We spend two nights at the Hitgeheim Lodge. A wonderful location in a own park and a very nice lodge. Thank you for beautiful days with great dinner and a perfect service. It was one of our higlights of our SA-Trip!

Hitgeheim Country Lodge's overall experience just isn't that great.

Altough the location of the lodge is nice with a beautiful view over the surroundings, it comes with some drawbacks. 1st: You have to drive ca. 5km on an unpaved and very rough dirt road to get there, this takes you 15-20 min, because you can go only very slow. 2nd: The Addo elephant parks's entrance (main reason for most people to be here i guess) is therefore a 45min drive away, way too far to be comfortable to go there more often.

Because of its secluded location, you basically have to dine there, what we were looking forward to, we thought its nice, to eat "in-house". The food is only very average, they want to arrange it nicely but food quality is low and not up to South African standards, especially not if you consider this wants to be a 5 star house.

The rooms are dated and not very clean, beds are saggy. However rooms are big and private and have a nice veranda with a good view.

The friendliness of staff was just average, we stayed at a lot of guesthouses and hotels during our SA trip, and here it was just way beyond all the others. The owners didn't show up at all, just upon settling the bill a lady appeared and basically swiped the credit card. Not any small talk or else.

Like many of you, who have found this lodge, we were looking for a great and comfortable place to stay around Addo Park. Basically there are very rare options (Woodall would be another). The other places standards seemed to be much lower, so we decided to go for it. Considering the considerable higher price of Hitgeheim, the stay was not good at all. On our 14-day trip with very good guesthouses and hotels, this was the worst. Around 200 EUR/night is simply to much for this standard.

I recommend to stay much nearer to Addo or stay in the park if you want to visit.

Thanks goes to our guide Peter, who took us to the park on a day trip (he lives at the Hitgeheim premises). He was great and told us a lot about the animals and flora. This was the best thing at Hitgeheim.

Hitgeheim is a lovely lodge near Addo. The room we stayed in was very comfortable with its own balcony overlooking the valley below. The staff especially Kay and Michael were very attentive and helpful. The food was outstanding.
We had a guided tour of Addo but if I was to go again I would self drive as this would give you more time to enjoy seeing the wildlife.

We loved starting our holiday off at Hitgeheim. It's a beautiful hotel with magnificent views across the valley. We stayed in one of the standard rooms but it was gorgeous with a massive bed, armchairs, separate bathroom and roll top bath, outdoor shower... The breakfast was delcious as were the dinners. Archie and his team were brilliant at looking after us and ensured we had everything we needed, as well as organising a brilliant trip to Addo which was definitely a highlight!

Room Tip: We stayed in a standard room and thought it was beautiful - certainly didn't seem very standard!
