We are a family of 5, two parents with a 24, 22 and 13 year old. Hitgeheim was a little piece of heaven for 3 nights over Christmas 2011. On booking we were promised a Christmas to remember and we were not disappointed. The ambience, style and quality of this accommodation was stunning and left us feeling jealous of the life style, ease of living and the quietness was quite remarkable. Hitgeheim is situated in the remote eastern cape of South Africa, on the outskirts of Addo National Park. Archie, the owner of this lodge and his great staff have a unique way of knowing how to accommodate all tastes. Safari to Addo was just as described and a great time had by all of us. We didn’t expect the wet and cold though!! We had a fairly full itinerary which was arranged for us, with time included for relaxation at the pool. You won’t regret heading towards Hitgeheim, it is a special place. Our kids rated it 10/10... that's good going in our house.

Room Tip: Rooms no 3 and 4 were beautiful!

My husband and I stayed at Hitgeheim Country Lodge for 2 nights in mid-September 2011 on our honeymoon. It was amazing - very private and luxurious. (Need to shower? You have the option of using either the indoor private shower, or the outdoor one... or the bathtub!) I could have spent an entire week just living in the cottage. The highlights would be the beautiful cottages, the food, and the amazing views. Another favourite part were the excursions that Archie's team set up for us - we went to the Schotia tour as well as the Addo Park tour. There are also zebras and some other animals right on-site. If we ever go back to South Africa, we will definitely revisit the Hitgeheim Country Lodge.

We stayed with our 2-year old son at Hitgeheim and can recommend this lodge to anyone (including kids). The rooms are luxiorious and spacious with great views over the valley. Service is superb and friendly. The family run business is flexible in arranging trips and transport to and from airport, Scotia or Addo elephant park. The ever friendly owner Archie took us himself through Addo which was great with our son as well. With his background of a farmer he had hundred's of stories to tell. The facilities are well positioned with a great gathering place where you can share stories with other visitors or just enjoy the view and have a cold drink. The restaurant again has a great view but also a great chef that uses local herbs and meats cooking the dinner. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed it a lot!

We expected more. This was the most expensive place we've stayed in South Africa. And it didn't match our expectations. Yes, the cottage is spacious and the bathroom is huge. But still, it didn't feel luxurious. The price/quality (aprox. 250 euros per night) was not in balance.
The view is not that stunning. It is nice, but not spectacular. The views are over agricultural land. Next time I would also pick an accommodation which is closer to Addo.

The staff is very friendly, but a bit stiff. I was surprised that the dinners where not included in the price. And we had a negative surprise with the price of the wine. You don't get a wine list, but you can choose pick one from cellar. No price tags. The surprise was when we left. We had to pay 420 Rand for a bottle of red wine. Very expensive for a South African wine.

I should have responded earlier on this review but our aproach has always been to try our best. Our tutors in the industry warned us that you will never please everyone. Unfortunately these two gentleman could not find anything to their satisfaction from the minute they arrived.. We sincerely apologies if Hitgeheim did not fit your liking and promise that we tried our best.
We are very happy to be the most expensive stop you had, rather than being the cheapest. ;=))
I also do not enjoy surprises when it comes to paying for anything. Therefore I qoute in writing and expect the guest to read and ask if not sure. Our rate is like most of the bb and guesthouses a bed and breakfast rate. Some of our Safaris are outsourced and include dinner and that is the reason why we do not qoute a full board rate.
Their selecton of wine was out of their own choice from my private collection of extremely rare wines. Should they have had the specific wine anywhere, the tag would have been in the three figure range. All my wine availible to the guests are marked on the barcode at the back with a written price on a white sticker. I do this myself. The price range for the flagship wines in the restaurant and the story telling wines in the cellar start from R60 - R320. Yes it is true that my private collections have pricetags of up to R850 per bottle but surely you do not pick this if you are not a true wine fanatic.
One of the reasons why I waited was to get a review or two from the same room. This has happenned and it speak for itself.
Once again my sincere apology and we shall keep trying our best. We are extremely happy with our product and service levels and congratulate our team. It is a pleasure working with such great staff .

Hitgeheim looked amazing from its website - 8 thatched cottages set in arces of grounds overlooking Sunday River Valley, citrus farmland and a short journey from Addo Elephant Park and since our recent visit I am happy to say it lived up to our expectations.

The owner Archie helped us book activities during our stay but did not pressurise us or give us any 'hard sell' for any tours.

We stayed in room 2 - we would definitely recommend it. Forget any thoughts of a small thatched cottage - it was huge, the bedroom had double doors into a bathroom with a free standing bath in the middle and a choice of indoor & outdoor showers, his & hers sinks. We had 2 terraces - one from the bathroom and the other off the bedroom so we could take the benefit of both morning & evening sun.

The hotel is over 2 km off the road and the lodge is reached via a gravel/stone road through the reserve - we initally didn't see any wildlife but as we were heading out to go to Addo we saw various antelope & zebras and on the last morning had a close encounter with an ostrich. (The zebra seemed to stay around the airstrip area in the reserve)

We stayed at Hitheheim for dinner one evening - there are other options but all a 15-20 min car journey away. You can visit the wine cellar to select a wine for the meal - a nice touch for winelovers.

On the day we visited a game reserve for an afternoon & evening safari upon our return we found a tray with hot chocolate, marshmallows & home made biscuits left for us in our room.

Archies help extended to routes to Oudtshoorn and places to stop / visit along the route

A special place from which to explore Addo region
