderful sense of community that put us at ease to really relax and take in all the beauty that surrounded us as we explored the areas around Hitgeheim. Our only regret is that we live so far away from this beautiful lodge and these warm friendly people. If you are ever in the Eastern Cape I would definitely recommend a stay at the Hitgeheim Country Lodge.
